15 Must-Try Items Under €5: Greek Food Tour in Athens, Greece! 🇬🇷

[Music] Today we’re in Athens on a mission to find the city’s best cheap eats. From sizzling sulaki and flaky pies to sweet lucamades and creamy bugata, we’re diving head first into Athens food scene. And the best part, every single item is under €5. And if you’re new around here, we’re Matt and Nat, and we’ve spent the last four years traveling the world as part-time non- remote travelers. After accomplishing our goal of visiting all 50 US states in 2021, we’ve set out on our next big adventure to see as many of the 10,000 places to see before you die. Well, before we die. In our last video, we were in Fairbanks, Alaska, where we went dog sledding under the stars, saw a breathtaking display of the northern lights, and embraced our inner child at the World Ice Art Championship. This week, we’re in Athens, Greece. [Music] Have you ever landed in a new country with that foggy, can’t think straight, almost zombie-like feeling? You slept on the plane, you followed the adjust to local time rule, and yet jet lag still somehow hits you like a truck. That’s because jet lag isn’t just about your sleep schedule. It’s also about inflammation from flying that messes with your recovery and sleep. And that’s where today’s sponsor, Fly Kit, comes in. Flykit is a researchbacked jet lag solution used by professional athletes, special ops, and CEOs. It combines supplements, blue light filtering glasses, and a custom plan from their AI powered app to help you adjust faster and recover better. Over 93% of users report little to no jet lag, and that’s because it targets two root causes of jet lag: inflammation and circadian disruption. The app tells you exactly when to eat, sleep, and use each item, so you’re not just guessing or hoping that melatonin or pure exhaustion does the trick. We’ve been there before. We get asked all the time how we handle jet lag, and the truth is having a structured plan makes a huge difference. We used Fly Kit on our recent trip to Iceland, and we’re genuinely impressed by how simple the process was and how good we felt when we landed. That’s why we think it’s seriously worth checking out. To get your FlyKit starter pack today, go to flykit.com and use promo code mattnat10 to get 10% off and let them know we sent you. When you use our promo code, it helps support our channel. And to make it easy, we’ve included the link and the promo code down in the description below. Jumping right into this food tour. We’re starting the day off how any great day starts with caffeine. We’re here at Taff Coffee and we’re going to be trying one of the most popular coffee drinks in all of Greece, the Fredo Espresso. [Music] And if you’re unfamiliar with what a Fredo espresso is, it’s a double shot of espresso that’s poured over ice, shaken until frothy and cold, and then poured over more ice and served. You can get it in a Fredo espresso variety, or a Fredo cappuccino, which is topped with cold frothy milk. Also, you can order it sweet, which is also known as Gico, medium sweet, which is known as metrio, or unsweetened, which is sketto. I got mine metrio or medium sweet. Let’s give it a try. It’s bold. It packs a punch, but it’s still somehow super refreshing. And the medium sweet is perfect for me. I love how frothy that espresso gets when they shake it. That is so refreshing, which makes sense because Athens and Greece as a whole tends to be pretty warm and hot drinks aren’t the most desirable year round. So they created the Fredo or the cold espresso. Essentially, this drink can often be mixed up or confused with the other popular cold drink here in Greece called the frappe, which is a less quality version. It’s instant coffee and ice poured over milk. If you want a really high quality cold coffee drink, get the Fredo Espresso. [Music] And if you watch our channel regularly, you know Natalie hates coffee, but you also know I’m probably going to make her try it anyway until I find something she loves. I know for a fact this is not the one she’s going to love, but she’s going to try it anyway. Aren’t you, Natalie? I guess so. Do I have to? Yes, you do. I’m in grease. This is going to be sticking with me for the rest of the day. It packs a punch. I’ll give you that. Oh, great. And it has nothing to do with grease or the Fredo. I’m just not a coffee person. So, [Music] it’s so strong. How do you guys drink it? Medium sugar. Okay. I didn’t taste any. So good. I’m excited for my tea because I got my own pot of tea. They didn’t have a chai, but I ordered the English breakfast tea, and I’m pretty excited about it. [Music] So, that was the perfect caffeine fix to get our day started. Now, I will say Taff Coffee is more expensive than many of the coffee shops you find around town, but if you are a coffee lover and you’re looking for a really craft coffee experience with high quality coffee, Taff Coffee is the place to go. Cuz while you can find them for cheaper, I don’t know if you can find them better. Now, on to the next. [Music] We have made our way to street kuri to try the famous sesame bread ring. It’s a very traditional and iconic dish or food item here in Greece. Also, I just want to say the owner at Street Kuri is so incredibly kind. So sweet. I haven’t even had the food yet. Everything looked and smelled great, but he was incredible. So, come check him out. Now, he did say that this is the more traditional one. It’s a soft bread ring covered in sesame seeds. Give it a go first. Oh, we got mopeds on the sidewalk. Natalie’s going to try it first. So, I think we should do like lady in the when we both bite into it. What do you think? And then we’ll have two, I guess. Then we’ll split it. Okay, that works. Here we go. Oh, first impressions, very crunchy, which I love. Second impressions, it kind of reminds me of a bread stick. Just the size of it. Mhm. It’s very crunchy on the outside, very soft on the inside. Kind of like a stretched out bagel. just kind of pulled it. I mean, there’s not a single space on this ring that doesn’t have sesame seed on it. Super strong sesame flavor. I kind of expected it to be really dry, but it’s cooked really well, so it’s not dried out. Not at all. I like this much more than I expected to. Same. Also, I hope you can hear us cuz very chaotic here. Now, they did have multiple different options of the kuri in there. So, come check this out. Give it a try. But if you’ve never had it before, I recommend trying it the traditional way first. [Applause] On to the next. [Music] We went to a place called I’m probably butchering this. It’s spelled M A M in English. That’s not the Greek spelling. So, we’re going to call it Ma’am. Ma’am. Yeah. If that’s incorrect, let us know down in the comments. But, we came here because they serve what’s supposed to be the best Greek pies in the entire city of Athens. Now, these don’t look like our US traditional pies. No, they’re more like a hand pie. And we got two different kinds. The two most popular. One is called the teropita. No, tiropa. Top pita. Yeah, I don’t know. Something like that. I’m working on it. And then the other one is a spanacopita. The tito pita is filled with feta cheese, sometimes a mix of cheeses. And the spanacopita is filled with spinach and herbs and sometimes feta. Can’t tell if this one has feta in there or not, but it’s a flaky pastry dough wrapped around a delicious filling. We also got their orange juice. Everybody suggested that we get it on our Instagram, so we got it. So now we’re going to dive in to the cheese pie or the tiropa first. [Music] A lot of bread on that bite. Did you get any cheese yet? N chewing for a while. It’s a little dry. Definitely drier than I expected, but I did get some of the feta. And it’s kind of got a tanginess like a goat cheese would have, but super flaky. Again, a little drier than I would have liked. It looks like the outside layer is maybe a little overdone, maybe. Yeah, a little bit. Flavors are great. The cheese definitely helps it out. Oh, yeah. It’s really It’s really creamy. It’s really tangy. I like it. I’d eat it again. Closer you get to the center of it, the less dry it is. Plus, you’re getting more of the creamy, tangy cheese. That’s really good. Now, let’s get some orange juice first. That’s probably the best orange juice I’ve ever had. As a girl from Florida, and Florida is known for the orange juice. This right here, even better. I might have to get another one of those. Oh, yeah. That is amazing. That’s heavenly. Now, this one was so much bigger than I thought it was going to be. Yes. And they serve these. You can get like a full one. This is actually cut in half. We got the smaller one, and that’s still much larger than I was expecting. Yeah. Oh my god. You didn’t even get a bite, Harley, and you were saying, “Oh my gosh, that one is my favorite by far.” Oh yeah. So good. That’s delicious. I might crave that when I go back. It’s buttery. It’s flaky. Super savory. And it is packed with spinach and whatever herbs they use. Yeah, this is really great. I honestly was not prepared to like the spinach one more than the feta cheese. Yeah, same. I mean, you can’t beat this. €4 for both pies and the orange juice. This is a great street food stop. That was amazing. Now on to the next [Music] Miss [Music] So, we are here at Stanny and we are getting Greek yogurt, which I think it’s just Greek yogurt. I don’t know the Greek name for it. Greek. I think it’s just yogurt in. Pretty cool. So, it comes with Greek yogurt and then you get a honey and walnuts. That’s the most traditional way. And we also got two different kinds. We got one goat milk and one sheep milk. So, we’re going to try the sheet milk one first. [Music] Oh, wow. The honey is amazing. Super thick, super tangy. The nuts give it a nice crunch. It’s super light and refreshing, which obviously when it’s hot here, makes sense. This might be my new go-to for breakfast. Now, now to try the goat milk yogurt. Again, sheep and goat are the most traditional Greek yogurt you can get. That is absolutely incredible. I’m curious now to try the sheep one. The sheep one is so much tangier, whereas the goat one, to my surprise, is much milder in flavor. doesn’t have that sharpness on the front end of it. But I don’t know which one I like better, to be honest. There’s something kind of addicting about the tang of that sheep yogurt. Um, but man, the smoothness of this goat one is really incredible. I think I’m just going to have to take this tradition of Greek yogurt home with us and make it part of our daily breakfast routine cuz this is great. Although, I don’t know if I can get Greek yogurt this good back home. So, we are definitely a Greek yogurt fans for life now, for sure. And honestly, I expected to like the goat more because it’s a little bit milder. But the sheep, there’s just something to that tang. We’re team sheep now. But if you do like a little bit of a milder flavor, the goat’s probably the way to go. I definitely recommend just getting both and trying them for yourself. Yeah, that’s probably the way you should go about it. But now we’re on to the next. From Greek yogurt to Greek donuts, also known as Luca Mes. We are now at Kinos, who’s been serving some of the best Luca Mades in the city since 1923. So, let’s go try them. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] I love a place that lets me film things like behind the scenes. He was like, “Do you want to come and watch?” And I was like, “Yes.” That was so cool. These are huge. Way bigger than I thought they were going to be. And only 410. Not bad at all. Did you see how much honey he put on it? He just like kept drizzling it. I was like, “Oh, big so good.” All right, let’s dive in. These things are so one big and crispy. Let’s dive in. I believe that is what a lucam is supposed to be. This right here, they are fresh out of the fryer. They are so crispy on the outside and then so doughy and gooey on the inside and then dowsed in honey and cinnamon. That is delicious. They did give us knives to probably cut these up, but what fun is that? Definitely honey dripping, so I got to be careful. Oh my god. Absolutely incredible. I love that they sprinkle cinnamon on top. The honey is amazing. I love the crunch. I’m a crunchy person. It kind of reminds me of like a very crunchy beignet dough, funnel cake dough, that kind of thing. This is heaven. Can’t recommend these enough. Let’s go eat these things. I think we’re going to finish this plate, [Music] y’all. When I say absolute perfection, that’s what I mean. I wouldn’t have changed one thing. And I definitely don’t even recommend you putting ice cream on it because it’s perfect the way it is. I agree with that. I could have ordered another plate of those and eaten myself into oblivion. But this food tour is not quite done yet. So, let’s get to the next spot. [Music] Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my god. Oh my gosh. I’m terrified right now. I was absolutely terrified when all the birds started coming and I was like, “What do I do?” I literally just put my one hand over my head. I thought for sure I was getting pooped on and I’m wearing a white shirt. That was so cool, though. And no poop yet. So, let’s get out of here. Let’s get out of here. [Music] It is so wild just walking by and they literally just have ruins everywhere. Ancient ruins. You’d be walking through a car park or something and all of a sudden you’re on a archaeological site. Just crazy. Wild. Awesome. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] From one iconic Greek dessert to another, or actually two others, we’re excited to try authentic bugata and baklava. Let’s go. Let’s go. [Music] Thank you. Okay, so some bad news. They were already out of Bugatta for the day, which means it’s probably really, really good. Yeah, which means that it probably is one of the best in the city. like I had heard from my research. But yeah, so we’re going to have to come back at some point and actually try it out. So the English name of this place is Family Bakery 1907. We were able to get the baklava. I’m not exactly sure how we’re going to eat it. Oh, we’re going to have to eat that at the hotel or something. We have no silverware, guys. We could just pick it up and eat it with our hands. Yeah, but our hands will be sticky for the rest of the day. Yeah, we didn’t think that through. All right, we’re going to see if we can find a Bugatta place. Yes, we will try it once we find some utensils to eat with. Perfect. This neighborhood, Siri, the cutest. It’s very hipster, very artsy. So many cafes. I’m obsessed. Yeah, this is I would say the modern tourist neighborhood whereas Placa is the more ancient traditional tourist neighborhood. Yeah, I really like this one. [Music] Made it to stop number two to see if we can find some bugs. [Music] So if you’re like we are and had no idea what bugata was until coming to Athens, it’s a warm simolina custard wrapped in a buttery filo topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon. All right, so we’re going to try it together. It’s a little chaotic here, so just bear with us. I am so excited to try this. They were very nice to cut it up for us. So, oh my gosh. Yep. You’re gonna have to be quick. Bonapetit. Bonapetit. I’m going to use my fingers. Don’t tell anyone. I bet when that is fresh, it is amazing. That custard in there. I’m an egg custard person. The filo has lost a little bit of its like flakiness just cuz we are late in the day at this point. As you saw, most people run out of bugata. This is another one of the popular places in town to get it. So, I’m kind of shocked they even had it. They didn’t have many left. Also, can we give them a shout out? They gave us little forks. Appreciate that. Makes our eating experience a lot better. And you still used your hands. I love that custard, though. And she said the traditional way is to get it with the cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top. It adds a nice little sweetness to it. But if you want a little bit less of a sweet pastry dessert, you could get it without it and it would still be incredibly delicious. Now, on to the baklava. So, for those of you who don’t know what baklava is, it is a ton of thin layers of filo dough with crushed walnuts, pistachios, soaked in a lemon honey syrup. It is sticky. It is delicious. I haven’t had this one and I haven’t had it in Greece, so I’m pretty excited about it. This one’s much more common in the US, I feel like. At least at least where we’re from. Oh my gosh, man. That’s incredible. That is I definitely need a bigger fork for this one cuz it is a mess. Yeah, eating bakoba with a tiny fork is not the best move. So maybe bring your own utensils or something. Man, that syrup that those chopped nuts are soaked in is so good. That flaky dough. Oh my gosh, the texture of this whole thing is just amazing. You have the crunch of the nuts, the filo dough, the syrup. I mean, I’ve had baklava many times before and I’ve never loved it. I’ve never had a problem with it, but this Mhm. this is excellent. And this is something I will crave for sure. Family Bakery, you you did the trick on this one. Also, Creme Royale, they came in clutch when Family Bakery didn’t have bugs, and their buga did not disappoint. So, now we’re going to eat on this just a little bit more before we head to our last stop. [Music] You didn’t think we could do a food tour in Greece without yurro and sulaki, did you? So that’s what we’re doing now. We’ve come to one of the best sulaki and yo places supposedly in Athens. And I cannot wait to try it cuz believe it or not, I’m really hungry right now. [Music] Those are fun tops. It just never gets old. [Applause] Cheers. Or yam. Yamas. Yamas. I think Yamas is Let us know down in the comments. We should have Googled it. Oh, that’s good. Methos Greek beer. Some sulaki. We got a chicken and a pork and a chicken yo pita for all of our American friends out there. Many times people just associate the yo with this right here. The euro is actually the meat inside. And it’s not a gro. No, not a gro or a giro or a gyro. It’s a yro. And if you want to get it in a sandwich like this, you ask for a yurro pizza. I’m going to go with the pa first and do the tatsiki. Yeah, cuz we did get some of their housemade satsiki sauce. There you go. It’s really good. Got a little tang, lots of garlic, cucumber. That’s nice. Very delicious. I’m a fan. Very refreshing. I love that the Euro pizza has fries on it. Of course, Matt would. So, you can get the entire URO plate. That’s more expensive than our 5 limit we’ve set, which we might do at another time. Yes. This is all the same stuff you get on the Euro plate, just less of it. And it’s all wrapped up in a sandwich. I think the only way to attack it is one bite at a time. The fries actually add quite a bit to it. Really surprisingly pretty good. The euro meat is really good. Got a nice crunch to it. I don’t think I’ve ever had chicken euro before. Chicken euro. Yeah. So, one of the keys to good euro is they need to be serving it quite a lot. So, they need a lot of people coming and eating because then they’re cutting the euro fresh regularly. And that’s what they’re doing here. I’m with you. The price, right? They actually give a little bit more than you would think. But yes, thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you so much. Yeah. Thank you. Appreciate that. Well, we will get more food. We’re going to come back and get more food. That was so sweet. We got a little Yeah, the owner is very kind here. He just came and brought us some gifts. Don’t even know what they are, but that was very kind of Yeah, we’ll have to open it after. That was so sweet. But that chicken euro, it is so juicy. So much flavor. I’ve got to eat something else cuz I could just dive in and finish that right now. But I need to try this sublaki while it’s still hot. We put some freshly squeezed lemon juice on it. [Music] That is packed with flavor. Oh man. I would expect it to be dry if I’m being honest, but surprisingly it’s not. And that lemon juice has so much flavor to it. I’m right there with you. I mean, this chicken easily dries out, not dried out, but it’s also seasoned so well. So much flavor. Yeah. Trying to get the pork one off here, guys. Oh, look. Matt giving me the first piece. He ate the first chicken one. Did y’all notice that? He was so hungry. I forgot. That one had a little bit of fat on it, but it was rendered really well. Crunchy on the outside, but try. Yeah, I was about to say that’s even juicier than the chicken because the higher fat content and pork. Man, this is not disappointed at all. This has exceeded all my expectations. Made all of my Euro pizza dreams come true. And the fact that this is how much? That was €350. Yeah, 350. That’s amazing. Very filling. [Music] We’re going to go finish this food, possibly order some more. But we hope you’ve enjoyed this video and we hope it’s helped you plan your Athens food adventures. And if it did, make sure you give it a big thumbs up and also hit the subscribe button. and we’ll see you in the next video. So, we are So, we are definitely feel like I’m going to be getting those sesame seeds out of my teeth all day. This is why I have gum, but I didn’t bring it because you guys judge me. Boris, so terrifying. I was trying to look cool rather than going like this. So, I was standing here on the corner looking ahead of us like, “Where’s the place we’re looking for? Where’s the place?” Oh, right here, guys. This is where we’re going next. More ancient ruins beside the dumpsters. It’s wild. Matt heard a car coming and he went like this to sneeze and then he looks at me and he goes, “Uh, the guy’s car windows was open.” I didn’t realize his window was open. He’s like right here. I mean, I still covered my mouth, but I definitely sneezed in his direction. [Music] Heat.

  1. greek yogurt, honey and walnuts is one of the oldest deserts on earth, the Ancient Greeks ate it and vowed by it. It gave/gives energy and power. So glad u liked our food and deserts.

  2. Athen's street food; Hands down the best sweet fried treats in the world. Twenty years later my Dr. and pharmacy reward me with frequent flyer miles. LOL Although one only gets to live life once, it must depend on HOW LONG that once is. Enjoy Athens but not too much. Great video.

  3. Love your video guys of my city Athens.
    A little history on souvlaki:
In south Greece Athens etc souvlaki means you want it with a pita με απολα (with everything tzatziki tomatoes etc).
If its just the skewer its called kalamaki (it comes from kalami bamboo) from ancient Greece.
Chicken its not traditional as it debuted in the 90s.
Pork and mpifteki are traditional dating back in the 20s….
Mpougatsa its eaten in the morning when its fresh for breakfast.
You guys know how to eat you went to great places with a great product.
Very happy you enjoyed Athens happy travels…🇬🇷💙👏👏👏

  4. 8:40 That is a variety of tiropita called 'τυρόπιτα κουρού' which is with shortcrust pastry. The typical tiropita is with phyllo pastry and there is another type that is with puff pastry. Hope that helps.

  5. Someone probably already said it already in the comment but "mam" is… "mam" like you could call you "mum" in a way, a more "foreign a" than the english "u" in mum. Anyway, "mam" is "food" or "food time" in baby talk in Greece.

  6. NO MY FRIEND NO ..IF YOU WANT TO TRY THE BEST GYROS IN GREECE YOU NEED TO VISIT " ACHILLES (Αχιλλέας) SOYVLAKI" AT "NEOS KOSMOS CITY" IN ATHENS …OR "EXPRESS GRILL" IN THESSALONIKI !! THOSE ARE THE TEMPLES OF SOYVLAKI IN GREECE …NTO THE VIRAL ONES
    ❤❤❤❤

  7. Vistited Greece two weeks ago. The best dish I ate was roasted lamb at a restaurant in Santorini. The place is apparently very popular. It is located just outside of Fira. Many locals and tourists alike arrive in cars for dinner. The lamb dish was huge! More than 500 g of meat cooked to perfection. I didn’t think I would be able to finish it, but I did not know it would be that good. Greek yogurt made from goat milk is also incredible. It is available at stores. It has the picture of goats on the container. I wish they sell it in US.

  8. Mam is indeed pronounced "mam". It's the greek word for what you'd write as "nom nom" and also a casual fun way to say "eating". And "yamas" is a shortened version of the phrase "stin iya mas" meaning "to our health"

  9. You got a tiropita version called kourou. We have many versions of phyllo, and many versions of tiropita. The most common phyllo version is the one you had on your spanakopita, and this is common for tiropita as well, let's say it is "the default". Phyllo kourou is thicker and more bread-like, it is not everyone's taste. It is more dense and mouthful that's why tiropita kourou is smaller than the "common" tiropita.
