  1. Aarhus here, the most amasing part of the Old Town museum is that there are no replicas. All the funiture, music and TV sets are originals, historical buildings from all over Denmark were "torn" down brick by brick, tile by tile and numbered so they could be rebuild stone by stone. So everything here is original Danish history, no matter the cost, which makes this museum unique, not only by Danish or European standards.

  2. "Even the rain is authentic" everything done for the tourists we shower you in authentic rain, dad humour at it's best.
While the older stuff is good but I really like the new-ish stuff (born in 1974) it's like a walk down memory lane, where has time gone… The prices on TV, VCR that was expensive to own and if you are curious for the price in £, the TV just shy of 8000 kr would be about 570 £ the exchange rate was back then better 1 £ you got 14 DKK or if you like 5437 £ in today money

  3. Aal Judes fell some “ownership” of this place because the some of buildings is from our own region. When a town needed “modernisation” the oldest buildings was dismantled and send to Aarhus

2 or 3 of them is from my town Aalborg

Den gamle by has been “location” in several Nordic TV shows

  4. Fantastic vlog, I arrived in Denmark in 1979 and we used to rent our tv. your pronunciation of "Gamle By" (Gam-lah Bue ) was so funny, Sorry, but nice try. I'm sure if you lived here you would pick it up quite quickly although some words are horrendous to pronounce.

  5. 70s radio store absolutely brilliant, all the audio tech I drooled over but couldn't afford. Can't think of any UK living history museum with similar set up. One of the tour hilights for me. Thank you.

  6. The Old Town in Aarhus is always fantastic to visit.
For the time area from Stone Age through Middle age and Viking age , you should try visit "Sagnlandet Lejre" ("Lejre Land of Legends") near Lejre, just outside Roskilde.

  7. OE gamul = old / gammel 😉

by [bü ] = town , as in the first part of "ne(w)" – or "rue" = street in French.

You know "by" from the many by-names in Northern and Eastern England.

  8. I live in Aarhus, have done sins 2003. The old town is a nice place to be, my family goes one or two times per year. There is a nice old stile place where you can sit and eat cake and drink coffee. There’s also a place in an underground complex with an old train and the story of Aarhus. There’s also elevator in made to you feel like taking a time travel. Very cool.

  9. Thanks for the guided tour! 👍 Aarhus is my home city, and it must have been at least 10 years since I last visited 'Den Gamle By'.
I can clearly see that many changes has been made, since. So I definitely have to go there again, some day.
I wonder if you noticed the sound of someone practicing Mozart on the flute, coming from an open window in one of the houses? This is actually the sound of me playing the flute, some twenty years ago. They told me to also include some mistakes and to play the same phrase again and again, etc. in order to make it sound as if I was practicing the piece.

  10. 21:00 You don't have to apologize. Danish is a silly language like English, both languages ain't phonetic. Take the letter "D", it has several ways it can sound. From the hard "D" as in Denmark, to a soft "D" and other times it goes totally silent. You have to have learned the language, to know where and when the letters do what.
But I can apologize. Your "Th" words you got from us. So sorry you have to fight with them every day 🙂
Den Gamle By, doesn't it ring a bell?
Grimsby and Derby and other town names ending on "by".
Regarding Grimsby, sometime ago I wrote a mail, to Lincolnshire Life museum and asked if they knew, if it was a Viking called Grim in Grimsby. Here is a snip of the answer:

"Thank you for your email. It is very likely Grimsby, 'Grim's Village', was named after someone of Scandinavian decent called Grimr, and '-by' , village, is the Old Norse place element. There are many place names across the modern county of Lincolnshire with Old Norse place-name elements".

BTW, both English and Danish are a Germanic language.
