The Insane Village Hanging From A Cliff: Rocamadour Walking Tour 4K

Pilgrims hammer nails into the wooden post as an ex-voto or offering. Visiting the Sanctuary is a spiritual journey on the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Camino de Santiago. The sanctuary is a complex of monastic buildings, chapels, and a basilica literally built into the cliff face of the Alzou canyon. In the Middle Ages, Rocamadour was one of the three most important pilgrimage destinations in the Christian world, alongside the Holy Land and Santiago de Compostela. This chapel was consecrated to the world of rugby in 2011. The walls are covered with rugby jerseys and other objects donated by famous French and international players and clubs. It serves as a unique place of memory and support for the entire rugby community, which is a strong tradition in the Quercy region. Another wooden post covered in nails The Chapel of Notre-Dame houses the famous wooden statue of the Black Madonna (Vierge Noire). This Romanesque statue, carved from walnut wood, has been venerated for nearly a millennium and is associated with numerous miracles. You can hear the mass going on in the basilica next door. The Gran Organ wooden casing is shaped like the prow of a ship jutting out from the cliff wall and resting against the first pillar of the Basilica. This unique design is a deliberate and powerful nod to the long and intimate connection between Rocamadour, its Black Madonna (Our Lady of Rocamadour), and the world of sailors (mariners). For centuries, the Black Madonna has been venerated as the patron saint and protector of those at sea. This staircase leads to the village below. We visited on a Sunday, so some of the shops & restaurants were closed. Be sure to explore all the alleys so you don’t miss any of the viewpoints. The Grand Escalier is the most symbolic part of the Rocamadour pilgrimage. Historically, and even by some faithful today, pilgrims would climb these 216 steps on their knees as an act of penance or devotion. I did went up on my way back and hauling my 30 pounds of camera gear up the Grand Escalier was a spiritual and physical challenge all its own. Penance paid! 🙏📸😅 The 3 distinct levels of the village, reference its medieval social structure. The Lower Level (The Village Street) is The Lay/Secular World 🛍️, full of life and commerce but still where the peasants belong…😉 The Middle Level (The Sanctuary) where the Clergy/Church 🙏, held the spiritual power. The Porte Salmon is the only one of the town’s original medieval gates that still retains its guard tower. You can see how the city was structured for defense, with the gates closing at night. The name is thought to come from the abundance of salmon that were historically present in the local rivers, so much so that workers sometimes requested in their contracts not to be fed salmon more than three times a week!😅 The village famous cheese has a long history! Its original name was often “Cabécou de Rocamadour” (cabécou meaning “small goat cheese” in the Occitan language). It was so highly valued in the 15th century that it was reportedly used by local peasants to pay rent and taxes!😅 This entrance , Porte du Figuier (Fig Tree Gate)is the most common route to enter the village, if you park on top like yours truly ,you will start with the Sanctuary. From this angle ,you have a really nice view of the Sanctuary and the Castle on top. The Castle is the Top Level where Nobility/Knights 👑, governed and protected. For those of you who want the blessing without the burn, Rocamadour provides! The 216 steps of penance are optional—the lift to the Sanctuary is conveniently located for those of us prioritizing views over virtue.
