Before the world-famous Christmas markets of Dresden come to life, there is a quieter season, an autumn market. It begins September 12, 2025, and lingers until October 3. The heart of it all is the altmarkt, the very square, that soon will glow with Christmas lights. So why not pause a little earlier this year, bask in the autumn sun, feel the city’s warm glow, and discover the jewel box of Germany on a golden autumn day. Furstenzug to Frauenkirche, and then to the Autumn Market This is Hofkirche And this is the Semper Opera The old city is really compact: everything is in walking distance Georgentor, with a view on Furstenzug and Frauenkirche Before you explore Dresden’s autumn charm, we have a few quick tips for travelers. Dresden is well connected, 2 hours by train from Berlin, or 3 hours from Prague, or a very scenic drive through Saxony. Many cafes and smaller bars prefer cash over cards, so it’s wise to carry some euros. Germany uses Type F sockets, 230 volts. Bring an adapter if you travel from the UK, Italy, or US. If you’re exploring by car, pack a few must-haves. We always travel with the essentials, a first aid kit, some water, and something for emergencies on the road. Discover the Jewel Box of Germany in the Autumn. They have an annual “herbstmarkt” – autumn market. It is like the Christmas Market, but then themed in the autumn foliage colours. We had an evening walk along the Fürstenzug, Hofkirche, Semper opera and Frauenkirche. A visit to the Herbstmarkt in the evening and night, and a night time walk through the old town. A marvel of architecture and charm.
