Lagos, Portugal : Sunshine and Old Walls
Getting some food for our bus ride. We were not allowed to bring our food. Oh no. into the bus. Today our trip will start in the beautiful city of Coimbra and we will be heading to Lagos in the Algar region of Portugal. The bus ride is a 464 kilometers lasting approximately 6 hours. We arrived to Lagos. Time to get accommodated in the Airbnb that we reserved. Lagos will be our base for the next 11 days and we were lucky to find a very nice Airbnb. Yeah. Nice. The next day we went to this local gym that has a fabulous deal for temporary visitors. For €22 you can work out for 5 hours. In addition, you pay a deposit of €20 that you get back at the end. are in Lagos for our first day. We plan to be here for 10 I think 10 11 days. 10 11 days and then we go to a different city in the Algar. Lagos is a jewel in the western Algar region which is the southernmost region of Portugal. Take my shoes off. One of the interesting facts about Lagos is that it isn’t about its stunning beaches. It’s about its past. For a brief powerful period of in the 15th century, Lagos was the center of the entire known world. Where is this taking us? Where will it lead? Do you know? Wow. Here is the shade. Oh, yeah. This small port town was the birthplace of the age of discovery. From this coast, Prince Henry’s ships set to sail to map the coast of Africa. Oh no, there is no water to clean off the sand from our feet. So, we have to improvise. The city of Lagos is also a survivor. It was devastatingly he by the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 San Gonzalo. This historic core that we are walking today was rebuilt retaining its ancient wall layout. We want to find a coffee but everything is closing. So first one was already closed. Now we need to look for some others. Chloe needs her coffee. Look at her. Like we need to find a coffee that is open. We found it. Hola. Hola. Nobody’s here. So in Colombia they most of the farmers as a person born in Colombia I can say that the coffee that is prepared here is excellent. These are the main cobblestone streets and alleys within the walls filled with traditional Portuguese houses, shops, restaurants, and bars. They are the pools of Lagos current life. What we don’t understand is how many people like to smoke or enjoy smoking. Uh especially younger younger generations. And if they knew how how they get old so soon, probably they will stop smoking. The historic center is very walkable and offers a vivid sense of the city’s long and often dramatic journey from an ancient trading post to a global hub and finally to the vibrant Algarver destination it is today. Now it’s time for some food. I’m eating bakalao. So cod. Wow. What is that? This is wedding linguini. Okay. Seafood.
Day 43 was a major transition day! We said goodbye to the historic charm of Coimbra and made the long journey south to the sunny Algarve, arriving in Lagos via bus. Travel days are tough, but after checking in, we immediately did a short workout to stretch our legs and shake off the bus ride fatigue.
The rest of the day was spent on our first exploratory walks through the beautiful historic town center of Lagos. We’re officially by the ocean now, and the atmosphere is already feeling different! Join us as we settle into our new base and start exploring the Algarve coast.
