Skiing in the world’s largest interconnected ski area. In this video, we’ll take you to Meribel, show you the various options on and off the slopes. And at the end, we’ll ski down one of the longest runs in the area. Let’s get on with it on this ski day. A dream in the snow. That was really cool. Straight from the hotel to the slopes, and you can already see the ski area is getting ready. We’re really early and catch one of the first breezes. Come along. Now the sun is really coming out, and we’ll get an overview. Where are we, anyway? We’re in the French Alps and the world’s largest interconnected ski area: Le Trois-Vallées. And this huge area stretches across three basins, as the name suggests. Over 600 kilometers of slopes that you can ski without any bus connections. It’s absolutely incredible, and we’ll show you the entire piste map. And because this ski area is so big, today we’ll focus on one part of it, namely Meribel. It’s essentially the heart of our large ski area, and we can also see the various connecting points to the other sections of Val Thorens and L’Aminière, where Bastian and I have already been and where you’re currently seeing some footage . The connection towards Courchevel is always recognizable by these red arrows on the piste map. What we also see is that from Méribelle, you usually only need two ski lifts to get to another part of this huge ski area. This makes Méribelle a great starting point to really explore the 600 kilometers of slopes and the various freeriding opportunities. Speaking of which, we’re about to take you along on blue runs, red runs, and even some off-piste skiing, which is quite special here in France. We’re also going to take you to the highest point of the Méribelle section, namely Montvalent, using this gondola. And at the end of the video, there will be a really beautiful, long run. But first, let’s head into the three locations. We are the three locations that will take you to Mairi Band. The first free-ride descent. You can already see “Vertical Experience” behind me. There are a few marked ski routes in this area. It’s ungroomed, hilly, and rocky in places. You have to be careful there. We had a bad experience yesterday when someone slipped sideways off a ridge. It wasn’t pretty; they had to be rescued by the ski patrol. So, if you’re going to ski here, be confident in your skiing technique and bring extra equipment for safety. And we’re doing this now with a view towards Mont Blanc. That peak is emerging from the sea of ​​fog. It’s incredibly beautiful. Come on, let’s take a look. A quick detour to the snow park. And from here, we have a really good view towards the nature reserve you can see over here. It’s especially inviting for winter hiking on the marked trails. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife. And now we’re arriving in Maribel Montarey, one of three places that you can easily reach from here. Look. But what distinguishes these three places? Maribel Village is a charming little chalet village. Things are quieter there. Maribel Center, on the other hand, is much more lively. It’s the largest of the three and offers plenty of options for going out in the evenings. And Maribel Montarey, where we’re standing right now, is the highest-altitude resort, located directly on the ski slopes, with many functional buildings, so you really do have ski-in/ski-out access to almost all accommodations. And speaking of accommodations, you can try everything from self-catering apartments to four- and five-star hotels. There’s something for everyone, and the food offers a wide variety as well. And now we’re off to a special ski run that might even play a role in the Olympics. Come along! Yes, and here we are on the snowfront of Maribel Monterey. As you can see, all these accommodations have direct access to the ski passes , giving you the opportunity to do more than just ski right here in the resort. Last night we also saw some people sledding, night sledding, which was lovely. Winter hikes, all sorts of things here in this huge resort. We’re just passing by here now, and then we’re off to the special ski run. Right now we’re skiing among the clipped trees. You can see the high alpine terrain of Mont Vaulan at the very end; we’ll be skiing on that later. And the trees here are really impressive. It’s also beautiful: high alpine, down below the tree line, and skiing through the villages. It’s amazing how many lifts go out here. There’s a gondola going up there, a chairlift going down here, another gondola over there, and there’s another one going up right over there too. It’s pretty big, isn’t it, Linus? Huge here. You’re amazed too. Your first time, right? Definitely. My first time here in France. It’s just so incredibly big, simply. On the map, it all looks so small. And when you’re actually here, it’s just so vast. And up we go. We’ve arrived at the Roc du Fé, and take a look at these picnic areas. It’s very popular here in France to picnic right next to the slopes. There are various tables and options, and the heart-shaped ones up here are especially inviting. This mountain already played an important role in the 1992 Olympic Games , all the way down to the valley at Maribel Centre, where the competitions were held. And perhaps it will play a role again in 2030, because the Olympics might return. The bid has been submitted. We’ll see, but first we’re off to the runs here, and then it’s time for our lunch break. That’ll be delicious. We’ll take you with us. Wow, what a panorama! We’re looking out here towards L’Aminier, towards Val Thoreau, right at the end of the valley. And you can see that there are various points where you can cross from Maribel to the other valley. And everything here is skiable, even on the other side. Incredible. It really makes you realize what it means to go against the grain. Over there it was quite busy, lots of bumps on the slopes, and here you can really let loose. That was really cool. Wow. Today it’s really been a constant interplay of sun, clouds, sun, clouds. And right now we’re back in the middle of nowhere. In the middle of nowhere. And here we arrive at a special point, not only the change towards Courgevel, where the sun is shining again over there, by the way, but also the start of the Grand Koloa, one of the toughest marked ski runs in the Alps. It goes over a ridge into the Koloa. We dared to do that yesterday. You can see a few shots of it superimposed, and there will also be a full YouTube video about it. If it’s already available, it’s linked above. Otherwise, it will be on YouTube soon. This is intuitive skiing. There are also some bumps on the piste, which means keeping loose. Keep your legs nice and relaxed so you can absorb the bumps. Find your balance at the top and head down towards Merybeth. We just saw something on the webcams. Now we can only hope—that was ten minutes ago—but it’s very, very likely that we’ll encounter that sea of ​​fog right at the summit of Mont Valence . I’m excited. It’s almost time. And as you can see, you see nothing. Monts Valence, highest point of Méribelle, 2nd. 952 meters. We still had a tiny bit of hope that the lift would take us above the sea of ​​clouds, but it didn’t work out. Second, how important it is to ski against the grain, because some slopes were really crowded early in the morning. But we kept moving around a bit, and then you actually get a clear run.
