Crossing through Central Europe on a night train – Budapest to Berlin on the “Metropol Euronight”

Hello and welcome to Budapest Keleti station This is the most important station in the hungarian capital The station was opened in 1884 to serve the east of Hungary Today the station has links to Romania and most of central Europe Coming in we are greeted by the impressive train shed There are ticket machines scattered around the station The building is host to diverse shops But also eateries and station services It is always a pleasure to walk through this beautiful station Integrating the shops and services into the original building was a great initiative This is the left wing of the station when coming from outside Absolutely stunning Tonight we are travelling on EN 40476 to Berlin HBF This is a section of the famous Metropol Euronight train The train is composed of 3 sections from Budapest to Berlin Warsaw and Prague We leave Budapest Keleti station on time The journey will take around 14 hours We cross through the northern suburbs of Budapest A quick look at the compartment There are 6 couchettes in total 4 power sockets are present in the compartment There is space to store your luggage You can buy food on board from the attendant I didn’t have time to buy anything before due to the late arrival of my earlier train Our train is speeding north to the slovakian border We stop at our first station Vác To the left of the train you will see the Danube We follow the river to Slovakia This part of the line is quite scenic The train makes a service stop at Szob This is the border town with Slovakia We leave shortly after with no border controls The bridge on the Ipoly river marks the border This river takes it source in the Danube Welcome to Slovakia Our train stops at Štúrovo station where the crew changes We leave on time We cross some flat lands Time to look around the train The Czech couchette car Each compartment has 6 couchettes The Czech sleeping car for the Prague portion There are 3 beds in each compartment A polish seating car for the Warsaw portion In each compartment are 6 seats There seems to be no polish couchette car on this train Just the sleeping car It’s quite eerie The hungarian sleeping car for the Berlin portion There are 3 beds in each compartment As a sleeping car passenger you get a full breakfast And finally the hungarian couchette car These couchettes are very uncomfortable I will try to avoid these in the future Let’s have a look at the toilets They were fine The water works by pushing buttons Everything was clean stocked and functional Our train is speeding through the south west of Slovakia We then stop at Nové Zamky station One of Slovakia’s busiest stations Night is falling as we head towards the capital Around an hour later we enter Bratislava And stop at Bratislava Hlavná Stanica The main station of the Slovakian capital Time to make my bed for the night As the train heads for the Czech border it’s time to get some sleep Good morning from Děčín During the night our train crossed Czechia We are now in the west of the country near the german border Our section was attached to NJ 456 from Wien in Břeclav We leave Děčín on time Our train crosses through the city And follows the Elbe river The sun is starting to rise Giving us the opportunity to admire this beautiful scenery A light breakfast is served We’ve crossed the german border Our train stops at Bad Schandau station Here the Deutsche Bundespolizei will board the train and stay with us until Dresden Passports are checked even though we are in the Schengen zone We roll through small german towns on the Elbe banks We enter the Dresden area And make a stop at Dresden HBF We stay here for some time And in true german fashion we leave late Our train crosses this beautiful city To then make a stop at Dresden Neustadt station We are now non stop to Berlin This will take around 2 hours We pass through german villages And fields By the time we enter Berlin’s suburbs we’ve made up our delay It’s time to conclude this journey This train is a great way to link central Europe together However the hungarian couchettes are very uncomfortable I do not recommend them pay the extra for a bed It’s a beautiful journey if you do it during the summer when theres daylight on the best sections I was travelling with an Interrail pass So I paid a reservation fee of 44€ Normal fares on this train are quite cheap if booked in advance on the hungarian railways website We are now entering Berlin Südkreuz Then we continue to the main station Through the Berlin tunnels Passing through the famous Potsdamer Platz We arrive a few minutes later at Berlin HBF The train stays here for a bit but do get off quickly As it will leave for the depot shortly after Welcome to Berlin Thanks for watching and see you soon

  1. Is it going today to/from Nyugati? I will take the train this december from Berlin to Belgrade with transfer in Budapest and the Belgrade train will go from Nyugati.
