Hello everyone and welcome to the transit nomad family. City transit cost difference in Sophia, Bulgaria versus Brussels, Belgium. That’s what we’re going to talk about in this video. But before we get started, I’d like to let you know that as an active traveler and business owner with experience, I might be able to assist you with trip planning, life coaching, and business consulting with all the details available at buymeacopy.com/transit nomad or through the link in the video description below. With that being said, let’s begin discussing Sopia transit pricing and comparing it with the cost of public transportation in Belgium and Brussels in particular because that is what I was staying for the most part of my trip. You can see Sophia some has some very cool trams still running in 2025. Uh lots of different transit vehicles. That’s why I came here to explore all the vintage transit that’s happening in 2025 in Sofia. So exciting. But uh speaking of the cost, let’s begin talking about the airport ride. When I was leaving Belgium, I was staying just a little bit outside of the uh Brussels area near a station called called Vil Vde. And uh I was heading to the airport which was also located just outside of Brussels on the other side of town. And it was uh about an hour and 15 minutes or an hour and 25 minutes or something like that of riding transit. First uh involving a train ride and then um transferring to a bus. And the whole ride actually cost me $20, about $20 American dollars. So for me and my partner, it was $40, which is pretty crazy amount considering that it’s only just a little over an hour and we didn’t go too far away from uh the city, which which I think is really expensive considering how many uh hours we rode the transit for all the other days and how much that cost added up. Public transportation in Belgium starts at only €3 for a single ride for one person and it goes up if you go outside of the city center. So if you do the math, it’s going to cost a lot when you go to Belgium. Now in Sophia, Bulgaria, when we arrived, we took a bus from the airport to the place where we are staying, and it cost us, believe it or not, only a dollar per person. So about $2 American dollars. uh to get from the airport to our Airbnb. So, the price difference if you do the math is actually 20 times, which I think is really crazy. I know that Eastern Europe is less expensive and the economy is different and the currency exchange rate and all of that, but it’s probably half the price for most things when it comes to accommodation or food. maybe one/ird of the price you would pay in Sofia compared to what you would pay in um Brussels, but in this case the difference is 20 times. Yeah, I know it’s a it’s a shorter ride, but still 20 times is a pretty substantial amount. Also, if you are using public transportation in Belgium, if you are riding it all day, the price for an unlimited rides would cost about €8 for just the city center, and it would go up based on the distance. In Sofia, it’s only about €2 American or €2 to ride transit as much as you want. That includes buses, trolley buses, trams, metro, subway, you name it. So the price difference is huge. And also in Belgium, you have to download the app if you want to ride trains and uh in addition to buses and trams. And that app requires for you to know which transit agency you’re about to use and knowing their logos and also knowing how to choose the right option, the right pass for the right zone, which takes a little bit of time to figure all of that out. And it’s a little bit complicated if you’re not familiar. So, it’s not very userfriendly. You can still tap your credit card on trams and buses, but you can’t tap it on trains. And train travel is a big thing in in and around Brussels in and in Belgium in general. So you kind of have to use that app. And because you can’t tap with credit cards, it makes it more complicated because if you are using just the app and you tap it on trains, then you try to use the same app to uh pay for transit when you are inside a bus or a tram. And I I’ve asked the drivers to help me figure out how to tap it. there’s no way to tap it on the bus or or a tram. Um, and they don’t know if it’s valid or it’s not valid. It shows that it’s valid on the smartphone, but it’s kind of a gray area. It wasn’t very clear to me uh how to combine paying for the trains and the buses and the trams. So, in addition to the high cost, it was also not very convenient. Now, when it comes to Sofia, Bulgaria, it’s a lot more straightforward. You don’t need to download or install any apps or buy any passes because the price is the same. In Belgium, if you’re buying uh 10 tickets ahead of time, you get a discount, which is a pretty substantial amount if you’re paying for multiple people. It kind of makes sense to do that. If you’re going to use transit a lot, but in Sofia, it makes no difference. It’s just a dollar per ride. I’m giving you approximate pricing. It’s about a dollar per ride or $2 for unlimited trips for the whole day. And you can tap your card when you enter. And the price is not affected by the distance. It’s only affected by the time. Um 30 minutes versus 60 minutes. That’s all under a dollar or the whole day, which is about $2 and some change. I think this is very reasonable. I love the pricing here in Sofia. You don’t need to calculate anything. you don’t need to tap it when you get out. The only thing is that they do not accept American Express, which is also the case in a lot of different places in Belgium. American Express is not always accepted. So, make sure you travel with a backup card um such as a Visa or a Mastercard or something that is more commonly accepted in um in some countries. Keep that in mind. uh paying with the Visa and Mastercard is not a problem in Sofia. It was also not a problem in Brussels or anywhere else in Belgium. But Amex American Express, that can be a problem. With that being said, I believe I’ve covered it all and I want to ask you if you know if you happen to know why there is such a big price difference because I understand okay Belgium could be twice more expensive. Okay, three times more expensive but in this case we are talking about the average of about four, five, six times difference how much extra you have to pay for public transportation. So why is it so much cheaper in Europe? Please let me know in the comment section below why is it so much cheaper in Eastern Europe in Sofia and in other Eastern European countries. I noticed that the service is about the same. The quality is uh similar. Actually, sometimes it’s even better. The frequencies are higher. So, you don’t have to wait for your tram or your bus for so long. And um the most of the trams and buses are new and air conditioned and high floor. You can find old trams like this, but for the most part, everything is new. So, I don’t understand why the cost difference is so dramatic.
