The Colosseum is located in the heart of Rome, Italy, just east of the Roman Forum. Officially known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, it is one of the most iconic and visited historical landmarks in the world.

The Colosseum is made of travertine limestone, tuff (volcanic rock) and brick concrete. It is estimated to have held between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators at various points in its history,with an average attendance of around 65,000;it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, including animal hunts and executions. It was used to stage famous battles and dramas based on Roman mythology, and briefly mock naval battles.
