Portland Dorset UK with Matt
Hey everyone, it’s Matt with Explore the World with Matt. This video we’re going to explore Portland Dorset in the UK along the coast. It’s a beautiful place that I visited and even took a little short hike that you’re going to share with me in this video. Uh this is a view from the island looking north onto the mainland. [Music] Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share my channel. As I first got into town, there was this uh waterfront castle that we went to visit. Uh unfortunately, uh no photography was allowed inside, but got a couple outside shots for you to look at. I don’t recall how old it is, but it’s been here a while. [Music] left the castle and started walking up towards town and uh sidewalks are narrow but it was a beautiful day as you can see the sky is perfectly blue. Can’t have a town in England without having a red telephone booth. I was walking up the hill to get the best view possible, which was where the initial picture came from. [Music] some obstacles along the way, but uh it was still a very pretty walk up the hill. [Music] It’s a pretty gate and [Music] And when I got up to the top of the hill, um, had amazing view looking over a monument. [Music] And then looking back again and I towards the mainland from the I believe this was the the highest point on the hill that I got to. [Music] Also up top you had view of the Olympic rings from when the London games were held and some of the water events were held here on this beach and island area. had to have a picture of me with the Olympic rings as well. [Music] Hadn’t been drinking yet, so I’m guessing that’s sunburn on my nose. Then they had this rock conglomeration that uh was reminiscent of Stonehenge. Uh did not get the history of it, but here it stands. [Music] [Music] Now, there’s a hiking path that I chose to walk back down from the high point back into the city. And this is the beginning of that trail. [Music] As you can see, I’m getting closer back to the city now. The buildings are starting to be visible and this path kind of snake down the the hillside. Everything was lush and green. and a lot of steps, but uh so long you’re not unsteady on your feet, it was an easy walk. [Music] [Music] Now we’re getting closer to civilization and I am starting to think about what I’m going to eat for lunch cuz this started in the morning and now it’s getting to be midday. [Music] Lots of pretty flowers along the way. [Music] This was one of the beaches and it’s not like a beach that I’m used to as far as ocean front because as you can see it’s got gravel instead of sand. So I don’t think I’d want to walk on this in my bare feet. [Music] But taking that away from it, it was still a beautiful beach. [Music] And around here was I was looking at a restaurant and a local guy said, “This place is expensive.” Um, there’s a food truck further down the hill and makes really great food and it’s rather inexpensive. So, I kept on walking and this is what I got from the food truck. Since I live a keto lifestyle, you can see there’s no bun. So he did a lettuce wrap for me with a burger and a diet coke and it was one of the best burgers I had the entire time I was in Europe. So food trucks in the UK uh got a thumbs up from me. uh this was the first time I encountered European cutlery for fast food and so it just struck me and then after this I saw it everywhere but uh wood forks and knives so they’re biodegradable and I thought that was actually kind of cool and this friend was waiting for me to hopefully drop some of my food uh cuz I’m guessing he’s used to people eating at the food truck and then leaving him a few crumbs as they This was the actual truck and as I said it was excellent and it was very reasonable. And I continued walking back towards uh where the ship port was and the beach was on the other side of that hill and it was um kind of blocked the view from where I was walking, but I’m sure it blocks the town from any water. Then I walked past this uh old Chevy sitting there in the parking lot, and it was a a lefthand drive vehicle, so obviously it was imported from the States. And a mean looking little helicopter along the way. And now we’re getting back to the waterfront. And off in the distance you can see the ship, but not quite ready to go there yet. [Music] and the harbor with all the sailboats. [Music] There’s that castle that we started at. um just from the the different angle where you could actually see a little bit of what was facing the water. [Music] Now I went for another hike. Uh there’s the the coast path and basically it goes from essentially the beach level all the way up to the top of the hill at the other end of the island where there was actually an old prism. uh you don’t get a great view, but basically if you look at the trail, it goes inward and then it takes a steep upward angle. And that was pretty much how the whole trail was. I’m used to uh trails that kind of serpentine up the hill, so it’s not as steep, but it was a steep walk. Great wildfire wild flowers. leveled out uh to go underneath the road, but then it goes back up on the other side of the road. You can see again pretty steep. Well, it wasn’t a very long path just because it was angled quite steeply uphill. It made it a little more challenging than most short hikes. [Music] get getting some elevation again and I’m at the road edge uh because there is a road to go up to the prison and so we had to cross it a couple times on the hike. So there’s the trail coming up to the roaded [Music] and then it crosses over to the other side and continues on up. Pretty wild flowers. [Music] and could tell that we must be getting near something because all of a sudden on the trail some steps appeared and everywhere else it would just would have been an angle of dirt. So, uh it was a hint that I think I was almost there. You can see the elevation is considerably higher now than where I started. [Music] There’s my ship [Music] and the amazing blue water and blue sky with a few clouds off in the distance. It was just a pretty day. Give you a closer look of the ship sitting down there all by its lonesome. [Music] Then we finally arrived at the outer wall to the prison complex. So this was the outer gate. Um for the most part this is not an active prison. There is one small area where they are keeping illegal immigrants. This is looking down from the prison gate um to the harbor. [Music] [Music] And I took a little side walk from the gate just to get another angle of some pretty views before actually going through the gate. Once through the gate, you have this road continuing up with a wall on either side. I’m sure some of that’s a security feature because they can definitely see anybody in this approach area getting near the the actual prison. That’s looking back at the gate that I came through. [Music] And now I’m all the way at the top inside the prison. There’s actually a little courtyard where they had a snack bar where you could buy food and drink as a guest. [Music] went to the snack bar and actually bought myself a soda. This was a Tango darkberry sugar-free soda. They have several different flavors and I really enjoyed Tango in general in the UK and it’s a shame that we don’t have it cuz I really liked it. This is part of the old prison complex that’s not in use anymore and it’s just fenced off and starting to be overgrown and some windows broken out. [Music] Then looking over in that direction is where the uh the staff live and management staff live for the detainment compound that’s still up here. [Music] And now it’s time to walk back down to the ship. And maybe you see it’s just a straight line heading down the hill. [Music] Working my way down back to that bridge where it levels out momentarily. [Music] Finally at the bottom and looking back up the hill. It was a great hike. It was a great day. It’s kind of off the beaten path from where a lot of tourists go, but I went here a couple times and I enjoyed it each time. Even got to eat a few local blackberries and raspberries along the trail.
