In this episode of the design tourist, I travel to Airford, the German city that bridges art, craft, history, commerce, and culture. Airford is the capital city of the German state of Thingia. During medieval times, a major trade route ran through Airford, shaping its history, culture, and commerce. The Merchants Bridge, or Kramerbrook as it’s called in German, is an ancient byway along the trade route that evolved into a covered bridge with 32 halfeimbered buildings populated with artist shops on the ground floors and homes on the upper floors. It’s sort of like a medieval mall selling handmade merchandise. So, with that said, let’s go shopping and meet the crafts people who live and work there.
