Lucerne Switzerland : Best Things to Do, Lake Tours & Hidden Gems 2025

Welcome to Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities. I’m going to take you on a journey through this incredible place that perfectly combines medieval charm with stunning natural beauty. Here we are in central Switzerland, in the heart of the German-speaking region Lucerne sits right on the shores of Lake Lucerne, surrounded by some of the most dramatic Alpine peaks you’ll ever see You know, Lucerne has been welcoming visitors for over 150 years. Famous writers like Mark Twain fell in love with this place, just like millions of visitors continue to do today. Look at this view! Mount Pilatus towers majestically to the south of us, while Mount Rigi rises to the east. Creating this incredible Alpine backdrop that makes Lucerne feel like something out of a fairy tale.” Now, let me tell you about one of the absolute highlights of visiting Lucerne – getting out on Lake Lucerne itself. Trust me, this is an experience you absolutely cannot miss. If you’re looking for a relaxing introduction to the lake, try one of the 1-hour panoramic cruises. Here we are standing in front of Lucerne’s main railway station, and what you’re looking at is actually a fascinating blend of old and new Swiss architecture and engineering. As we walk across this square, you can see the buses that connect to different parts of the city, but we’re heading straight for the lake. And here we are at the Bahnhofquai – that’s the boat terminal area. The terminal is located right across the Bahnhofplatz from Lucerne’s primary railway station. Look at where we are! We’re at the northwest corner of Lake Lucerne, right where the river Reuss leaves the lake and flows north. This isn’t just a random spot – this is the natural hub where the lake, the river, and the city all come together. So what you’re seeing today is actually the result of an incredible reconstruction project. Lucerne’s new terminus station was officially inaugurated in 1991, nearly 20 years after that devastating fire. The station sits right by the side of the lake, making it incredibly easy to board the steamers that operate on Lake Lucerne. You can literally step off your train and onto a boat within minutes – that’s Swiss efficiency at its finest. And here we are approaching Lucerne’s most famous landmark – the Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrücke as it’s known in German. This isn’t just any bridge – this is the symbol of the entire city and one of the most photographed landmarks in all of Switzerland. What you’re looking at is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, constructed in the 1300s For almost 700 years, it has stood as a testament to Lucerne’s rich history. Now, as we walk across the bridge, look up at these triangular painted panels under the roof. These paintings are what make this bridge truly special – very few covered wooden bridges anywhere in the world have old paintings like these under their roofs. Can you imagine? This bridge has been here since the 14th century, with the first written record dating back to 1367. Initially, this bridge was part of the city’s defenses. It was originally planned as part of the town’s fortifications to protect and connect the Old Town with the other side of the River Reuss. The Water Tower was also originally part of Lucerne’s medieval fortifications. Over the centuries, that tower served many purposes – it was used as a prison, an archive, and even a treasury. It’s incredible to think about all the history these stones have witnessed. But I have to tell you about one of the most heartbreaking moments in Lucerne’s modern history. On the night of August 18th, 1993, a major part of the Chapel Bridge caught fire. The devastating fire that spread very rapidly triggered reactions from around the world. The reconstruction of the bridge started very soon after the fire and was completed in just eight months! The “new” Chapel Bridge was reopened on April 14th, 1994. Chapel Bridge Length : The bridge now totals 204.7 metres (672 ft) long Welcome to Rathausquai This promenade along the Reuss River is called Rathausquai, and it’s one of the most scenic dining areas in all of Lucerne. Look at this incredible setting – we have restaurants lined up right along the riverbank with perfect views of the Chapel Bridge and the old town. This corner where we’re standing actually marks the beginning of Lucerne’s Old Town. And here we are at one of Lucerne’s most impressive historic buildings – the Rathaus, or Town Hall, with its magnificent medieval clock tower. This beautiful complex sits right in the heart of Lucerne’s old town on Kornmarkt square. We’re heading from the historic Chapel Bridge area into what’s become the shopping and commercial heart of the city. Now we’re walking towards Schwanenplatz, which translates to Swan Square, and this is going to give us a completely different perspective of Lucerne. This busy square is actually the main arrival point for many tourists visiting Lucerne. Now we’re walking from Schwanenplatz towards the lakeside promenade, and you can already see how the atmosphere starts to change. We’re moving from the busy commercial area toward the peaceful, scenic lakefront. This tree-lined walkway stretches along the shores of Lake Lucerne, offering some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding Swiss Alps. We’re walking along what locals call the Schweizerhofquai and Nationalquai – these are the best-known sections of the promenade. Look at these magnificent trees providing shade, and these perfectly maintained walking paths. Standing here with the lake stretching out in front of us, the Alps rising up all around, and the sound of music floating through the air, you can really understand why Lucerne has been inspiring visitors for over 150 years.
