Perpignan is a city in southern France, located near the Mediterranean coast and just 30 kilometers from the Spanish border. It is the capital of the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the Occitanie region. With a population of around 120,000 in the city proper and more in the surrounding metropolitan area, Perpignan is the largest urban center in French Catalonia. Its position between the Pyrenees mountains and the sea gives it both cultural and economic significance.
Today, Perpignan serves as an important administrative and commercial hub. The city is the seat of local government for the department and provides a wide range of services, from education and healthcare to commerce and industry. It benefits from transport links that connect it to the wider region, including road and rail networks leading north to Narbonne and Toulouse, south into Spain, and east to the Mediterranean coast. The city has a train station that serves regional and high-speed trains, including links to Paris and Barcelona. Nearby, Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport connects the area with domestic and limited international destinations.
Culturally, Perpignan has a distinct identity shaped by both French and Catalan influences. Catalan is still spoken by some of the population, and the city is proud of its cross-border heritage. Festivals, food traditions, and local customs reflect this cultural blend. Catalan flags and symbols are visible throughout the city, reinforcing its dual character. The historic center retains medieval streets and squares, giving it a strong sense of continuity with its past, while modern districts have expanded the urban area.
Tourism plays a significant role in the local economy. Visitors are drawn to Perpignan for its Mediterranean climate, heritage sites, and proximity to the beaches of the Côte Vermeille. Landmarks include the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, a 13th-century fortress, and the Castillet, a former city gate that now serves as a museum. The city also promotes its cultural life through theaters, music events, and annual celebrations. One of the most notable gatherings is the international photojournalism festival, Visa pour l’Image, which attracts professionals and visitors from around the world.
Economically, Perpignan is supported by a combination of services, agriculture, and industry. The surrounding region produces wine, fruit, and vegetables, which are distributed across France and beyond. The city is also known as a logistics hub, particularly for fresh produce, due to its transport links and Mediterranean port connections nearby. Small industries and retail further contribute to employment and commerce within the urban area.
Modern Perpignan has a diverse population, with communities of North African and Spanish descent alongside long-established local families. This diversity has influenced the city’s culture, food, and daily life, making it a dynamic and multicultural place. Education is served by schools, vocational institutions, and a university, which supports both local and international students. Healthcare facilities, cultural centers, and public services ensure that the city functions as the main service center of the department.
Today, Perpignan balances its historic role as a Catalan stronghold with its modern role as a French regional capital. Its location near Spain, its Mediterranean character, and its cultural identity make it a distinctive city within France. It remains a place where history, tradition, and modern urban life converge, offering both residents and visitors a strong sense of identity and connection to the wider region.
