Avoid ATM Scams in Europe: Save $$$ on Currency Conversion! πΈπͺπΊ
– [Johan] Okay, I’m at
an ATM here in Croatia. But what I’m about to
share with you matters all over Europe, and it’s
gonna save you a lot of money just knowing this one thing. Let me just use it and I’ll explain. We’re gonna withdraw something right here. (button beeping) We’re gonna do 100. Receipt, sure. (button beeping) So here, they ask you
about the conversion rate. And this is where it’s very important. You gotta accept this without conversion, otherwise, you’re gonna get robbed. It’s gonna cost me $124 to get a 100 euros if I accept the conversion rate. But check this out, I accept
it without conversion. Oh, that’s that button. (ATM beeping) (button beeping) Yep, so I’m gonna accept
it without conversion. And then look at that. Instead of getting charged
125, you get charged 105. (button beeping) This is very important to know
when you’re travel in Europe. They do this all over Europe,
it’s not only Croatia. (motorcycle engine revving) (ATM beeping) Getting the card, and hopefully,
I’m getting 100 euros. There they are, all right? This is good advice, I’m telling you. So let’s make a withdrawal on this ATM and using US dollars as the currency. (button beeping)
Do a 100 euro. Receipt, yes. (people mumbling) So this is where they
wanna take the money. The conversion’s gonna get 124. And that’s a rip off, but
let’s accept it and see. (button beeping) And they give us another option
to accept with or without, so they’re saving their asses
or covering their asses. (button beeping) (ATM buzzing) Okay, usually they put it on
the screen how much you paid, but they didn’t right now, so it’s gonna be interesting
to see what the receipt says. (ATM beeping) I’ll take the card. I’m gonna get my 100 euros. And I’m getting my receipt. Yeah, they charged me $124. That’s not right. (receipt crunching)
(motorcycle engine revving)
In this video, Johan demonstrates how Americans can avoid being scammed by ATMs in Europe with their terrible conversion rates. π§ Follow along as he walks through the steps at the ATM, showing viewers how declining the conversion option can save them approximately $15 for every $100 withdrawn. π΅ He then repeats the process accepting the conversion and reveals the inflated charges.
We also highlight that this scam is not limited to ATMs β many restaurants are now trying to trap tourists with poor conversion rates by offering to convert the bill to your home currency. π½οΈ Always accept the local currency (euro) and DECLINE conversion to US dollars, GBP, or any other home currency. π« By doing so, you can avoid these extra fees.
When we recorded this video, one euro equaled $1.09, meaning accepting the conversion would cost you an additional $15 on top of every $100 transaction. Stay informed and save your money! π°

Great money saving tip when using the ATMs, I'll bet most people would not know that. You didn't have to waste $20 to prove it though…hahaa
