Amalfi Coast Walking Tour: Atrani, the Smallest Town in Italy
In this video, we explore Atrani, the Amalfi Coast’s smallest treasure. From the dramatic landscape of a cliff-top town, the colorful buildings that cascade down the hill, and the historic Piazza Umberto I, to the sun-kissed pebble beach and panoramic views of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea, the video reveals the unique character of the Amalfi Coast. Come and experience the beauty and serenity of Atrani and prepare for stunning coastal views!
Atrani, once a small fishing village on the Amalfi Coast, today is the smallest town in Italy with a surface area of 0.12 km2. Located to the east of Amalfi, Atrani is perched on a cliff just above the sea and can be reached by steep steps. Set on the rock, with an ancient medieval structure, Atrani is characterized by houses built at a short distance from each other and often one on top of the other. Located along the Dragone River valley, between Civita Hill and Aureo Hill, Atrani is like a whispered secret along the Amalfi Coast – tiny, timeless and absolutely charming. Dramatically perched between imposing cliffs and the azure Tyrrhenian Sea, with its medieval structure of arcades, alleys and stairs and its colorful houses clustered on the hillside, Atrani creates a breathtaking and “postcard-perfect” scene. Atrani is an idyllic and picturesque place on the Amalfi Coast, waiting to be discovered. Visiting Atrani means that you can enjoy not only the wonderful panorama but also the atmosphere of the ancient seaside villages in southern Italy. Welcome and enjoy watching the video Amalfi Coast Walking Tour: Atrani, the Smallest Town in Italy!
Piazza Umberto I ( “Piazzetta”), located just a few steps from the sea, is the heart of the Italian village, a lively square where locals and visitors gather for coffee, food and people-watching. To reach the Piazza, you have to cross the ancient passageway that connects the beach and sea to the central square of Atrani. Originally built as a shelter for boats during high tides and sea storms, today the charming Piazza is filled with the essentials of Italian life: a general store, barbers, cafes and restaurants. The passageway offers beautiful views of the beach, fishing boats and the sea beyond. Atrani has managed to retain its traditional fishing village atmosphere.
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Atrani was founded in 1274 on the ruins of a medieval fortress to thank the Saint for freeing the village from the Saracen occupation. The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena was restored in 1570 and 1669, and in 1753 the church was extended and acquired its current three-nave structure, and on that occasion the last remains of the old fort were demolished. In 1852 the church was completely modernized by the Salerno architect Lorenzo Casalbore. The church has a beautiful façade, the only example of Rococò on the Amalfi Coast, a majolica dome and a 16th-century bell tower made of brown tuff.
A short distance from Amalfi, you can reach Atrani by walking in about 30 minutes through narrow alleys and up and down cobblestone stairs with unforgettable views. A pedestrian tunnel connects Atrani directly to Amalfi, making it an easy 15-minute walk.
For breathtaking views, you can hike from Atrani to Ravello, climbing stairs carved into the rock and passing through olive and lemon groves. The stepped road that connects the sea to the mountain town of Ravello is one of the most beautiful paths on the Amalfi Coast.
Set between the mountains and the sea, the Amalfi Coast is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of Italy’s most memorable destinations. Located in the Campania region of Italy, the Amalfi Coast displays sky-high costal cliffs raised from the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The coast with its picturesque and multicolored seaside towns offers the traveler probably the most stunning views in Italy.
