RHODES OLD TOWN | A Tour of Old Town Rhodes, Greece!
RHODES OLD TOWN | A Tour of Old Town Rhodes, Greece!
Come with me as we explore this historic town to see the bars, restaurants, tourist attractions, Hippocrates Square and more at this amazing tourist destination on the island of Rhodes, Greece
Wandering through the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Rhodes is like stepping back in time, with a maze of cobblestone streets and hidden squares. The atmosphere is enchanting, especially as evening falls and the historic buildings glow under the soft lights. You can easily get lost in the winding alleys, discovering charming bars and traditional tavernas tucked away from the main thoroughfares.
Places like Hippocrates Square become hubs of activity, filled with open-air cafés and lively music, perfect for a refreshing drink or a coffee while soaking in the medieval surroundings.
The nightlife here offers a more elegant and relaxed vibe compared to the newer parts of the city. Beyond the historical buildings, the Old Town is a bustling marketplace. The main shopping street, Sokratous Street, is a vibrant, pedestrian-only stretch lined with shops selling everything from tourist souvenirs and local crafts to high-end jewelry and leather goods.
You’ll find a wide variety of handmade ceramics, intricately designed jewelry inspired by ancient Greece, and local products like honey and wine. Don’t be afraid to wander off the main street and explore the smaller alleys like Orfeos Street, where you can find unique, one-of-a-kind items and experience a more authentic shopping experience away from the crowds. The Old Town is also home to some of Rhodes’ most significant historic landmarks.
The Street of the Knights, a beautifully preserved medieval street, leads to the imposing Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. This massive Gothic fortress dominates the skyline and is a must-see for its impressive architecture and historical significance.
Other notable sites include the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, housed in the former Hospital of the Knights, and the Mosque of Suleiman, built to commemorate the Ottoman conquest. For panoramic views of the entire medieval city, consider climbing the Roloi Clock Tower. Exploring these buildings and wandering the ancient city walls gives you a true sense of the city’s rich and complex history.
