A Fairytale Castle in Germany Still Owned by the Same Family | Burg Eltz
Hidden in the hills of the Mosul Valley lies a castle that’s never been conquered in 850 years. This is Borg Els, a castle that has been in the same family for 33 generations. And you’re probably looking at it saying, “Wow, this looks like a fairy tale castle or maybe even something out of Harry Potter. It definitely is probably what you’re imagining as a kid when you think of Europe or you think of German castles.” But beyond the fairy tale charm, this thing has so much history, and we first need to dive into the history as well as later the legends. El’s Castle began around the 12th century on a medieval trade route perched above a riverbend. Instead of one lord’s residence, it became a joint air castle. Three branches of the Elts family literally living side by side in their own towers. Through feuds, fires, and even Napoleon’s armies, the castle survived untouched. Today, Els Castle is still family-owned, a living time capsule of medieval Germany. Its walls telling stories of knights, noble squables, and centuries of survival. One minute, one history, adventure awaits.
Hidden in Germany’s Moselle Valley, Eltz Castle has stood unconquered for 850 years, passed down through 33 generations of the same family. This medieval fairy-tale fortress was home to multiple branches of the Eltz family, surviving feuds, fires, and Napoleon’s armies. Today, it remains a living museum of German history, with knights’ halls, treasury artifacts, and stunning views—bringing centuries of medieval life vividly to visitors.
