Reutlingen’s Weltrekord 🏆 | Ein Spaziergang durch die Altstadt & die engste Straße 🇩🇪

What can a simple manhole cover reveal about a city? In Reutlingen, quite a lot. Welcome to our walk. The coat of arms on the manhole cover depicts the Imperial Eagle. It is the symbol of Reutlingen’s former importance as a powerful “Free Imperial City.” Here we see the “City Wall Houses.” To save space in the narrow, medieval city of Reutlingen, these houses were built directly against the inner city wall. For centuries, the thick city wall from the 12th and 13th centuries simply served as a solid, stone back wall for these houses. The highlight of Reutlingen: Spreuerhofstrasse, officially the narrowest street in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. At its narrowest point, the street is only 31 centimeters wide. You have to squeeze through from the side! The “street” came about rather by chance: After the massive city fire of 1726, this small gap was left as an escape route during reconstruction. Although the old town appears so medieval, Reutlingen has been an official city since 1988. The Linden Fountain has a long history: The original fountain on this site was built in 1544. After severe damage from war and weather, it was decided in 1954 to faithfully reconstruct the fountain, for which purpose casts of the original figures were made. We approach Reutlingen’s landmark: the Gothic St. Mary’s Church. It is considered one of the most beautiful churches of its kind in all of Swabia. A famous detail at the top of the west tower: The gilded angel from the 14th century serves as a weather vane and is a symbol of the city. A catastrophe in the midst of war: During the Albstadt earthquake on May 28, 1943, the angel fell from the 71-meter-high spire. Directly in front of the Natural History Museum is this popular hands-on experiment: the Water Vortex Column. By vigorously turning the crank, the water in the column is set into rapid rotation. Due to this rotation, centrifugal force pushes the water against the outer wall of the column. This causes the water level in the center to drop significantly, creating a visible air vortex – the “tornado.” One of the highlights in Reutlingen is the Guild Fountain on Wilhelmstraße. It was designed by the artist Bonifatius Stirnberg, famous for his interactive sculptures. The figures are therefore intentionally rotatable to bring the story to life for everyone. It’s a living monument that interactively tells the history of work and craftsmanship in Reutlingen. The Coopers: These craftsmen made the important barrels for wine and other goods. The Grocers: The traders and small merchants who kept trade flowing in the city. The Shoemakers: Another important guild that looked after the welfare of the citizens. The Butchers: The butcher trade, recognizable by its axe, was a proud and influential guild. The Carchers: The carters who secured the transport of goods with their carts. The Winegrowers (Wengerter): A reminder of Reutlingen’s long history as an important wine-growing town. The Tucher: The clothmakers produced and traded fabrics and were a very wealthy guild. The Blacksmiths: Indispensable for tools and weapons in medieval town life. The Furriers: Specialists in processing fur into valuable clothing. The Tailors: Responsible for making clothing for the townspeople. The Tanners: They processed animal hides into leather and were economically very important to the town. The Bakers: With the pretzel as their guild symbol, one of the oldest guilds in the town. We are standing in the market square, the economic and social center of the Free Imperial City of Reutlingen for centuries. This fountain, dating from 1570, is the Maximilian Fountain. It is dedicated to Emperor Maximilian II. Like many of the city’s old fountains, the figure we see today is a copy. The heavily weathered original statue from the 16th century is kept in the local museum. Why honor an emperor here? Because Maximilian II confirmed the city of Reutlingen’s important market rights, thus laying the foundation for its prosperity. By far the most famous son of Reutlingen is Friedrich List, born in 1789. He was a brilliant economist and visionary who was far ahead of his time. His great vision was a united Germany with a comprehensive railway network to promote trade and prosperity for all. He is considered the “Father of the German Railway.” Because of his liberal ideas, he was politically persecuted, even imprisoned, and temporarily emigrated to the USA. Although his ideas had a decisive influence on Germany, Friedrich List died impoverished and unrecognized. His genius was only fully recognized long after his death. It seems almost inconspicuous next to the enormous St. Mary’s Church, but this is St. Nicholas’ Church, built around 1358. We are at the Garden Gate, one of the few remaining gates of the medieval city wall. A look at the event highlights for the rest of 2025. A tip for every visitor: Here you can not only get free city maps, but also the best insider tips for exploring the city. We are standing in front of the Tübingen Gate, the largest, most magnificent, and most important of Reutlingen’s former seven city gates. The gate was part of a double defensive system with a foregate and a Zwinger. Thank you for joining me on this tour through the historic yet vibrant Reutlingen. See you next time!
