Lyon, historically known as the Lion of France, is a city located in southeastern France, at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. The seat of the Lyon Metropolitan Council, it is the capital of the Lyon District, located in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Anciently the capital of Gaul during the Roman Empire, Lyon became a commercial city in the Middle Ages and then a leading financial center in the 19th century. Its economic prosperity increased successively due to the silk monopoly and then the emergence of industries, especially textiles and chemicals. Today, it is a major industrial center specializing in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.
