Dettifoss: Europe’s Most Powerful Waterfall (Iceland Vlog)

Good morning guys, it’s day number five. We are
going to Dettifoss waterfall. We woke up at 7:00 and right now we departed at 7:30. That was very
quick because we didn’t stay to cook breakfast and to eat. I will eat here in front because we
have granola with yogurt and some cooked eggs. We have to drive 46 minutes to the parking because
we are next to Mývatn Lake. So it’s the first time in this trip that we turn back on the same
road because the camping site from yesterday was really weird. It was in the middle of nowhere,
on a private road, there were no lights, there was nothing there other than the campsite and we
had to go around 500 meters on snow to nowhere. So we were a bit scared and we turned back and
we came to this campsite which is more famous. This campsite was nice. It had hot showers, clean
toilets, a nice kitchen where you could cook and had like cooking utensils and so on. So this,
I think this camping site was the best so far. And right now we are very early, which is nice.
I hope we will have time to see the entire North. So when you’re driving in Iceland and it’s
not during summertime, you need to check every single day this website that I put on
the screen right now called Umferðin. I’m not sure how it’s spelled, but anyways, it will
show you the road conditions. And for example, this road appeared as blue when we went there,
which meant that it was snowy and it has a bit of ice, but it was still good for driving.
We have arrived in the parking lot. We are alone with another car and look at this. How
huge this snow is, like it’s above my knee. And there is ice, as you can see, so we have
to be very, very careful how we are walking because it can be a bit dangerous. So I will just
walk like, I don’t know, a penguin or something. It’s so peaceful here.
So if you saw the other videos I have from Iceland, you should know that on our
first day in Iceland it was sunny and there was no snow and it was pretty warm outside. And right now
it’s like a snow paradise. So just so you know, in five days and just changing the location
in Iceland, everything changed and you should expect all the weather types, as you can see.
So Dettifoss, the waterfall that we are going to see now, it is the second largest waterfall
in water volume in Europe. So this one is pretty special. It is so cold, but there’s no wind, so
we are lucky with the weather. I think from what I’ve read online, someone told me that this road
we were on to the waterfall, it was closed until five days ago, so at the beginning of March. And
in other years it opened even in April or May, so got lucky. Be aware of this when planning your
trip. This road may be closed. It had a lot of ice right now when we went, but it was doable, Mike
went slow. And also this path, right now it’s way better, but until now we just walked on snow and
ice as here. We are very close to the waterfall, I think. I see the viewpoint, so it’s around 10
or 15 minutes of walking, which is nice. You can also walk to Selfoss waterfall. I think it’s 15
more minutes or 20 more minutes to walk. But I don’t think we’re going to do it because we are
scared of the road conditions when turning back, so we are a bit in a hurry here to make
sure we we get back to the main road okay. As you can see, the snow around here was no
joke. We were supposed to see some stairs here, which is insane. But anyways, you can finally see
the Dettifoss waterfall here. The visibility will be better later in the video, so we’ll wait a
few moments for the fog to clear up. And now let’s hear this powerful waterfall.
(Sound of powerful waterfall) Now that you’ve heard a little bit of
the waterfall and how powerful it was, I want to keep showing you this beautiful snow
paradise. We were so surprised to see so much snow and the fact that we were able to even visit
this waterfall with this much snow around was incredible. I don’t know how the authorities were
able to clean the path around here because we were because basically only us and another car was here
and for the rest of the days the road was closed, so I was really surprised to see that we
were able to walk around there. But anyways, you can see right now on the screen that the
waterfall is finally more visible and we could see it more clearly, but the fog was coming
and going, so if you stay there for longer, you could see it even better or maybe worse. But
anyways, now that the video is coming to an end, I want to thank you so much for watching. I have
so many videos from Iceland already posted and I have many more still to post. So if you’re
interested in the Ring Road and other travel destinations, make sure you subscribe.
And see you in the next video. Bye bye!
