Malaysia: The Most Underrated Travel Destination

Not only is Malaysia a melting pot of ethnic cultures, but it’s also a blend of many different customs, cuisines, and religions, all coexisting peacefully together. From large island groups to mountains and tropical rainforest, the country’s geography is every bit as diverse. What’s more, Malaysia is a unique country in that it’s divided into two main land masses. West Malaysia occupies the southern half of a peninsula shared with Thailand, while East Malaysia is situated on the Borneo Island. Here’s a look at the most amazing places to visit in Malaysia. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Lying on the west coast of the Malaysian Peninsula, Malaa is a unique place to visit due to the British, Dutch, and Portuguese all having ruled here at one point. As such, there is a wealth of colonial architecture to explore with each nation having left its mark in terms of the buildings left behind and the cultural impact that they had. With a lively night market and a wide range of different cuisines, this charming city is understandably a popular tourist destination in Malaysia. [Music] The Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysia’s most popular tourist destinations. A collection of peaceful townships perched 1500 meters high on a nest of serene mountains. It has a population of more than 34,000 people consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians, and other ethnic groups. The Cameron Highlands is renowned for its trails as they lead visitors through the forest to waterfalls and other tranquil spots. Apart from its jungle walks, the sanctuary is also known for its tea plantations and strawberry farms sprawl lazily across lush valleys and meandering hill slopes. The perfect setting for a relaxing holiday. [Music] [Music] Towering 4,95 m, Mount Kinabalu is the highest peak in Malaysia and is the highest mountain between the Himalayas and the island of New Guinea. Climbing the mountain is a physically challenging but achievable trek for fit individuals, requiring a tour and guide due to limited daily permits and offers stunning views from the summit after a multi-day ascent. For those with limited time or energy, there are gardens and many short walks through the jungle to enjoy in the vicinity of the entrance. [Music] [Music] [Music] travelers who make their way to Batu Caves, which is just north of Koala Lumpur will be rewarded with some pretty awesome Hindu art. The three main caves that make up Batu caves make it the most popular Hindu shrine outside of India and attract thousands of worshippers. The highlight of the site is a Hindu shrine featuring colorful art and 272 steps that ascend to its main cathedral cave culminating in the view of a giant golden statue of the deity Marugan. This site is significant for its art history and as the location for the annual Taipu sam festival. [Music] [Music] [Music] Paneang is a state in northwest Malaysia comprising mainland Seberong Parai and Paneang Island. Historically regarded as the pearl of the orient because of its important location along the sea trade route, Paneang is a colorful island shaped by its diverse culture, heritage, and world famous cuisine. A musto here is a stroll around historic Georgetown to see its colonial buildings, stately mansions, and lovely temples. Visitors will find plenty of activities that range from excellent shopping to horse riding on the beach, photographing snakes in the snake temple, and cable car rides up to Paneang Hill. [Music] Koala Lumpur is a bustling city that serves as the capital of Malaysia and it’s the country’s most populous city. It has a landscape filled with innovatively designed skyscrapers. Its modern skyline is dominated by the 451 meter tall Petronis Twin Towers, a pair of glass and steelclad skyscrapers with Islamic motifs, and they are the world’s tallest twin towers. Koala Lumpur is also home to British colonial era landmarks such as the Koala Lumpur railway station and a Sultan Abdul Samad building. The Bukit Bentang pedestrian bridge connects the downtown area and a bird park that is the world’s largest walk-in aviary. [Music] Heat. Heat. N. [Music] [Music] Malaysia’s best known holiday destination, Lancawi is a duty-free island archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea. By far the largest of the islands is the aonomous Pulo Lancawi with a population of about 65,000. With its many diverse landscapes of beaches, mountains, rainforest, and mangrove wetlands, Lancawi offers tourists a great variety of things to see and do. A popular activity here is to take a cable car ride and walk across the sky bridge to see incredible views across to Thailand. [Music] [Music] Encompassing three states across the northern part of West Malaysia, Tam Nagara is reputed to be the oldest tropical rainforest that is said to be 130 million years old. A popular ecoourism destination, this national park is teeming with wildlife from rare plants like the enormous flowers of the raffleia plant and scarce animals like the Malayan tiger and Sumatran rhinoceros. One of the most popular things to do in Tammen Nagara is the canopy walk, a long suspension bridge high above the treetops where visitors can walk and glimpse exotic birds. [Music] Hallelujah. [Music] Famous for its extraordinary limestone carst formations and phenomenal cave systems, the Gunnong Mulu National Park is one of the most awe inspiring natural attractions in all of Southeast Asia. If you visit, you’ll want to check out the Sarowok Chamber, which is big enough to hold 40 Boeing 747 aircraft. And you’ll also want to hike to the Pacu Waterfall. While longer multi-day treks are possible, there are also plenty of shorter hikes that are just as scenic. [Music] Oh, [Music] heat, heat. [Music] Located off the coast of northeastern Malaysia, not far from the Thai border, the Parhentian islands are a must- vvisit place in Malaysia for budget travelers. The two main islands are Parhentian Basar, meaning big Parhention, and Parhentian Kachil, meaning small Parhention. The small uninhabited islands of Suzu Dara, meaning virgin milk, Serenay and Rawa, lie off Kachiel. Parhentian Basar has some of Malaysia’s most beautiful beaches and great diving with plenty of cheap accommodation.
