Osnabrük Old Town 2 of 2

Mark, which means coffee at the market. Cafe at market means coffee. What’s it mean? At the market. Cafe at the market. Coffee at the market. Okay. Or cafe at the market, I should say. And next to the cafe is the pizza house. Oh, the pizza house. Okay. Okay. Wow. Look at those flying buttresses. I mean, they’re pretty small compared to like say the Notraam, but still pretty neat. So, where is this? The pizza. Oh, there it is. Ah, yeah. The Now, that’s the nicest pizzeria I’ve ever seen in my life. Pizza House. Beautiful weather. It’s partly cloudy. So comfortable.

We are continuing our tour of the old town in Osnabrük.

The Peace of Westphalia in 1648 is Osnabrück’s most significant historical moment:
* Along with Münster, Osnabrück hosted negotiations to end the devastating Thirty Years’ War
* The Protestant negotiations took place in Osnabrück’s Town Hall (Rathaus), while Catholic negotiations occurred in Münster
*The Peace of Westphalia, signed in 1648, fundamentally reshaped European politics and established principles of state sovereignty and religious tolerance
* This treaty is considered the foundation of the modern international state system
* Osnabrück celebrates this legacy as a “City of Peace”

The heart of the old town features:
St. Mary’s Church (Marienkirche): A Gothic hall church built in the 13th-14th centuries, it dominates the market square with its distinctive tower and is one of the city’s most important landmarks.

Town Hall (Rathaus): Built in the late Gothic style (1487-1512), this is where the Protestant peace negotiations took place. The Peace Hall (Friedenssaal) where the treaty was signed can still be visited and contains portraits of the negotiators and contemporary artifacts. Traditional gabled merchant houses line the square, though many are reconstructions after WWII damage.

St. Peter’s Cathedral (Dom):
* Construction began in the 11th century on Romanesque foundations
* The cathedral combines Romanesque and Gothic elements
* It houses significant medieval art, including a bronze baptismal font and the triumphal cross
* The cathedral and its surrounding area (Domhof) form an important historic district

Heger Tor:
* One of the few surviving medieval city gates, built around 1200
* Originally part of the city’s defensive walls
* Modified over centuries but retains its medieval character
* Became a war memorial in the 19th century with the addition of a Waterloo monument
