KAMIROS RHODES | Exploring the ancient city of Kamiros Rhodes Greece
Visiting the ancient ruined city of Kamiros, also spelled Camiros or Kameiros, is like stepping into a peaceful, forgotten chapter of Hellenistic history on the island of Rhodes. Located approximately 34 kilometers (about 21 miles) southwest of Rhodes Old Town, Kamiros is a relatively short and easy trip by car, bus, or taxi.

Unlike the more bustling ancient sites, Kamiros has no modern town built atop it, preserving its original layout. Visitors can wander through the grid-like streets and the foundations of homes, a testament to the sophisticated urban planning of its time. The city was strategically built on three levels: a residential area, a commercial agora, and an acropolis with a temple to the goddess Athena, offering spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. This unique preservation makes Kamiros one of the best examples of a Classical Greek city.

Kamiros was an important agricultural and commercial center, thriving on the trade of products like wine and figs, and was one of the first cities on the island to mint its own coins. The site also showcases an impressive 6th-century BC cistern, part of an advanced water management system that supplied water to hundreds of families. Although it was twice destroyed by earthquakes, the city was rebuilt, with the main ruins visible today dating from the Hellenistic period. Kamiros was eventually abandoned in the 2nd century BC after the founding of the new city of Rhodes, which offered superior ports and a more advantageous location for trade.

The journey from Rhodes Old Town takes around 45 minutes, making it a perfect day trip for those seeking a more tranquil and immersive historical experience away from the crowds. Visitors can explore the remnants of the Doric columns, the public agora, and the fountain square, gaining a profound appreciation for the ingenuity and daily life of this ancient Greek civilization. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning coastal views truly make a visit to Kamiros a memorable journey back in time.
