Fethiye, Turkey | A Hidden Gem Worth Exploring

[Music] This week on JordanJaunts, we visit
the traditional city of Fethiye. Rain or shine, there’s plenty to see here with its old
town and marina. Come with us and we’ll show you around. [Music] Welcome to Fethiye
in Turkiye. We are on a turtle watch today. We’ve been told Fethiye is amazing for
turtles and around about the marina here is the place to come. As well as that,
we’re also going to show you around the city and some of the notable landmarks.
[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Oh, there’s one. Look. Yeah. Yeah. [Music] [Applause] Look at all the
dive equipment on board. [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] park. Fantastic
city with a population of 200,000 people. So it’s not overpopulated. Feels
a nice vibe. Nice clean city and so many lovely places to visit.
So let’s come with us for a look. [Music] [Music] Thunder [Music] Oh, did you see it? Lightning?
Yeah. Oh, this is really close now! We’re just taking some cover just now. The thunder
and lightning is on, so it’s not the normal blue skies you find in Fethiye, but we’re having
a look about the old town. Such a surprise, isn’t it? It’s not what I expected of
the old town of Fethiye. Beautiful. Really surprising. We’ll show you more. [Music] [Music] That’s nice. [Music] Well, you do say it’s weather for the ducks
and the ducks are certainly enjoying this. So, I think we’ll definitely stay in just now because
this thunder and lightning is relentless today. But what an unexpected place. We just
came around the corner there and into the old market town which is fantastic.
We’re in the old market sheltering from a thunderstorm. And what a great shelter this
turned out to be. This market is beautiful and so interesting. I’m just loving all the spices,
all the vibrant colours, and you just think this would put the fun back into cooking when you
see all these beautiful spices. We earlier visited a fruit market with an abundance
of different types of fruit. The quality, the size of fruit was something that we just
don’t see in the UK. Wow. It’s incredible. We’re along the turquoise coast here in Fethiye..
It’s really remarkable the differences between places as you head along the coast. And
that’s what makes traveling so interesting for us because we get to see so many different
things and experience different cultures. [Music] A really nice experience here as well in Fethiye.
Walking along the marina. There’s so much choice, so many private boats to hire or the big
excursions when you go on with many people. I will say these these will be much easier to get
on here than they are at Oludeniz Beach. I think that’s just you, Nicola. I had no problem swimming
to the boat. You’re absolutely spoiled for choice I think looking at the prices of what
you’re getting offered from an excursion shop or coming direct with the boat, I
think the boats are definitely cheaper. But the only thing I would say is you’re
probably having to get here yourself if you’re going with the boat directly because
the excursions will give you that transfer if you need it. So it’s maybe not, the price
is maybe not a fair comparison. But you can get about anywhere here on a dolmus for
£1 each which is so affordable. [Music] Nicola’s still looking for the turtles. [Music] Any turtles, Nicola? No
turtles, James. Look at the view though. The view is spectacular. It is again a bit hazy
tonight. [Music] Not not that I’m complaining. This seems endless. Most places you
come, there’s certainly a couple of rows of boats, but this is absolutely
endless. Feels I’ve been walking miles now. Even though I’ve had that 2 litres
today, could definitely do with a cold one. Busy, busy working. Busy busy working. Yeah, this is your place. Uh, yeah. Yeah. We’ll come
in here for some food. Excellent. Thank you. Happy man. I got vegetarian noodles and we’ve got a
vegetarian pide. Now, these are cheaper than the omeletes we had in Greece. So, this
feels like much better value to come to Turkiye. Beautiful evening here in Fethiye. Good
bit of vibe. Saturday night, nice and warm. Sunset very soon. Such a fantastic city. I always wonder how so many of these
boats can survive and work. I’ve never seen so many in a place in my life.
[Music] So, I’m hoping that this tune won’t get blocked by YouTube. I’m sure
there’s definitely no copyright here, but I’m sure there was no copyright in
my song, the karaoke the other night, and that was blocked by copyright. So, let’s let’s
see. Anyway, what a brilliant evening. [Music] As we move into this wonderful
square, there’s a statue of Attaturk, the Turkish leader that changed so many
things. So, unless there’s fluorescent turtles going about, I don’t think
we’re going to see them tonight. Is there such a thing, Nicola?
Fluorescent turtles? No, but there are other fluorescent animals. [Music] Now, that’s a beautiful boat. Wow. [Music] [Music] Oh, nice. What you having? Can
I have a caramel one, please? A cone. Cone.Yeah. Okay. One. One please. And what you
caramel and this yeah summer fruits I think This is a very attractive riverwalk in
Fethiye. All the popup cafes and local businesses. Wished I’d known about this before I
had my dinner down the front. This is beautiful. Look at the low tables, it’s very cute. That’s
for wee people. That’s for you Nicola. Nah, you’re not actually wee just joking. Short
legs. I actually feel really huge here. Do you? Yeah. I lifted up a a a skirt and
a top and I thought, “Oh, that’d be nice.” And then I looked and they said it was a medium,
but it was tiny. And I was just thinking, “Oh my goodness, I just feel so big here. I feel
much taller than lots nearly all the women and lots of the men. I feel huge here.” Funny. Me
too. I feel big as well. Feel tall. I like it. A tip for you in Turkiye is bring notes with you
or Euro and exchange them when you get here. If you try to take money at the ATM, even a main bank
building, never mind a standalone ATM will charge you between 6% and 8%. I tried to take £200
out there, and was getting charged £16. Now, in my book, that is a lot of money out your
funds. So, my advice would be leave them alone, use card. Often in Turkiye, they say
you can’t use card because they get charged by the bank. Sorry, I’m not getting
charged 8%. So, This definitely a good tip. Thank goodness for that. We got a dolmus.
I was trying to take money out the ATM there because we didn’t have much cash left
and we would have had to go to an ATM. So, as I said earlier, the ATM is so expensive, 8%
charge here in most banks. Coming on to dolmus, I was expecting it to be more expensive because
we’re coming from Fethiye. to Hisaronu. So, I thought maybe two each.
So I handed the driver 200 200 and so I handed the driver 200 lira expecting
it just to be that was it and and I took a seat he shouted to me he said no your change and it
turns out it’s still only a pound each to get anywhere in this Fethiye area on the bus. But
we were just having some reflection on when we were in Egypt if you’d done that in Egypt
they would have kept it and said nothing. It’s just a completely different culture and
it’s much appreciated I think as a tourist. Nice people.
