Strike, Cliffs, End World in Sagres Portugal

0 1 Let’s get started. Today is a day trip to Sag, Portugal. It is a 1-hour bus ride from Lagos. When we arrived to Sagish, a dense fog is welcoming us. We arrived to Sag. But first, some tea. In medieval times, this area was known as the end of the world as it marked the edge of the known world at the time. These are beautiful colors. From this area, Prince Henry launched several expeditions that charted the coast of Africa and started the age of discovery in Portuguese history. We are going to that fortress. The fortress name is Fortalesa de Sagesh. And as we walk on the south side, we’re able to see the beautiful beaches. There are some clouds. Look like a sandstorm. I don’t know. There are more clouds over there. We got to the fortress. So did the fog. The fog arrived. The staff members of the fortress are on strike. They are demanding better salaries especially for overtime and weekends. These cliffs that we are seeing on the side of Fortallesa are about 40 m or 131 ft. Wow. I wonder how many invaders have tried to scale this wall before. How many have succeeded? And what happened to the ones who didn’t? Now we are going to walk to the Bada Fort located on the east side of Sag. These are the ruins of the fort of Bala. It was badly damaged in an English raid in 1587. It was abandoned in the 19th century after the Portuguese civil war. So the fog was very thick at the west side. So we decided to come to the east side and yeah so it’s beautiful here. So, I think it a this would be a perfect place for uh coming in the fall and learning to surf. Why not, right? Now, we continue our walk to Ponta de Atallaya. Atallaya means sentinel in Portuguese and this point was used for surveillance and defense. Sagish is where the Algar’s shelter southern coast meets the wilder winder western coast. This results in dramatic cliffs, rugged landscapes and strong winds. Uh we’re going to see if we can catch the bus, the 4:00 bus. Um the way here it was pretty good. So it was uh 1 hour and 10 minutes ride and it was only um €11 for two people. So €5.5 each. and uh was comfortable. A little hot at the end because there was no air conditioning, but there’s also a ready Espresso’s bus that’s a little bit faster, but it’s different times and I’m not sure where it leaves from. Yeah. Now it’s time for us to go back to Lagos.

Our day trip to Sagres was an exercise in turning disappointment into discovery! We traveled all the way to see the historic Fortaleza de Sagres but were met with an unexpected staff strike, meaning we couldn’t go inside.
Instead of letting it ruin the day, we pivoted and explored all the stunning outdoor sites this dramatic area has to offer! We walked the rugged cliffs of the Ponta de Sagres, taking in views that truly feel like the end of the world.
This video is a great reminder that when one door closes while traveling, another, more spectacular path always opens up. We show you the very best cliff walks and epic views you can get in Sagres without needing a ticket!
