Can an Infinite God have a Grey Beard ? #spirituality #religion #occult
15th century painting baptism of Christ by Lambert stress. But apart from being a fine work of art, what makes this picture so interesting? The issue is that until at least the 11th century, God was depicted as simply a hand from the heavens. In fact, such a hand appears in the Beiru tapestry uh which is nearby in Beirut. However, after that date, they took on the biblical description of God as having a gray beard. But it seems this artist wanted to keep his options open and so chose both. A hand from the spirits and a face we can identify with.
I discovered a fascinating 16th century painting by artist Lambert Sustris in Caen France that conveys the issues we have in portraying an infinite God to the present day. Such issues are also discussed in my book
