Christmas Like You’ve Never Seen Before | Monaco, Monte Carlo 4K Walk

Welcome to Monaco at Christmastime! Today you’ll see with your own eyes how Monaco is decorated for Christmas! The main Christmas market takes place at Port Hercules, right by the sea. It first appeared in the early 2000s and quickly became one of the most charming winter events on the Riviera. We’ll definitely stop by there later on our route. For now, let’s explore the decorations at Casino Square – and discover what hides inside the Monte-Carlo Casino. Most of the decorations are installed in mid-November and stay until early January. All the lights are LED, which significantly reduces energy use compared to past years. A lot of the decorations are reused now to reduce their impact on the environment. The Christmas decorations at Casino Square are installed every year by the Société des Bains de Mer, the same company that owns the Monte-Carlo Casino and the major hotels around it. Monaco is known for its elegant Christmas decorations, and the atmosphere here is much calmer than in bigger cities. Public outdoor Christmas decorations only began appearing in the 1960s and 1970s, during the reign of Prince Rainier III. At that time, they were just simple lights and a few Christmas trees. The main Christmas tree is also installed here in Casino Square. The official Christmas lights are switched on by the Prince himself. In early December, there’s a lighting ceremony, and Prince Albert II and his family sometimes take part in it. Now let’s take a look at how this world-famous casino is decorated for Christmas. By the way, the casino opened in 1863, with the goal of saving Monaco from a financial crisis. The casino’s revenue effectively funded the principality’s economy. Its revenue allowed Monaco to abolish income tax for residents and that’s still the case today. Security during the Christmas season is provided by the Carabinieri of the Principality, and their presence is discreet. Еhey patrol discreetly to maintain a sense of calm, rather than a feeling of being guarded. Next, we’ll make our way through the boutique street to the port for the main Christmas market, and after that we’ll go up to the Prince’s Palace and the Old Town. Each store decorates its storefront in its own way, but everything has to follow the elegant and understated style. The Christmas market at the port, which we’re heading to now, is the southernmost one on the French Riviera. Which means the Christmas season here is warm. People walk around without freezing temperatures. At the Christmas market, every food stall is selected, nothing is random here. Cafés and vendors go through a selection process to make sure the style and the food match Monaco’s standards. You’ll often find regional products here: truffles, roasted chestnuts, panettone, and Burgundy-style mulled wine. In Monaco, Christmas trees are kept at home longer than in most places in the region. According to local tradition, they’re taken down not right after New Year’s, but on January 6th, for Epiphany. Instead of fireworks, Monaco uses light shows. Because of the small territory and concern for animals, fireworks are used less often, and laser or projection shows are preferred. Firecrackers are banned in Monaco. This helps keep the city quiet, especially since it’s small and densely built. And we’re continuing our walk. Ahead of us are the main Christmas market and the decorations by the Prince’s Palace.
