Malaga’s Hidden Day Trips Nobody Talks About
Three day trips from Malaga that will completely change how you see Spain. I’m Andrew, an American expat, and these hidden gems are all within 90 minutes of the city. And please hit subscribe for more real Spanish adventures. First stop, Rhonda. This clifftop town sits 2500 ft above sea level on a dramatic gorge that splits the city in two. It’s one of Spain’s most iconic destinations. And after living here as an expat, I finally get why travels are obsessed with this place. So, I’m standing above the bridge now in Rhonda. And if you take a look over my shoulder, it’s really an impressive structure. Just going to walk along here. The fence, a lot of people just cleared out of here. I don’t know if there’s a tour bus that left or what, but you can see it goes down there. It’s very, very a very, very deep gorge. I don’t know if you can hear it or not, but you can uh I I can hear the the water running down there. We’ve had quite a lot of rain lately, so there is water running down there. If you look here down here at the at the gorge, it’s uh it’s an amazing natural structure, too. Uh you got uh just the the uh the walls there are are quite impressive. You can see the nice turquoise water down there. And then uh off in the distance there’s the the kind of a nice green valley over there. The Moors built Rhonda in the 9th century as a natural fortress. Cliffs on three sides made it impossible to attack. The old town is a maze of whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets unchanged for centuries. What gets me is how the entire city just drops off at the cliff’s edge. This uh wonderful viewing area here. I’ll turn around. You can take a look. It’s uh quite impressive. It’s a nice valley there down that Yeah, that area right down there where you see those roads. We’re going to try to get down there with the car and uh get some uh get some nice views of the of Rhonda. So, Rhonda is also the birthplace of modern bull fighting with Spain’s oldest Plaza de Toros. But what I love most is how it blends tourism with real Spanish life. Step off the main street and you’ll find locals playing cards and the smell of home-cooked food from family restaurants. There a lot of nice trails around here. I found this uh viewing point up here to walk up. Wasn’t it’s not too far, maybe a couple hundred yards, but uh yeah, I got nice close-up view to the to the arches there. And uh you can see the waterfall coming down. And uh yeah, it’s quite a view. Look over there. You can see the the cliff formation over there. Want a pro tip? Visit early in the morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds. Next, we’re trading mountain drama for Mediterranean beaches in Neha. Nha is just an hour east of Malaga where mountains drop straight into the Mediterranean. You get dramatic cliffs, hidden coes, and some of the clearest water in southern Spain with that authentic vibe that’s getting harder and harder to find on the Costa del Soul. They got this little house built into the into the the cliff there and uh there’s a man sitting there and we weren’t sure what it was. My wife went and talked to him and uh he said that it’s a place where the fishermen store some of their their gear and things like that. You can see there’s one, looks like there’s one, maybe two fishing boats up there that they use. Not sure what they do. Maybe they clear them out of here during the during the weekend. I’m not I’m not sure, but apparently that’s a that’s a little house for the just to store things. This started as a tiny fishing village chosen for its natural coves and freshwater springs. The name comes from Arabic narha meaning abundant spring. It got famous in the 1960s from a Spanish TV show, but kept its soul. No giant hotel towers, just whitewashed houses and red tiled roofs. Then we have this zodapa. I like to put raw onions on it and I I brought our I brought our pepper along. But uh this is really good. It’s uh it’s a pork and then it’s in lard. So, it’s uh has the kind of like a lard encased uh pork and uh something you you wouldn’t probably see this in the United States, but I I I really like it. I think it’s just amazing. It reminds me of reminds me of pulled pork. It’s um it’s excellent. What sets Nha apart is how authentically Spanish it stayed. Small intimate beaches, no mega resorts blocking views. Just outside the town, the near ha caves. Over five million years old with concerts and giant chambers. But honestly, my favorite thing is how chilled out it feels here. Okay, I’m up here on the balcony of Europe and you can see the the cliffs back there. It’s very very nice views. That’s the beach right right down there that uh we’re situated on. And then I’ll walk around here. It’s kind of a a curved viewing area here. And you can see the rocks and the the cliff down there. Very clear water. It’s a just excellent area to swim and hang out, things like that. And then if you go over here, you can see the mountains in the back. And then right there, that’s the walkway up into the up into the city there. And uh we’re going to go uh let’s walk around there a little bit now. If you’re loving these authentic Spanish experiences, hit that subscribe button for more hidden gems. Next, we’re heading to one of Spain’s most beautiful white villages, Freehilana. Freehelana feels like stepping into a Spanish story book. This village is famous for blinding white houses, winding cobblestone lanes, and mountain views that make you stop in your tracks. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. So, we stopped off for something to eat at Pira Seepa, which is right at the uh side of this mountain here that uh is a large part of Fhilana. And uh see a very nice view uh from this from this vantage point. And uh we got some food here. We got some uh kroettas and then some sweet potato fries with molasses on them. Now, they make this molasses here in the city and uh was reading about it and it’s the the only place that they make molasses in in Europe as I understand. So, uh going to give that a try. It’s a really nice flavor to it. I like that a lot. A lot of times they’ll serve that molasses with some eggplant, fried eggplant, and that’s really good. You see that all over and it’s one of our favorite things. We’ve never seen it with sweet potato fries before, but uh we really like it. Freehiliana’s roots go back to the Moorish times. You can see it in every twist of these streets. Perched over 1300 ft for defense and epic views. What I love is how it stayed true to itself. No big chains, just familyrun shops, local artisans, and a pace of life that’s about enjoying the moment. walking around exploring and we found a couple of really neat looking little houses there. You can see behind me these little blue doors. I don’t know what it is if it’s a hostel or someone’s home. I’m not sure, but it’s a really neat looking just up these uh little stairs here right at the edge of the all of the activities down there with the coffee shops and things like that. But they got some neat pictures there of the girls. So, it’s a lot of uh fun things to see around here. Freehilana is authentic and Lucia, food, history, and unforgettable views. With Rhonda’s drama, Nirha’s coast, and Free Heliana’s charm, you’ve got three totally different adventures within 90 minutes of Malaga. Which one’s calling your name?
