Como ser rico de verdade? | #SAL #379

This video was originally recorded in English, but it also has an extra audio track and subtitles in Portuguese that you can choose. This isn’t a get-rich-quick video, and there’s no magic formula, no miracle investment, and you can be absolutely sure there’s no game plan here promising you anything. But this video can indeed make you richer. Maybe not in the way you’d imagine before watching it. While I was at the Aratu Yacht Club, near Salvador, renovating my sailboat, Balanço, I met a family from Canada, specifically from the French-speaking part of Quebec. Unfortunately, I don’t speak any French, which I really wish I did. And English was the only language that Maria, Michel, and I spoke. So that’s how the conversation went. But you can choose the original audio track or the Portuguese one, as I mentioned at the beginning of the video. And subtitles in both languages as well. You have a huge connection with France probably. Yes, I think yes. Not a huge, maybe not a huge, but we have a good connection. Probably like us Brazilian with Portuguese. Probably. Yes. And in Quebec we have more connection with France than the other side of Canada. On the other side of Canada you have… Because of the language, the metality probably, also… The culture, the people… Yes, they are more… But… Both sides of Canada, they are really well with each other, isn’t it? Yeah. Well, the Quebecois, they are not Canadian. They are Quebecois. But for example, for the Olympic Games, when Canada wins, they say, “Well, Canada, why? They are not from Quebec. Why are you happy?” Is there a lot of sailing there? A little, yes. In the lake. More in the lake. More in the lake. And a little in the St. Lawrence River. But it’s very difficult to sailing in the Saint Lawrence because we have big tides. Sometimes we have 15 meters of the tide and normally 6 meters. And it’s a cold area, Saint Lawrence River. But the lakes are good also for… They’re like here. When you say the lakes, it’s the Great Lakes. Is it? Not in Quebec. No, the Great Lakes are in Canada. And Quebec is a part of the St. Lawrence River that’s going big at some place. Because the Great Lakes are more in the middle of North America, like Chicago. Yeah, exactly. But Champlain is part of this lake. One of the best places to make a sailing is the Lake Champlain… who is sharing between the U.S. and Quebec. two an a half hour from Montreal by car. So it’s… So a lot of Quebecers go there for sailing also. How did you have the idea of coming to Brazil for sailing? Because it’s amazing, I think more people should do that. I think it’s a nice thing, but not many sailors come to Brazil actually. It was not the plan at the beginning. Normally we have to go to a place like Cabo Verde… and goes to… Bahamas or… Saint Martin, Caribbean. But we finally stay a long time in Cabo Verde and after West Africa and after we think about Brazil. Okay, but where were you planning to go at first? At Caribbean. From the normal, the normal Cabo Verde, Caribbean. Of course, because when you are going to the Caribbean from Canada, you can’t go down the coast because the current is too strong. Yes, but no, it’s a very bad condition if you go by the ocean way. But in the US, they have the Intercoastal Way that’s inside the land and it’s safe to go up to Florida. You need to go in the ocean only in New York, I think so? Yes, for one hour from New York to New Jersey, one hour in the ocean and after it’s always inside the land. One hour is super close. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s really, really close. And I know probably the current is not that strong in the air because it goes to Europe at some point, the current, isn’t it? The name is the Gulf Stream. It’s hard and then go to the north. It goes to Greenland, isn’t it? Yes, to Greenland. I don’t know, in the coast of Canada, the Gulf Current is still strong north? It’s far away from Canada, the Gulf Stream. It’s near Florida and after going far and far to the east. So in Canada, we have another big current from Labrador. It’s a very cold current. That’s why St. Lawrence River is normally in summertime at 4, 5, 6 degrees Celsius. Celsius it’s a… Canada is Celsius, isn’t it? Yes! Celsius, yes. So we are in the same. Meters, Celsius, no we are not meters. We are mixed. We use the two because of the proximity of US and Canada. We use the two systems but the official system is the metric system. What do you think of Brazil? It was a surprise, it was what you thought about? It’s a real surprise for example for me because we spent nine months in Cabo Verde and then, more than four months in west of Africa. So you know in Africa the city the small cities they have ten houses and it’s enough so after that… Oh, really small cities. Yes yes yes that’s because we saw it in the coast so it’s a really and you need to ask the permission, the chief of the village, to go inside to the village. So when we arrived to Salvador, I remember it’s near five o’clock in the morning. We started to see the city and say… It’s so big! No, no, no. It’s so big. Gave you like a phobia. Yes! Honestly, for me to go to the supermarket, it’s really, really stressful in this moment. Yeah, yeah, yeah. After a few weeks, I’m… Too bad options. Why I need nine kinds of spaghetti? In Africa, one spaghetti. That’s it. That’s all. So this is, for the first, it’s difficult for us like this. But the weather is a major plan also for us. It’s a big challenge at the beginning because we stand one a year in West Africa with Cabo Verde. And in one year maybe it will have one day of rainning or two maybe. With a lot of dust every day. Because of Sarah. Yes! Yes everything is orange in the boat. Everything inside and outside. And when we arrive here we always several times by his day to close and open the window. Multiple times of day, you know. Sun, rain, rain. It’s extremely hot and then rains… We never see much rain like this a few months ago. Yes, so Nami, she’s really scared because she don’t know what’s the rain. So in the present she’s really, really scary about the rain. She’s an African cat? Yes, she’s from Cabo Verde. Cabo Verde in Mandela town. They talk Portuguese in there, isn’t it? Yes. Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau. They speak Portuguese. Senegal, they speak French, Gambia English. You are Mexican, isn’t it? Yes, I’m from Mexico. And of course, we South Americans that talk Portuguese or Spanish share a lot of culture. But probably Brazil, because it’s from a Portuguese origin, it’s kind of different, isn’t it? From what you know. Yes, it’s different, but at the same time… You are not recording me! Why not? But at the same time, we are Latinos. Of course. You know, and we have this connection, Latinos connection. For example, I remember a lot in Canada, when I was arrived to Canada, To see my friend, I need to ask one week before it’s possible to see you in one week in your house. So it’s really… Scheduled! Yes it is. I’m here now. I’m so happy because it’s like Mexico. You pass in front of the house of your friends and say, hi, hello, I’m here. Sure, come on. So for me, this is so, so nice. Of course we spent nine months in Azores, near half a year of Portugal So we started to know a little bit of their culture You would say that Azorians are somewhat like Brazilian, like Latinos in that sense? In Azores they are small islands too and have a lot of old people. I’ve heard, I don’t know, I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard they are very shy… Yes… Like very quiet, maybe not noisy as us in Brazil. No, no, no, never. For example, do you remember in Azores every morning I go to the bakery or I don’t know to the market. “Hi, hello, good morning!” And the people don’t know. After a few months, she says, “Okay, she’s Maria. Hi, Maria!” I say, “Hi, hello!” Because the people never asked for “Hi, hello!” Did you have the chance to anchor here in a lot of places? Where have you been here in Brazil? Yes, where? Bom Jesus? Yes, Bom Jesus, Itaparica. A week, I think? Yes, Salinas. Salinas. Paraguassu, Maragogi. So nice too. And it’s a little like the Siné Salome for the current reversing every tide. So we have, we know that kind of mooring. Here, we spend a lot of weeks here, we are so happy with this marine. The only harbor you have been here is here in Salvador, the only big. Yes, yes, yes, Yes yes. Yes yes. We start to go down in… At the end of June. Yes, at the end of June we start to go down to Uruguay. I don’t know how many months will take. It’s an amazing place too. I love Uruguay too. In Brazil it’s a pity that you have just a little time for the visa because we have a lot of anchor spots. Even this being one of the best part of Brazil for sailors, of course But there’s another that is very good too that is Ilha Grande. Yes, we want to make a stop there. By going to the south we want to stay there at Ilha Grande and also see Rio de Janeiro and a lot of other places. Abrolhos. Abrolhos is amazing. Ilha Grande is Angra dos Reis? Yeah!
It’s the same? It’s the same municipality. But it’s a huge island. That it could be a city. It’s not very populated. That is amazing. There is no cars. So it’s really nice there. I don’t know if you like to hike… Yes yes! There is a lot of hikes to go to… Waterfalls, secret beaches, there’s a lot of anchorages there, sheltered anchors, a lot of them. You can sleep every night in a different anchorage for a long time. Oh, that’s so nice. Well, you say the problem is the visa. I don’t know why three months for Brazil is nothing. It’s nothing. Yeah, a country big like that, it is’nt. By sailboat is nothing. Maybe a trip by plane or by car. it’s better but… Yeah, because this law is… It was written thinking about coming from an airplane and an hotel. Yes! More than three months is a long travel, isn’t it? Nobody has the time and the money to do that almost. But in a sailboat it’s too short. Really short because the wind is not so good all the time. The waves are so big sometimes. Yeah. Brazil grants three-month visas to tourists, which can be extended for another three months. Which is perfectly fine for those arriving by plane, and you can imagine that a trip with a hotel, plane, and so on, doesn’t usually last much longer than that anyway. But for someone to sail more than 5,000 miles of the Brazilian coast. It’s not enough. Non-stop, on a sailboat that travels at 5 knots… Without time windows, without anything like that, it would take 33 days, but it’s very difficult for someone to do it non-stop like that. And if you do it non-stop, you actually don’t even need a visa. You see, as you go south you have to wait for the right window and sometimes wait like 20 days for the right window to go south Yes! And then the wintertime the windows are smaller so you can do only a little distance every time. There are a few points that you don’t have an anchorage for like a one-day window. You have two days. Yeah, I follow Angie. Yeah, Angela! They are in Vitoria now. Yeah. They leaved here more than two weeks. Maybe at 15th they can leave Victoria. Yes so… The best time to go south is in the summer but as I know your plan is to go to very tip of South America. You better start moving now, isn’t it? Because it’s a long way. From here to Uruguay it’s 1050 miles. I’m not sure if this is half away, maybe.. Yes, half away. And then Uruguay to Ushuaia is the same. There are a lot fewer anchorages in the way from Uruguay to… To Ushuaia? Yeah. Like so far, I don’t know. I think the same. Like I want to go to the Caribbean, maybe around the world. And I don’t think too in detail about things that are hugely in the future. I think the plan for the sailboat is no plan. You don’t have a plan. It’s the best way. Is it better to have everything planned? Or is it better to leave some room for chance to bring surprises? Probably a little of both, don’t you think? It’s irresponsible not to plan anything, but it’s also a huge illusion, right? To think you can plan everything in life, as if it won’t throw things at you that you’d never imagine. And defining whether what you’re experiencing is a good or bad moment? knowing if it could be improved… it’s difficult. But you have a master plan? Like we want to go around the world? Or do you want to just go to the Terra del Fuego and come back? Yes, we have the master plan at the beginning, but we only challenged it a few countries at the time. But we want to make all the ocean. So going in Pacific Ocean and then Ocean and came back again in the Caribbean. But we took four years in the Atlantic. It’s very slow, slow plan actually. Yeah. But we take time to visit, make a… Know people. Friends. It’s not a course, a rally for us. How much time you are in the Sailboat? like we will reach four years in October. And how much did this change you like the way of seeing the world or something inside? We changed a lot a lot because in Canada we have a beautiful life. You know Michel works for the government I have an enterprise for wedding I’m a wedding planner. So everything is fine. We lived in a golden jail. But we are happy with this kind of life. I don’t know. We never have a time to enjoy each thing that we have. So now we don’t have money. We don’t have nothing of money. But we are so happy to be connected with the human, with the ocean, with the animals. For me, to see Tristan to grow up in this kind of life… For us, it’s wow. How we’re discovering new life, new country. New autonomy, the human balance for us. We have developed it. Wow it’s it’s crazy so I’m trying to do all to don’t go back to land. I don’t wanna go back to land. I used to work at advertisement and advertisement is one of the guilty parts in it, I think, but that we sometimes we lost the notion that money is a useful thing to do things that are really important But for most people it seems like money it’s the most important thing of all, and of course I want more money, everybody wants but… But sometimes people forget what they are planning to do with money like like to have a I know a life with meaning or alot of good experiences I don’t know if you feel the same. Yeah yeah it’s the same. I think when we live in the land, for me the best example is in the supermarket. When we live in the land, when we go to the supermarket normally we buy for one week. We buy seven packages of spaghetti a lot of butter milk It’s only for one week. We stock a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot. But finally, we don’t need that for one week. And in the sailboat, it’s like this. Okay, you need the money, of course, to repair the things of the boat, to live, to pay, to be held. But you don’t need to stock a lot of money, a lot of things. You need to stock a lot of experience. You need to stock a lot of people, know the people, meet the people in the world. But for us, this is the plan in this moment. Why is it so hard to see that and land? I think the pressure of the community, I don’t know. Marketing. The marketing. We need to buy every day a new thing. We need it. It’s not true, but we need it. You have one thing, you work a lot for one thing. When you have it, it’s not enough. I need another one, another one. And every year and every month, they change a new version, a new version. So you need it all the time. We saw in the land, we did nothing. Small waves are good waves I have a theory, maybe a broken one, but we all have like characters that we use, you know? That maybe in land there’s this character of winning and you are judged by the job you have or something. And here, it’s not that we don’t have that, but there are other things that are very important, like how far have you traveled, how good sailor you are, or how good you are with the trash management. And that other things take the place of that, I think, that become important, I think, than we use a different wardrobe. you know? Yes, yes, yes, yes, it’s true. And you know, I don’t know, one day we spent in Tenerife, do you remember? The big, big, big boat in the Azores. The sailboat for 71 meters. I don’t know how many crew inside and we are with a small boat. And say, we enjoy the same ocean. We jump in the same water. We have the same view. We say, so, this is so nice. In the land, you can’t do that. And in the land, you are the entrepreneur. You’re the government guy, I’m the director and everyone of these characters must have that car. Yes, yes. And here some people have bigger boats but I don’t feel the same. No, no, no. Sometimes, let’s say the rich people help you. “I have a problem in the toilet.” “Of course, how can I help you?” “Are you sure?” “Sure, helpe me please!” It’s so funny too, and say like… It’s a similar community that helping everybody together. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So this is so nice for us. For me, now I feel rich. Really really rich. Not of money, of course. This experience for me is the best. we we have three more kids in Canada they are all Tristan is the youngest one. they say, when you back, and say, why? For why? For continuing the same thing, right? We don’t want. And say, it’s a joke, because I don’t have this say in English or in Portuguese. No, the old people use, I think, to walk. Oh, yeah. And say, when it’s too hard for us, to go inside to the boat, to walk down the stairs, I think it’s enough for us. Our health is the biggest thing for us. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And Tristan, of course, Tristan, he’s 14 now. So he makes this school in bold from the French school. And in two years, in this moment, we try to pass instructor courses, Michelle and I from IYT. And because in two years, when Tristan wants to stop it, I don’t know where. to make a university. We can now make courses in our boat. So this is the plan for in two years. All the time in the boat. Maybe some years at the same place with our boat. I interviewed a lot of people with kids on board and I imagine that with a small child like it’s easier probably with a teenager I know a lot of successful cases and people that became very successful adults and happy. But I think that it must be harder because at this age they’re starting to have new experiences far away from their father’s from their parents I don’t know It must be a challenge to have a teenager on board or is it easy for you Yes it’s a challenge. It’s a little bit of a challenge. At the beginning we are the teacher for him. After two years it was too much to be a father, teacher, captain, so we delayed this to a course. A French course. That is all well installed for the kind of life we did and we do. And now it’s better for us to let Tristan make their training by himself, And they take his responsibility very very well you know you see him all the time in front of the laptop, he makes the school. And for us the school, yes, is very important, but I think the school of life was really important. Tristan started with us when he was 10, and now, for example, across the Atlantic, Tristan has his shifts during the night and during the day. So for us, Tristan, you need to see the stars, you need to check the clouds, and you need to check the wind and the sails and everything. And Michelle and I come to sleep. We sleep here because we’re not so far in front. But for us, we are really proud. Now he’s 14, but he started to make a shift two years and a half. Two years and a half. So the school of life for us is really nice. And I remember in Cabo Verde, Tristan loved fishing by arpoon. And he established a lot of relationship with the fishermen. Do you remember? The fishermen come to pick Tristan sometimes at 6 o’clock in the morning, and they back with Tristan at 6 o’clock at the night. So he spent all the day with the fishermen in a small, small boat in the middle of the ocean. near to San Nicolao Mindelo. He’s so happy and say, “For me, this is a school.” And he speaks Portuguese all the time with them and say, “For me, this is a school today.” A school for language, a school for geography. Probably regular schools would love to have this experience available for students. Ah, yes, yes. If I can receive a children’s from to spend one year for us, we are so happy. You know, one nice guy to talk about it is the one I gave you the contact, Igor Belli. Because he spent all his life in a sailboat, going to Antarctica and making charter. Since he was born, I think, or like very young. And he made three college courses, like in Sorbonne. He made Mathematics, Computer Science and the other one. The bigger ones! Yeah, yeah. There are a lot of successful cases, you know. Yes, because I think when they are interested to know something, this is the moment. They are in the school, sometimes the kids don’t want to know that. They are sleeping all the time. They lost their time. Too boring for them. Because there’s a lot of dopamine given you by the social networks. given you by the social networks. And the school is really boring compared to that. Comparing this kind of school. Oh, yeah. We are so happy, honestly, with Tristan. And honestly, he’s so easy. Of course, he has a big, like all teenagers, like all the humans. But he’s so nice. And today he’s racing! And regatta! Yes. If you think being rich is just about having a lot of money or financial assets, well, the recipe is already given, and good luck with that, you’ll only be able to be rich that way. Now, if you agree with the dictionary and also think there are many forms of wealth, there’s a giant world of possibilities, of experiences that can make your life very rich. Rich in personal, spiritual, intellectual growth, in everything you think is worthwhile and that can make your life richer. But it’s not easy, and no one ever said it was. It’s a search that is at the same time collective because it’s impossible to be rich alone, no matter what kind of wealth you’re looking for. But on the other hand, it’s also a solitary path. You know why? Because there’s only one person in the whole world who can say for sure what kind of wealth really interests you. Which is yourself. Some will say that it’s okay to dry up your spirit for an obscene amount of money in the bank. Others will give up everything to be loved for a work that marks the lives of many people, for the affection of those close to you. But most likely, the wealth that’s right for you… is a basket with a little of each of these things. Unfortunately, I think most people reach the end of their lives without even having a draft of what that wealth is. As I said, it’s not easy. Do you already have a sketch of yours? Maybe the people want to know we rent one room if somebody wants to come with us. Only a room to rent and share a little part of the world tour that we did. One time we had one guy who wanted to stay with us four weeks. After four weeks he said “can I stay more?” E finalmente ele fica conosco 11 semanas. 1.
