Welcome to Salzburg, Austria! Today we’re going on a walk through this beautiful, fairytale city! Salzburg is a beautiful city located in western Austria, near the border with Germany. It lies on the banks of the Salzach River, surrounded by the Austrian Alps, about halfway between Munich and Vienna. The name Salzburg literally means “Salt Fortress,” a reference to the region’s historic wealth built on salt mining — once known as “white gold.” The city’s origins date back to Roman times, when it was founded as Juvavum around 15 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the area became an important religious and cultural center. In 696 AD, St. Rupert established a monastery here, marking the true beginning of Salzburg’s development as a city. During the Middle Ages, Salzburg became the seat of powerful Prince-Archbishops, who ruled both spiritually and politically. They transformed the city into one of Europe’s most magnificent baroque centers – — a legacy that still defines its skyline today, with elegant domes, churches, and palaces. The city’s most iconic landmark, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, was built in the 11th century and expanded over time. It remains one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. We’ll soon see this fortress on our walk and enjoy the beautiful views of the city. In 1756, Salzburg gained worldwide fame as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the greatest composers in history. His legacy continues to shape the city’s cultural identity, with music festivals, concerts, and monuments celebrating his genius. You can still visit his childhood home (Mozart’s Geburtshaus) in the old town. After centuries of independence, Salzburg was annexed by Austria in 1816. During the 20th century, the city became known not only for its music and architecture but also for its cinematic beauty — it famously served as a filming location for The Sound of Music.
