Frankfurt Christmas Markets 🎄 Germany’s Modern City with a Medieval Heart | Christmas in Europe

There’s a side of Frankfurt you don’t expect. Most people know it is a city of skyscrapers. “Mainhattan” as they call it, being on the Main River. But at Christmas, Frankfurt transforms into a wonderland of lights, old Christmas traditions and markets that make you forget you’re standing in Germany’s modern financial hub. It goes to show that once you scratch the surface, Frankfurt’s also reveals itself. We arrived in Frankfurt for a two-night pre-cruise stay, and immediately discovered that behind the steel and glass lies an older, more magical Frankfurt. The Römer, the city’s medieval square, comes alive in December. half timbered houses wrapped in festive decorations, a towering Christmas tree and one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Here, history and holiday spirit blend seamlessly. The same square where emperors were once crowned. Now echoing with cheerful voices and music. And the aroma of roasted nuts and mulled wine, Frankfurt doesn’t stop at one market. It celebrates Christmas everywhere, from the intimate courtyard of the Thurn and Taxis Palace, where we sipped our very first mug of glühwein hosted by one of Europe’s dazzling aristocratic families, and then to the buzzing Hauptwache and Rossmarkt, all filled with rides, sausages sizzling on the grill, and people gathered under twinkling lights and a festive warmth. There’s even a pink Christmas market. Yes, entirely pink, or around the same hue. This is Frankfurt’s LGBTQ market, glowing with neon lights and a welcoming spirit that makes this season feel even warmer. And for the ultimate Christmas panorama, climb to the rooftop market, atop the Konstablerwache car park, where festive stalls meet sweeping views of the city skyline, a reminder that this is both Germany’s most modern city and one of its most festive. Of course, no German Christmas experience is complete without food. We indulged in Kartoffelpuffer, crispy potato pancakes dripping with garlic sauce, washed down with wine from nearby Franconia. And yes, plenty of bratwurst, plenty of mulled wine and endless laughter with newfound friends. Frankfurt surprised us. Remember this is not just a stopover, not just a financial hub. It’s where your Christmas adventure can truly begin. And if you stay a little longer, there’s so much more to discover. Take a walking tour through Frankfurt’s old town and discover the old Frankfurt magic beneath the steel and concrete. or hop on the double decker bus to see the Mainhattan skyline. And once you’re across the Main river, step into Alt-Sachsenhausen for a hearty meal in a traditional apple wine tavern, which is a must have when you’re here in Frankfurt. Or wander the aisles of Kleinmarkthalle, Frankfurt’s indoor food market, where stalls overflow with local specialties, wines, cheeses, and delicacies. You can even taste some wines on the wine bar on the market’s upper level. These little extras make Frankfurt not only a gateway to Christmas adventure, but a destination worth savouring in its own right. This was actually the beginning of our Christmas River journey. But wait. In 2026, I’m co-hosting a Christmas cruise along the Danube. And I’d love for you to experience this festive spirit for yourself.
