Pearl of the Adriatic | Why You MUST Visit Dubrovnik, Kotor & Mostar

Has this ever happened to you? Have you
felt connected to a place you have just left? Here I am on the other side of the
world, but my mind is still in the Balkans. [Music] Join me as I revisit my trip to three
of Southeast Europe’s most scenic cities. Dubrovnik in Croatia, Kotor in Montenegro and
Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Come along. Croatia’s jewel Dubrovnik is a UNESCO world
heritage site. It is often called the Pearl of the Adriatic. The sheer scale of Dubrovnik’s
old city walls is incredible. They offer panoramic views of the terra cotta rooftops
and the shimmering Adriatic Sea. The city’s main promenade is bustling with life. Discover
architectural marvels like the Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, and the iconic Onofrio’s
fountain. You will find local artisans showcasing their unique jewelry, traditional
lace work and intricate olive wood carvings. Dubrovnik’s culinary scene is fantastic. Think
fresh seafood straight from the Adriatic. Grilled fish, octopus salad, pair it with local
Croatian wine and you are in gastronomic heaven. In a sundrenched Dubrovnik restaurant, I watched
a woman work with amazing grace. She transformed whole fish into perfect fillets. It was more than
just preparing a meal. It was an act of reverence and a testament to her mastery. The fish, delicate
and flaky, tasted of the Adriatic itself. The woman made us feel less like customers and more
like cherished guests. This simple heartfelt act of service was the most beautiful thing I
witnessed. The Lindo is a dance of the Dubrovnik region. Dance to the rhythmic accompaniment of
a three-stringed instrument resembling a small cello. The Lindo is a lively circle dance led by
a dance master. The couples circle around him. Their movements, a mix of spirited steps, spins
and turns. The Lindo was once a courting ritual. The Lindo Folklore Ensemble, founded in 1965, has
been instrumental in preserving this cherished tradition. Dressed in beautiful handmade
folk costumes, the dancers bring to life the rich cultural history of the region.
Attending a Lindo performance is a must, offering a glimpse into Dubrovnik’s heritage
and the joyous communal spirit of its people. The outfits directly reflect the rich
cultural heritage of Dubrovnik. For the women, the costume has a finely embroidered white linen
blouse with motifs in a combination of red, black, and dark green accented by gold or yellow.
Over this, they wear a vibrant red or black skirt and a colorful apron secured with stiff
sashes. The look is completed with a small red cap or a starched linen headdress that can
be folded into a distinctive winged shape. Men’s costumes typically consist of
a white linen shirt and trousers, a decorated waist coat adorned with metal buttons, and a silk cummer bund. A red fez often wrapped
in a delicate shawl completes the ensemble. Both men and women wear long white knitted socks
and traditional red slipper shoes. [Music] Next we cross into Montenegro to Kotor.
Nestled in the dramatic fjord like Boka Bay, this medieval town is utterly enchanting. The Bay of Kotor is often called
Europe’s southernmost fjord. And when you see these towering mountains
plunging into crystal clear waters, you understand why. The scenic
beauty is simply unmatched. [Music] Kotor’s UNESCO protected old town
is a maze of cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and charming piazzas. [Music] Shop for unique local crafts, often maritime
themed, reflecting Kotor’s rich seafaring history. And keep an eye out for the friendly
resident cats. They are practically the town’s mascots. [Music] May you come away.
[Music] The St. Tryphon Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important religious structures
in the region. Built in the Romanesque style, it has a rich history of surviving and being
rebuilt after devastating earthquakes. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Tryphon, the
patron saint and the protector of the city, whose relics are housed within its walls.
Inside the cathedral’s interior is a testament to centuries of artistry, featuring
beautiful frescos from the 14th century, an ornate Romanesque Gothic cyborium over the
main altar and a valuable treasury filled with gold and silver relics created by local
master craftsmen. Its enduring beauty and historical significance make it a must- visit
landmark for anyone exploring the Bay of Kotor. [Music] Cruise ships offer passengers an
unforgettable experience in Montenegro. Key attractions for visitors arriving
by ship include exploring the medieval old town with its historic walls
and cobblestone streets. Popular excursions and activities from the cruise
port include speedboat tours and boat trips. [Music] The port itself is a convenient gateway situated
just a short walk from the main attractions, allowing visitors to easily explore the rich
culture, history, and natural beauty of Kotor. [Music] for [Music] heat. [Music] Our final stop takes us to Bosnia and
Herzegovina to the truly captivating city of Mostar. Famous for its iconic Stari Most the
old bridge. Mostar is a place where east truly meets west. where Ottoman architecture blends
seamlessly with Austro – Hungarian influences. The Stari Most isn’t just a bridge.
It’s a symbol of connection, resilience, and beauty. Rebuilt after the war, it stands
proudly over the emerald green Neretva River. Keep an eye out for the local divers, a
tradition that dates back centuries. On a prominent hill overlooking the city of Mostar
stands the Franciscan church of St. Peter and Paul and its accompanying bell tower. The original
church was completely destroyed during the Bosnian war. But a new contemporary structure was built
on its foundations. This modern church with its striking 107 m tall peace bell tower is the
tallest bell tower in the entire country. The tower which offers panoramic views of Moster and
its surrounding landscape symbolizes a post for message of peace and reconciliation.
[Music] Let’s [Music] jump. [Music] Bye-bye, Dubrovnik. This is Samita
signing off. Till next time. Bye for now. From the Dubrovnik airport lounge, I had one
last look at the scenic beauty of South-Eastern Europe. I flew to Heathrow airport in London.
I carried with me vivid memories of my trip, the fabulous seafood and wine, the
delicate crafts, and most importantly, the warmth and joy of a community rich
with song, dance, and laughter. [Music] [Music] Have you ever visited any of these

I am Samita, a sustainable fashion designer and an academic. I work closely with eco textiles and artisan crafts.

I am an alumnus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India. I have a Master’s degree in Fashion Design with honors from the Auckland University of Technology.

For my Master’s research project, I worked closely with Tongan Tapa cloth painters. I have worked with buying and fashion houses in the United States of America, Europe, Australasia, and the Middle East. I have dressed models, beauty queens, and film stars. I have been covered widely by print and visual media in Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, and India. I lecture at international conferences and write articles on fashion and textiles in Australia, New Zealand, and India. I was a finalist at the Style Pasifika Fashion Awards in Auckland for two successive years. For a decade, I was the Coordinator of Major Studies (Fashion and Costume Design) at the Academy of Design Australia (AoDA), Port Melbourne.

I felt there was a need for fashion to reinvent itself. Fast fashion, a polluting, wasteful, and unethical industry needed to be replaced with a process that addressed sustainability, ethics, and handmade. I started Deidaaecogifts online. As the name suggests, Deidaaecogiftsonline sells unique gifts that are eco, ethically made, and handcrafted. My label Deidaa was one of the four Australian fashion businesses selected to showcase at World Boutique, Hong Kong.

I was a finalist in the Sustainability Champion of the Year category at the National Retail Awards, Australia, and in the Sustainability category at the Ausmumpreneur Awards in 2021. I was a finalist in three categories of the Ausmumpreneuer Awards – Fashion, Sustainability, and Multicultural Business Excellence. I won the silver trophy in the sustainability category. I was a finalist in the Women of the Year Awards, organised by Kingston City Council in 2022 and 2023 and a finalist at the Sustainable Business Awards 2023, at Kingston City Council, Melbourne, Australia.

  1. For this trip, we used Dubrvnik as a base. We did the trip to Kotor and Mostar in a day from Dubrovnik and back. At Dubrovnik, we stayed in a beautiful AirBnB apartment with a gracious host who gave us free cake, fruits etc. If you need more information please mention in comments.
