Porte Cailhau. – Bordeaux France – ECTV
Hey everybody, this is Eric Clark’s Travel Videos and I’m here in uh Bordeaux, France and I’m at Port Calo Calhou Cow something and it’s a pretty ornate little gate. It’s one of the arches I guess or entranceways into the city, but it’s certainly amazing. Wow. Yeah. Incredible. Makes you wonder if anybody ever lived up there. You know, is that like a widow’s walk? Maybe the little thing on top. I don’t know. You know, obviously that’s not the traditional widow’s walk, but uh still incredible. And I’m going to go to the other side and I’m going to see if I can find the exact I mean, I can give you the exact name. Port Port Kalhoo and I I think the O and the U is uh um correct but I don’t I don’t know how that goes. So this is it. It’s a historic place and it says Port Kal Hala. You see my problem anyway. Amazing. Very amazing. Let me get to the other side here and uh and then I can share a little bit more with you. But uh certainly incredible. Wow. All right, let’s get to the other side. Enough of this side, huh? And you know, it’s funny. You see the little doors right here? There’s wooden ones like one over there, two, three, four, five. And I think they go all the way around. Is that for like uh archers or defense or other? Oh, there is a sign. Who’s your daddy? Let me see if I can stand in front of this so you guys can see it better. And it’s not in English. Oh, but this one is um I’m not blocking it very good, am I? Anyway, let me try it without blocking it. Hit pause if you want to read that. Charles the 81 1495. Pretty amazing. Wow. And it looks like you can go up it for about um full tariff is €7 and then you can climb the towers. Yeah. Yeah. I bet it’s pretty rounded inside there. Let’s go to the other side here and take a peek. I’d walk backwards, but my luck is I’d be on the ground in a second. So, this used to be a port. So, you can see here where this wall would connect to a city wall, and it looks like it had a door at one time, or still does have a door, actually. So, that would go into the inside of the wall of the castle wall. Wow. And those little doors do go all the way around, which is pretty amazing. Yeah. Incredible. Wow. All right, everybody. That’s it. Another one of the sites for Bordeaux. Bye-bye.
The Cailhau gate (porta deu Calhau in 1450)[2] or Porte du Palais is a gate in the city of Bordeaux, in the Gironde department of France. It served as both a defensive gate and a triumphal arch (presence of a niche with the effigy of the king)[3]. It has been classified as a historical monument since May 28, 1883[1].
Situation
The Cailhau Gate stands on the Place du Palais on the river side. Located between the mouths of Bordeaux’s two main rivers, the Peugue (Cours d’Alsace et Lorraine) and the Devèze (Rue de la Devise), it was the main entrance to the city from the port. It gave access to the Palais de l’Ombrière, residence of the Dukes of Guyenne, then seat of the Parliament of Bordeaux from 1462.
At the time, vertical platforms did not exist. The bank sloped gently down to the river and light boats unloaded the ships anchored in the river.
Toponymy
The name of the tower means pebble (calhau in Gascon). It was given to the gently sloping quay located between the two rivers, which was “called the quai daü Caillaü (du Caillou), because because of its usefulness, it was the first to be paved with river pebbles. (…) This gate being placed opposite the Quai du Caillaü, naturally had to take this name. »[4],[Note 1].
This name is shared with the powerful medieval Bordeaux bourgeois family of Cailhau or Caillau, established near the Palais de l’Ombrière not far from the fortified gate that would perpetuate their name, and which gave several mayors to the city (13th – 14th century)[3].
