The ULTIMATE Athens Food Tour

[Music] I’m Maria and I’m Greek. I’m Olivia and I’m not. But we live here. And in this video, we’re going to show you what to eat in a day here in [Music] Athens. When we talk about good bakeries, this is actually it. This might be my favorite kebab ever. [Music] I think we may have found the best corner in a Let’s go. Let’s go. [Music] We are going to start our food adventure day in Athens here at Takis Bakery, which is a really, really popular local institution here that has gone back almost 50 years, three generations. It’s very popular with locals and tourists. Really excited to try everything. [Music] All right, we got all of our goodies. Quite a few actually. A lot of very traditional Greek pastries. And we are sitting right next door. So, Takis is right across and we’re sitting right here at Dugisperia. So, you can come grab your coffee from over here and grab your pastries right across the small alley. It’s a very convenient location. It’s quiet. and you’re away from the morning rush. So it feels like a cozy tucked away corner here in the center. I prepared a very simple breakfast which was the breakfast back in the days. Grandfather Theodore started the business and they moved with the family from Tusaloniki and they brought the original recipe of kuluri. Back then it was just a kuluri and maybe a piece of cheese and that was just a simple breakfast with your coffee. And then we started making more things and more things. And my father traveled to Germany. He worked there for a couple of months at a bakery in order to bring more recipes. We ended up having more than 50 kinds of bread selling more than 400 [Music] products. We’re going to start with the kuru. Oh, you can see how nice the dough is. One of the tricky parts of making this dough is not having it dry enough. It can get so dry that you need a sip of water every time you have a bite. But I think this one is going to be. And you can also tell like how layered the dough for some layers. No way. I I knew it just by looking at it. Perfect amount of moisture filling and the sesame on top, the crunchiness on the outside, the softness on the inside. It’s a very nice flavor. I’m gonna start my breakfast the traditional way, which we learned was the kuri with the cheese. Take a [Music] bite. I love something so simple. It’s like bread and cheese. And you can tell when things are done really well because it’s so good when it’s so simple and it it makes them arc. And that’s how I feel about this. The flavor was really nice. The sesame flavor and with the cheese just finishes it off perfectly. Up next, one of my absolute favorites, Bugatta. And you’ve got to try this when you come to Greece. This is the sweet version and original as well. You can find salty fillings. This is I guess I would say like vanilla cream inside. The dough they use is a close relative to filow dough, but they work it a little differently. They layer it. It’s a small variation, I’d say. So, it doesn’t have that crunchiness. It has more of a chewiness, especially like once you get on the bottom layers that are touching the custard. And that’s one of the best things. The traditional way is to top it with cinnamon and sugar. Powdered sugar. Smells really nice. That was one of the first things I could smell as we walked into the bakery. M amazing. Very picky when I’m judging my bua. And this is really good. This is one of the softest, smoothest custard feelings I’ve had on a buata. Just the texture of the custard in your mouth is just so good. Sometimes it can be a little chunky because they use salina for the custard. And this is just a pure velvety smoothness. It’s so good. And now for one of my favorite Greek pie, chicken pie, which is done with felo chicken and also has cheese. And now I’m seeing mushroom as well. Pastry looks amazing. I can’t wait. The flavors are so good and it tastes so fresh. But also, I like how the pastry, it’s not so hard. It’s not so intense. It actually just all molds together so well and the peppers with the chicken. Very, very good. After a conversation with Amis, one of the owners of Takis Bakery, we found out that the place we’re going to be going to for lunch, they supply their bread. And they actually supply the bread in a lot of local institutions here in Athens. Here it feels like a bakery I would go to when I was a kid. When we talk about good bakeries, this is actually it. And I don’t think I’m exaggerating, right, Olivia? It’s fantastic. So close to the Acropolis, especially if you’re staying mirani pla area where we’re sitting right now for a coffee in the Spritzeria. And actually, they just celebrated their 10year anniversary. And this is the first spritzeria in Greece. Couple more things to try. We’re not done yet. See a lot of chocolate, which makes me very happy. It’s so good. I love how the chocolate chips are a little melted and they blend with the custard flavor from the butter and the pastry. It’s just perfect for the coffee. I’m very happy. Seems like it’s super traditional, but also has like modern cakes and bakes at the same time. And I think it’s quite hard to balance both and they seem to be doing it perfectly. And I think this chocolate chip banana bread is the perfect reflection of that. I have never seen chocolate chip banana bread in a bakery in Greece and it’s one of my favorite. I absolutely love banana bread and it ticks everything that to me makes a really good banana bread, which I will say is a lot of chocolate. And this actually has probably small pieces all throughout the bread. So you have chocolate in every bite, not too moist, not too dry, perfectly in the middle. And I think there may be a bit of a lure in here as well. I’m getting like a lure taste. And last but not least, we have this little like almost cheese Danish. I would think it’s like a sweet cheese little pillow. And the pastry for this looks incredible. I absolutely love sweet cheese pastries, cheese danishes. So I think I’m going to have to say this one of my favorite things. Wow. But I It’s very simple, but it’s those flavors. Sweet cheese. I have something to tell you. It’s goat. It’s goat. Did you taste it? So Olivia always stays away from goat cheese, goat milk. So I didn’t say anything just so I can get her reaction. And this turned out to be your favorite. Yeah, I’ve evolved. But no, like normally even if I know I can sit there and I can make the taste come to me, it’s not coming. It just tastes like creamy cheese. Wow. Yeah, cuz I think the pastry is also made with goat milk. [Music] We just got our first view of Acropolis for the day. Let’s go see it up [Music] close. This is one of my favorite streets to come walk to. Have amazing views day and night of the Acropolis, the Parthonon on top of it, and at night it has different vibes. people taking their evening stroll. You have the musicians. A lot of times you have like little concerts where people will sit in these and just sit, bring some snacks and enjoy the moment. Actually, the yogurt place we’re going to is a little further down on this pedestrian street, right next to the McDonald’s. Let’s go. [Music] For our second breakfast, we’re going to be grabbing a very traditional Greek breakfast, but also dessert. We’re going to go have a yogurt. I love yogurt very, very much. I’m excited. And it has a lot of protein, so you can start your day with a good chunk of protein, so you can be energized for all the walking around you’re going to be doing if you’re going to be exploring the city. [Music] M I need to put this down. It’s like eating ice cream. I’m not even tasting the yogurt anymore cuz the sweetness of the chocolate and the cookies, that crunch it gave and the strawberries are delicious. I can’t wait to see Olivia’s face when she tries this. The yogurt itself is really nice. It’s just the right amount of tang and creaminess. The other flavors is so good. Now, we’re heading to grab lunch at a very, very local place. He makes the best kebabs. Oh, I can smell them from here. I’m so excited. and we’re gonna pass up an ethnic stadium. So, that’s going to be a nice sight to see. [Music] [Applause] [Music] In order to go to the neighborhood of Pagrati, we are crossing through Zapio, which is the biggest urban park that Athens city center has. It’s really beautiful and you can hear the birds and there’s a quite a few events that go on throughout the year over here. And there’s we’re about to approach a very beautiful building over there. [Music] Our food has arrived and it smells as good as I remember. It’s been about a year since I’ve had this. And the reason why we love this place is because they grill everything on charcoal. So, the meat gets this like smokiness from the grill. Plus, they use really good stuff, the marinade. The kebabs are the best. Lemon. I’m just gonna put it everywhere cuz a little lemon never hurt anyone. Wow. The meat is so juicy. This might be my favorite kebab ever. I’ve had a lot of kebabs here in Greece and this is the best. And this is why it’s in this video. You need to come here. There’s another location. You can choose from quite a few meats here. We got the kebab, the sausage, and the pork. I’m going to try the pork first. Is that the top? It’s tender. It has a juicy flavor and that smoked charcoal flavor, which is so good. I’ll try the sausage, too. While we’re at it, the sausage has leak in it, too, which adds a really nice flavor to it. Highly recommend coming here. [Music] This one is a spot we’ve been quite a few times. And if you like profiderals or soup, this is the place for you. It’s delicious. A lot of different flavor. And so now we’re coming down to see Dagma. And we’ll be going through the shopping street. It’s the perfect spot to do a little shopping, get some souvenirs, anything you might need for your trip. [Music] We are here at Shural which is very aptly titled considering they sell the best perfidel shoe paste drinks. We got one with hazelnut praline and pistachio cream and tons of pistachios on top and it looks so good. And it’s kind of off the main road. You may not even know that it’s here. So definitely come and give it a chance. Before we even came to the tables to come sit, we could smell the sue that is just they just keep supplying the oven with more and more sue because this place is so busy. The line right now is cut actually out the door. So, we were lucky enough to go before the line started. Wow. This is going to be a bite. You’d think being trapped in here would be soggy, but it’s so crispy. And it’s because they make it to order. Wow. M. This is custardy. And everything is just the perfect sweetness. Sometimes you can go somewhere and it’s very, very sweet. This is just perfect and refreshing and kind of cool. So, now that it’s getting hot, you’re going to get refreshed. Why are we in the rental car? I don’t know. Well, I guess this would be a good moment to tell you about Discover Cars. It’s an agency where it helps you figure out cheapest car rentals no matter where you’re at in the world. Olivia and I have been using it for the last four years now and we’ve been getting some amazing deals not booking with your typical Herds Avis. So, if you’re planning on renting a car and you want to help us out because these videos are not easy or cheap to make, please help us out by clicking the affiliate link in the description. And we get a small commission every time you book a car when you use our link. And there’s no extra cost to you. We actually use the same link when we book. So, we get a few dollars even on our car rentals. [Music] Cheers. For dinner, we have found ourselves in this romantic neighborhood of Placa. It’s a bit of a hidden pedestrian street, so you have to look for it to find it. If the food is as good as the vibes, I’m going to be very happy today. This is actually a place we have not tried. We were walking by, we saw the food, we saw the reviews, and we said maybe we try this one. So, this is the wild car restaurant we’re going to be eating at for this video. The name is called Ayarides and that is because of the monument that’s a few feet away from us. It means something with the wind. And the house wine is delicious. This is actually good to know. In Greek restaurants in Greece, if you come to a place, you can always have the house wine, which is a lot cheaper than the bottled wine that they provide here. And so this one for 500 ml was €9. Typically the prices range from five to [Music] 9. So your typical fried squid which is called calamari here. And it comes with a lemon sauce. So let’s see. The squid has a really nice soft chew and nice flavor. It is missing a bit of salt though. What I’m really curious about is the scopelos cheese pie. So, it’s basically a filo filled with cheese from Scopelo, deep fried honey on top and walnuts. I mean, can’t really go wrong with deep fried cheese. So, let’s open it up and look see what it looks like inside. Smells very nice. My hope is that it’s not go cheese. No, it’s not. That’s good. This is very, very nice. Very nice soft flavor. You have a little more texture and flavor than cream cheese, but it’s basically cream cheese. I hope my next bite has a little more honey so I can really get the contrast between the saltiness and sweetness. It’s like a very comforting flavor. We also got the grilled octopus with fava and dill and it looks really good. I really love fava. I really love octopus and smells really nice as well. Let’s see. I think I got too big of a bite together. I don’t know if I would have it like choose it, but it’s nice. Both separate. Together, it’s okay. I actually disagree. I tried the octopus and the fava together, and they’re really nice. And I got to say, I’m very picky with olive oil, and their olive oil here is very [Music] nice. And we got a pork steak, which is a very popular dish here in Greece, rather than a beef steak. Oh, I got to put some lemon, of course, cuz here in Greece, we put lemon in everything. The flavors are really nice and it has a smokiness. So, I think they probably grilled it on top of fire. So, I’m going to try the potato. They actually did it the right way. Like the smashed potatoes, they have this like nice crispiness on the outside, so you have a lot of crunch, nice and soft, and a lot of flavor inside. And the other main dish, we went with some classic Greek lemon chicken. I think one of my favorite flavors is honey and lemon mustard. So, can’t go wrong with lemon chicken. It has that charcoal flavor, which is really nice. The chicken is good. It’s such a straightforward dish, you can’t really mess it up. But I’m very impressed. We really like the food here. And especially in such a touristy area, it’s nice to have some pretty decent food. For a very touristy area, the food is very good. But if I were to rate vibes and food, I’d say vibes are probably a nine out of 10. Yeah, I would say food. I’d say it’s about seven and a half to eight out of 10. That’s solid. We hope our suggestions have been helpful. And you can find your next place to eat when you’re here in Athens, right? Yeah.
