The Route de la Bérarde (Departmental Road D530) is a famous 27-kilometre dead-end mountain road in the French Alps, renowned for its dramatic scenery as it penetrates deep into the Écrins National Park. Often called the “road to the end of the world,” it runs from Le Clapier (near Bourg d’Oisans) up the Vénéon Valley to the small, isolated mountain hamlet of La Bérarde at an altitude of 1,727 metres. Classified as a “balcony road,” the narrow, winding route is carved into the steep cliffs, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, many of which soar above 3,000 and 4,000 metres. The road, which was opened to vehicles in 1921, includes several challenging sections with sharp hairpins, steep gradients reaching 13%, and short, narrow tunnels. It passes through the historic mountaineering village of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans before continuing into the wilder, upper valley. La Bérarde itself is a major centre for alpinism, serving as the starting point for ascents of famous peaks like La Meije and numerous high-mountain hikes. The route’s remote character and breathtaking immersion into the high-alpine environment make it a popular, though cautious, drive for tourists, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
