Grand Canyon of Europe, Verdon Gorge | most beautiful town in France Moustiers-Sainte-Marie | Travel
Hello everyone 🙂 Today, we are on a tour to visit Europe’s largest canyon but before we get to Verdon Gorge, we have a few stops to make The entrance fee is about one euro You can’t beat the sound of nature Our guide stopped at this ruins which we think is named Hautes-Greolieres We don’t really know the history of this site, but if you do, please let us know in the comments 🙂 Below, is the view of the modern village of Greolieres but zooming out, the views of the surrounding mountain and valley is stunning! These roads are popular for cyclists We’re climbing higher and higher above sea level These country roads makes us feel like we’ve been transported to the outbacks of Canada or America We saw some horses roaming freely in the distance This welcoming village sits at the gateway to Gorges du Verdon It’s so refreshing out here We wanted to grab a quick drink and snack before we meet back with our tour group The pastry here is delicious!!! Our guide wanted to give our group a surprise visit which wasn’t very far from Castellane village This emerald green lake is the first major reservoir of the Verdon River and a short walk away is the hydroelectric dam We stopped at this view point which offered stunning views of natural beauty and came up close and personal to Verdon river The water is cool, fresh and clean As we drove higher above sea level, we stopped at other view points for photos Apparently this is a popular place for kayaking or white river rafting We can’t leave without a selfie lol There are a few view points of Verdon Gorge which are on the ‘Route des Crêtes; our guide recommended this one We can see why this is called ‘Europe’s Grand Canyon’ There was a little queue for picturing taking at this view point lol We have one more view point to visit We’re not 100% sure of the name of this viewing spot but we think it’s Point de vue – Lac de Ste-Croix There are a few places to pull your vehicle over and walk along the wall to take in the views but be careful of the incoming cars! This village is listed as one of the most beautiful village of France and can you believe it dates back to the 5th century? before we continue exploring, we must have an ice cream and we had to try out the rose ice cream! it’s the most beautifully arranged ice cream we’ve ever had, and it tasted yummy! As we drove away from the Moustiers village, we stopped by at a lavender field our visit here is the end of June so the lavender season is not in full bloom Our last stop is to rest by Verdon river There are options to rent a pedal boat, or a kayak or a boat It ranges between 20 to 40 euros an hour depending on the vessel you choose but we were happy to just chill and reminisce on our trip here in Southern France as we people watch and just like that, our time here in Verdon Gorge was over 🙁 We hope you have enjoyed seeing a different side to Southern France with us and we hope to see you in our last part of the French Riviera travel series
When you close your eyes and think of South of France, what do you see?………………. Now, did epic canyons, waterfalls, emerald lakes and rivers cross your mind at all?
No…. It didn’t for us either!
So, welcome to Europe’s LARGEST canyon.
Our tips:
⭐Hire a car or book a day tour – if you want to explore Verdon Gorge at every angle possible, then you will need a vehicle! We aren’t confident to a hire a car and drive around in a different country, so we booked a day tour from Get Your Guide which also included a visit to the lavender fields and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie which is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France – we’ll leave a link to their website below if you wish to take a look.
