The Palace of Fontainebleau, located in Fontainebleau, Seine-et-Marne, is the largest palace in France. It is also called the Château de Fontainebleau (Château de Fontainebleau). The palace’s current appearance is the result of fortifications by many French kings, with the basic architectural structure being the work of Francis I. The buildings are spread out around a courtyard, and the town of Fontainebleau has developed around the remains of the former royal hunting grounds (Fontainebleau Forest). The palace’s interior and gardens are a French interpretation of Italian Mannerism. The Mannerist style of interior decoration in 16th century France is known as the “Style of Fontainebleau”. It combines sculpture, metalwork, painting, stucco decoration and woodwork, and the outdoor gardens feature stylized parterres. In the Fontainebleau style, allegorical images are used in plaster mouldings. Arabesques and grotesques are also incorporated, and the edges are finished in a curled shape, as if they were made of leather or paper. The expression of feminine beauty in Fontainebleau is “rut.” Small, neat faces and long necks, excessively long torsos and limbs, small, high-set breasts, etc. – a near return to late Gothic representations of beauty. The novelty at Fontainebleau lay in the refined and detailed carvings, which spread among connoisseurs and artists. Through the sculptures of the School of Fontainebleau, this new style spread to other parts of north-central Europe, primarily Antwerp, Germany, and eventually London. How to get there: If you are traveling by train from Paris, get off at the nearest station, Fontainebleau-Avon, and change onto a bus. Fontenay Abbey is a monastery located in the town of Montbard in the Côte d’Or department in Burgundy. This is the oldest Cistercian abbey, quietly nestled in the forest at the confluence of the Saint-Bernard Valley and the Fontenay River, and both its exterior and interior are completely devoid of gaudy ornamentation. Fontenay Abbey was founded in 1118 by Bernard of Clairvaux and consecrated by Pope Eugene III in 1147. Pope Alexander III, in a bull of 1170, confirmed the monastery’s property and also allowed the monks to elect their own abbot. During this time, the monastery developed iron and metallurgy industries using minerals found in the surrounding area. In 1259, King Louis IX of France exempted the province from all taxation rights. In 1269 the abbey became a royal abbey, and John II, Charles VIII and Louis XII continued to donate to it. Despite this royal protection, the region was plundered during the several wars that ravaged Burgundy. However, the forced abolition of abbot elections in the interests of the Crown marked the beginning of the monasteries’ decline. In 1791, during the French Revolution, the monastery and its grounds were sold to Claude Hugo for 78,000 francs, and for the next 100 years it was converted into a paper mill. In 1820, ownership passed to Elie de Montgolfier, and in 1906 it passed to the Lyon banker Edouard Eynard. He continued to restore the monastery to its former appearance until 1911, and also demolished the paper mill. Fontenay Abbey remains the private property of the Eynard family, but the main part is open to tourists. How to get there: The closest town to the World Heritage Site, the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay, is Montbard. Registration year: 1981 Registration category: Cultural heritage 12. Production of boiled salt from the Salins-les-Bains saltworks to the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans This heritage site tells the history of salt production and is registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a French industrial heritage site that contains traces of a once-planned ideal city. Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans
The Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans was first registered separately in 1982, and in 2009, following the expansion of the large saltworks of Salins-les-Bains, it was given its current name. In the past, salt was an essential food for food storage, and the salt tax (gabelle) imposed on it was one of the sources of revenue for the French treasury. Therefore, old saltworks were often surrounded by high walls and designed to prevent theft of salt. The Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans originated from a plan to relocate the old saltworks at Château-Salins, but was designed by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and was a precursor to later industrial architecture. The Great Saltworks of Salins-les-Bains
The Salins-les-Bains saltworks is one of these ancient saltworks, dating back to the Middle Ages. Both saltworks are registered cultural heritage sites that convey the history of salt production and industrial architecture, and both remain in the Franche-Comté region. Both of these are salt production facilities that use the sengō method (obtaining salt by boiling brine in a cauldron). Take the TGV from Gare de Lyon in Paris to Dole station, then change to the TER and get off at Arc-et-Senans station. Registration year: 1982 Registration category: Cultural heritage Next time we will visit five World Heritage Sites in France (Pont du Gard and others).
