EXPLORING UNTOUCHED SANTORINI WITH A LOCAL GUIDE
[Music] I watch you as you drive. Do you know I’m looking and I can’t help but smile. Do you know how much I love you? You put my favorite song on. I put my feet up and we just sing along and I can’t help but feeling just loving this moment. Can we stay here forever? I’m loving this moment. Can we stay here together? If I could stop the [Music] church has from three bells and more. The chapel has from two and less. Three and less. And they pro they more smaller than the the churches. [Music] Thank you. [Music] Do you know why we paint everything white? Cuz it’s hot. Exactly. If you don’t paint it white. Exactly. And also that’s also I see some new buildings that are black and I’m thinking, “Oh, that’s terrible.” But also, there’s another reason why we paint everything white. Because we we we have every day blue skies. We combine the whiteness of the buildings with the blue of the sky and the sea. which are the colors of our flag. Clever. But we do that only on the islands because it gets hot. It’s your size door, isn’t it? Nancy. Tic tac starfish. Do you want to look around? Take a look around. We can take a breath and we can continue. It’s up to you. What happens is if she stops, she’ll start buying. So, what’s wrong with that? Yeah. What’s wrong with that? Anyway, if I see something I must have, I stop you and say wait. I think I’ll say we can do that on the way down. So, we can take the breath. Okay. We can catch our breaths. All right. So, you have to remember to have space on the left. Yeah. Meaning we can’t jump down and have to come back this way. It’s not the only store. [Music] Church also. Church down there. Two beds. Yeah. So there That part of the island there, it’s called Akiri, is where the ancient the ruins are. That’s Yes. We last time we were here, we visited those ruins. Plus, the red beach is there. Wow. And we we’re going to see that when we take a catamaran trip. All right. That’s nice. A couple days. So, do you know what the three bells on every church means? No. It’s about the Holy Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That’s that’s only in Christianity. The Catholics. I don’t know if you’re Catholics. You’re Catholic, sir. That has to be we all have the faith. Don’t say that. So that that’s a church of St. Nicholas. I wish we could enter so I could show you the inside of it, but unfortunately it’s closed at the moment. It’s closed. Yeah. And it says from 1660. St. Nicholas. That’s Yes. That’s the year he was born. Okay. In the US, St. Nicholas is the person who comes on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus. Big fat guy with white beard and a red suit. I’ve heard of him. He’s called St. Nicholas, too. Okay. Just just just trying to share. So, this is the Castelli Square that leads us up to the cast. We’re We’re not there up yet. Go, madam. Okay. Good thing it’s all downhill going up. Going up is tough. Yes. But we’re getting there. No rush. We take our time. Do you hear that? Do you hear that? Come. That’s grease. That’s grease. That instrument is grease. [Music] Thank you. We’re still climbing up [Music] the castle. I mean what? So remain of it. So like I said, it’s a medieval. Yes. Goes back to the 1500s. Okay. They built it here on that hill that was on the other. Okay. Because of the monastery, they were not allowed the castle of Santorini. This is it’s not old. You can see it goes down also. down. So, a brief um fast history. All that here, all that here that’s now water, it used to be solid land. This island used to be called Stragili which means round which means round before the big eruption uh 16,000 years BC this island was thriving in any kind of uh essence uh merchants um people were rich it was also part of the minan era from uh to crit Because archaeologist found artifacts from crit to here. So imagine from that point there which is oya all the way down to the other point which is ai all all in the middle solid land. That island there in the middle the black one that’s the volcano. That’s the volcano that caused everything. When that thing erupted, it destroyed all that. It created that cliff which is now we call Caldera. One of the most beautiful natural disasters. And that eruption was the second biggest after Pompei. The second biggest in history after Pompei. Eruption like that changes the climate. It did. It makes a cloud that did for a long time. It did. So when the volcano erupted, the ash cloud covered all the island, all the island for months, months and months. When that finally um fell down, most of that fell into the water and the rest of it on that side which expanded the island in depth because imagine that thing here there it’s so narrow. So that coastline over there from behind the mountain all the way here to enter the black beach it was created by the ash the ash uh cloud when it fell down expanded the island in width. Yes. That’s why we have the black beach. That’s why that coastline it’s all black. And if you drive to Oya from the old road, from the old road up on the mountain, you can see um that there’s a part of the the cliff that’s black that’s volcanic. So that that island there all the way back there, it’s called Ferrarasia. It’s part of the island. It used to be part of Santorini, but it got cut off, right? So that was connected to Santorini. Uh and also come here and see but that small white island there it’s called Astroni which means in English the whiteness of it it’s pish yes it’s pish pish um you can find it also here we have three different kind of rocks black red and white the white is pish black it’s volcanic the red um I don’t remember the exact English term from Sahara dust. No, no, it’s from it’s from the chemical reaction when the volcano erupt. It’s a iron something. Iron oxide. Iron oxide. Yes. That’s why the red bits is red. The color redness. Yeah. So, another fact. I don’t know if you can see all the way there on that rock that sticks out. Yes. Do do you see there? Yes. We call that the pimple. The pimple or the tit or the tit. So the nipple there that there used to be the first ever capital recorded on Santorini after of course the eruption. That was the first capital. There was a castle and houses all the way down to the cliff. We have evidence of that because there are ruins there. There are ruins, caves um that people uh made uh but then of course you know due to wars and you know natural disasters naturally got destroyed there. Not a good spot to build something so steep. Next, Bilos became seven capital Sanini for many years. H but again due to no modern changes and all that you know wars and pirates and all that um changed and FA which is there which is is there became the the capital as it is now. Okay. So FA it’s the remaining capital until now. There is the There’s the airport there. And there is the mountain of the of the prophet Elijah which we’re going to go after here. We’re going to be climbing that mountain. We’re going to walk up there. Are you ready for that? All the way up. Going to walk. Are you ready? [Music] [Music] Me neither. But they are going crazy. When I eat baba beans makes me fart. Yeah. And we also uh 50 years ago and 40 years ago we used to we had um um uh how you say that uh industrial areas factories we produced um tomatoes. Tomatoes. Yes, tomatoes. Now we stopped and uh the main uh uh grow here it’s cherry tomatoes. There are small tomatoes sweet. Now the difficulty is fresh water. Well, so that’s why agriculture is hard to do. Yes. But even though we can grow everything here, we can grow literally everything because the ground the soil helps. It keeps the moisture minerals. It keeps the moisture also. Yes. In the in the winter times when it’s raining, the soil keeps the moisture inside. So we don’t have to water as much as often other uh places do. Yeah. So yeah, that’s uh that’s a brief history. Okay, the view from up there it’s better. Okay. Now when my wife first came here and she opened the little gate to the hotel, she said, “I think I have come to heaven.” Because it felt so amazing to see this. Hey, sir. [Music] You’re welcome. Okay, so we’re looking for some bells for our terrace. Let’s see. [Music] Ding ding ding. Got a winner. Yes. [Music] Nice one. $29.90. $29.90. Yes, you can pay inside, please. I don’t know. Let me That’s a be So again, this is the top of the world. And there’s a monastery up here. And they live up here all the way up here. But yeah, we uh like everywhere we used uh to use horses and you know carriages. Look at this. Look at this hill. Yeah, it’s quite a kind of there. I mean, come let let’s walk let’s walk over there so I can show you uh the other part of the island. All right. So here is the famous black beach. Yes, that’s here. this coastline, that village over there, it’s called Periodondos. The village next to Peribonos is called Perisa where the famous black beaches, but which expands all the way that coastline here all the way back to Camari there. That’s the black beach. And over there, that’s that um color changness of the road. That’s the red beach. Red beach aeri where where the lighthouse is from behind there. The best spot for the sunset. Best spot there. [Music] bury him in the earth and then tell his temperature temperature. Yes. Drops in there. And if you’re like 15 years old and you have a girlfriend, you probably bring a couple beers. Yeah. Into the cave. You come here into the cave, stay cool, comfortable. You don’t worry about the bats and snakes. There’s no bats or snakes here on the island. We don’t we don’t have here anything like that. Well, it’s very convenient for you guys. It is very convenient. It is very good. It’s easy to get the girls to go into the cave. Hey, honey. Come on. I got to here. Let’s go here. This is a church because I know the church. Okay. It’s a church. And people come here during Easter. It’s good. I’m looking for the heart shape. I don’t see the heart. [Music] Hey, sir. [Music] Just loving this moment. Can we stay here forever? I’m loving this moment. Can we stay here together? If I could stop the time, don’t you know that I would? Cuz I’m just loving this moment. Can we stay here forever? Forever. Forever. Forever. I watch you as you sleep. You don’t know I’m looking with you.

Hi! We are An and Jeff Scott, two happily retired septuagenarians from the USA, who had a dream. That dream was to retire in France. So, we sold most of our “stuff”, packed and shipped the rest, and with our bossy little Yorkie, Bella, said “goodbye” to the USA. In 2024, we moved from the sunny coast of southwest Florida to the sunny coast of the south of France, to enjoy our “golden years” and embrace the “joie de vivre” available to us, here in beautiful Nice, France.
Moving from the USA to a foreign country was no small “project”. Through our videos, we’ve been taking you through the Long Stay Visa process, the packing, the purging, the moving, searching for an apartment, creating a great Dossier, learning the way things are done administratively in France, and sharing the steps, talking about what we’ve learned and the ups and the downs.
And now, we continue to share our life, our new life, here in Nice, getting settled, adjusting to the “French” way of doing things, dealing with the French “red tape”, reveling in the beauty of the world around us…and all the while, making every wonderful day in Nice, the best day ever…
