Nantes Walking Tour
In western France, on the banks of the Loire River, lies a city that stands out for both its history and culture: Nantes. Once the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, today it is a vibrant metropolis blending modernity and history. In this video, we’ll explore Nantes’ history, cultural richness, attractions, and delicious cuisine. If you’re ready, we’re embarking on an unforgettable journey along the Loire! Nantes’ history dates back to Roman times. Known as “Condevincum,” this city developed rapidly thanks to its strategic location. It became one of the most important cities of the Duchy of Brittany in the Middle Ages and enjoyed its golden age as the capital in the 15th century. A dark chapter in Nantes’ history is the slave trade of the 18th century. Nantes was a key port for trade across the Atlantic. Today, the city fosters historical awareness with various museums to ensure this past is not forgotten. Nantes played a major role during the French Revolution and later modernized with the Industrial Revolution. Today, its historic streets, castles, and monuments continue to keep the past alive. Nantes is a city at the heart of culture and art. Its most recognizable landmark is undoubtedly Les Machines de l’île. This massive art project, built on the site of the former shipyard, draws inspiration from the imagination of Jules Verne and the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Here, you can ride on the back of a giant mechanical elephant and see fantastic machines in the workshops. Nantes is also the birthplace of the famous French author Jules Verne. The Jules Verne Museum, where you can experience the spirit of adventure in his works, is a unique experience for literature and science fiction lovers. The city’s cultural life isn’t just limited to museums. Classical music festivals like La Folle Journée, street artists, and theater performances keep the city vibrant. Nantes is also one of the European cities considered exemplary for its environmentally friendly and sustainable urban planning. There are countless places to visit in Nantes, but I’ve compiled the most important ones for you. Château des Ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany) , built in the 15th century, stands out with its mighty walls and towers. Today, it houses the Nantes History Museum, which tells the city’s history through interactive exhibits. Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul: This magnificent Gothic cathedral, begun in the 15th century, took over 400 years to complete. The stained glass and detailed stonework in its interior are breathtaking. Passage Pommeraye: A three-story 19th-century shopping arcade, captivating both architecturally and atmospherically. Île de Versailles: This island on the Loire River is famous for its Japanese gardens, a perfect stop for those seeking tranquility. Les Machines de l’île: The aforementioned site of giant mechanical animals represents the modern face of Nantes. Trentemoult: A former fishing village on the Loire. Its colorful houses and bohemian atmosphere attract visitors. Nantes cuisine is shaped by both seafood and the abundance of the Loire Valley. Fresh oysters, mussels, and fish are essential to the table. The Loire Valley’s famous white wines, especially Muscadet, pair perfectly with seafood. For those with a sweet tooth, Gâteau Nantais, a traditional cake made with almonds and rum, is a must-try. Beurre blanc, a butter-based sauce, is also a source of pride in Nantes cuisine and is frequently used in fish dishes. “Here is Nantes, the charming city in western France… With its history, culture, art-filled streets, and unique cuisine, it offers a unique experience for every visitor. If you’re planning a trip to France, Nantes should definitely be on your list. See you on your next city discovery! Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and like the video. Goodbye!”
“Fransa’nın batısında, Loire Nehri kıyısında yer alan Nantes, tarihi dokusu, kültürel zenginliği ve canlı şehir hayatıyla Avrupa’nın en ilgi çekici şehirlerinden biridir. Gelin, Nantes’i birlikte keşfedelim.”
Şehir aynı zamanda ünlü Fransız yazar Jules Verne’in doğum yeri. Onun mirasını yaşatan Jules Verne Müzesi, edebiyat severlerin mutlaka görmesi gereken yerlerden biri.”
