Living in the French Riviera: Nice’s Antiques Market & Charming Valbonne | SIMPLY SLOW TRAVELER

Hello, everyone! Welcome to a beautiful
sunny morning in Nice in early October. Today, I bring you to the Monday Antiques Market, which spans across Cours Saleya
and Place du Palais de Justice. This is one of the largest antiques markets
in the Côte d’Azur, and it brings together, right by the Old Town of Nice, pretty much all
the Antiques market sellers that are scattered across the different towns and cities
in the remaining days of the week. So, if you love Antiques like I do,
Monday is the day to be in Nice! I arrived in the middle of the
morning, and even in October, you can see that quite a few
people are browsing the market. If you want a quieter experience, or to
be the first to discover the latest items, you should arrive earlier, with the
market opening as early as 7 am. Unlike the flowers and fresh produce market in the
remaining days of the week, the Antiques Market only closes in the late afternoon, at around 6
pm, so even if you just want to visit the city and take a look at what’s up for sale, you can
find the market at almost any time of the day. What draws my attention the most are ceramics
and home textiles, and you can find some very beautiful ones all across the market. If I had an
unlimited budget and space at home, God knows I’d be buying so many, but as it stands, I have to
curb my urge to bring all these beauties home. This time, besides a few old-time cotton napkins,
I bought this beautiful old paper print of the drawing of a hand fan print with some butterflies
in it, which I thought was so very cute. At noon, and as the Nice cannon blast was heard
throughout the Old Town, we went back to Cours Saleya and sat at Carmela for an Italian
lunch overlooking the bustle of the market. After a delicious and light lunch, we walked
along the beach on the Promenade des Anglais, watching quite a few people going for
a swim on this Monday early afternoon. Our next stop was the beautiful Villa
Masséna, an architectural icon in Nice, built in the late 19th century, with a lush
front garden overlooking the Promenade. Inside, the ground floor has a few grand
reception rooms, with high ceilings, artwork all over, and many intricate
woodworking and panelling details. On the top floor, you will find a collection of
items, from posters and prints to books and maps, that tell the story of Nice as a seaside resort
destination for a couple of centuries now. For the latter part of the afternoon, I went
to visit the nearby small town of Valbonne. Unlike many of the medieval villages around
the area, Valbonne’s old town, which was built only in the 16th century, follows a regular grid
pattern, with wider streets that are, nonetheless, very charming, with plants and flowers in
front of every façade and by every doorway. There are also quite a few very interesting
stores in Valbonne, but unfortunately, most of them close on Mondays, so I can’t
show you my favourites in this video. Let me know in the comments if you
would like me to do another video of Valbonne another time, so I can show
you all my favourite places. As for now, I’ll leave you with a few more streets
and the main square of the village, where you have a few cafés, where we
sat for a drink before calling it a day. Thank you for joining me today in exploring the Antiques market in Nice and the
beautiful small town of Valbonne. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to the channel
if you haven’t already, and let me know in the comments if there are any villages in the Côte
d’Azur that you’d love me to feature soon.

  1. Hi everyone! Happy weekend 🍂
I would love to get your opinion if you’d like to see another video where I show more of the village of Valbonne. For this video, we arrived already late in the afternoon on a Monday and many stores were closed, so we didn’t get the chance to show much.

Thank you & I hope you’ve enjoyed this video ♥️
