Exploring Lindos, Rhodes: Acropolis Tour & Cruise Shore Excursion Tips
Today we’re exploring Lindos and the
Acropolis on the island of Rhodes, one of the most beautiful ports of
call on the Celebrity Silhouette itinerary that was a highlight of
my Celebrity Silhouette cruise. Hi, I’m Bonnie from Bon Voyage Cruise Travel,
and with more than 52 cruises and visits to 72 countries under my belt, I love helping
travelers know what to expect before they get to a destination so they can enjoy
the perfect excursion. I’ll be taking you along on this Lindos shore excursion,
and you’ll see the historic village, the climb to the Acropolis, and what to expect
if you’re visiting Rhodes on a cruise. You’ll see the highlights and know if this climb to
the Acropolis is for you. Let’s get started. Our day began in the historic port of Rhodes. It
is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the medieval walls in Old Town are right outside the cruise
terminal. It’s easy to walk, and later in the day I will show you that. But first, we boarded
a bus for the one-hour drive south to Lindos. As we said, we’re going to be heading
today south and east. On the east coast, where we are now, we have the
Mediterranean Sea. On the west, we have the Aegean Sea. Rhodes is an
island with mountains. Unfortunately, last year we had a big fire, an arson, that
destroyed a large part of the forest. Not all of it, but now only one-third of the island
is covered with forests. It used to be half. The main product here is the olive tree and olive
oil. Have a look on your left and right—you see that they’re red. This is the pottery clay, the
first material used for the famous ceramics of Rhodes. In the traditional villages, food and
drinks are served in local Rhodes ceramics. This is just so pretty—the blue
shutters and the pretty balconies. [Music] It’s olive trees for olive oil. On the way, we
stopped at a pottery-making workshop where red clay ceramics are famous in Rhodes. The artisans
here produce high-end pieces, and many guests picked up souvenirs to take home. It was a good
introduction to the island’s traditional craft. After about an hour, we arrived in
Lindos. The village itself is charming. [Music] Well, this is kind of like a lot
of people are here on their own as well as us. She said every
ancient city has an association. It seems like this island is fairly
populated, so I’m glad I ventured out here. It’s a good hour away. Narrow
cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and little shops and cafes tucked into
every corner. What a cute place, really. Our guide gave us two hours here
with the option to shop, relax, or take the climb to the Acropolis.
I feel like I’m in Santorini again. Worried about going up to the
Acropolis? You really don’t need to. We have two hours here in town,
so you can just shop if you want. You don’t have to go up there. You just
have to be back at the bus by 2:00. The Acropolis in Lindos is the main
draw. It’s perched high on a cliff with a panoramic view of St. Paul’s Bay and
the Aegean Sea. The hike is steep, about 250 to 300 stone steps. There are no railings, and
uneven rock paths can be slippery. In summer, it can reach as hot as 110 to 115°, so it’s not
for everyone. My tip to you is bring some water, wear good shoes, and know your
limits. If the climb seems too much, just enjoy the town instead. There is a
beach nearby, and it’s equally rewarding. The entrance fee into the
Acropolis is roughly around $28, but if you have a shore excursion
like I did, it was included in the cost. The views are spectacular. However, if you have
a problem with walking, this will be extremely difficult. At the top, you’ll find ancient ruins,
including the Temple of Athena Lindia, Hellenistic structures, and medieval fortifications. It
reminded me of the Acropolis in Athens in a way. It was a little different though—the scale,
the history, and the sweeping views across the sea were completely its own. It was crowded,
but it was worth the effort in my opinion. [Music] Look at this place. St. Paul’s Bay. [Music] Coming down takes the same steep path, so allow
for time. Going down is a little crazy because there are no handrails. With only two hours
in Lindos, climbing usually means skipping lunch or shopping. There are donkeys available
for going down, but that’s a personal choice. My husband stayed in town while I made the climb,
so you can tailor the visit to whatever suits you. On the return to Rhodes, I realized just
how beautiful the cruise port itself is. The medieval walls in Old Town are right next
door to the ship. There are shops, cafes, and plenty of cats wandering around.
Since we were docked until midnight, it was easy to explore more after the excursion. World Heritage City. That’s part of
the Old Town. Straight out the gates, you’ll see the medieval walls. It reminds me
of Taormina or another ancient European town. We have another cat friend. This one’s very quiet. Lindos and the Acropolis were a highlight
of this itinerary. Between the history, the scenery, and the charm of Rhodes town itself, this was one of my favorite ports. And if you
have the chance to visit Rhodes, don’t miss it. It’s been my pleasure showing you Lindos, the
Acropolis, and the cruise port of Rhodes. If you have found this helpful, informative, or you
