Croatia’s Hidden East: Life & REAL Food of Slavonia!
in the country of the Thousand Islands, Croatia. We are in a very undiscovered region because Croatia, which uh you might know is a quite small country. It has less than 4 million inhabitants and um has a huge region which is just beautiful ashure blue coast where everybody goes in their vacation. But uh I took another trip. I’m in the north part of Croatia, Slovenia, Barangia, close to the Hungarian border because here you can find something totally different. You can find mountains, you can find plains, you can find beautiful monasteries. So, the next 3 days I will be uh exploring this region which not many people know. And uh yeah, come along for an amazing journey in the most undiscovered region of Croatia. [Music] We stopped in a little town called Shivo Chevitzi which translates to Shivo is a plum and chevitzi is a lover. So plum lover boy or something like that. It’s a very small town here in Bara Croatian Barna where um they have some business here. Not much. They are it looks very much like a Hungarian village. the same kind of buildings, not so rich as you could imagine. Remember, Croatia is more aligned with the European values of the EU than uh Hungary is. But yeah, I like these old facets here. What is happening in Shivitzi? Let’s find out. Actually, if you didn’t know, I’m also filming uh videos for Tik Tok and Instagram, and uh that is going very wild. There’s around um I don’t know five million people watching every month. So uh you should follow me on all the socials if you have time. Look guys, I found a place that serves real oyetsk beer from Ozek. It doesn’t look open now, but maybe it will be open. [Music] We are in Gat which is a town very close to the Hungarian border. Actually here we have a a little river called Karashita and um it joins the Draa River. If you look on the map geographically the Draa is the river that is uh making the natural border of Hungary and Croatia. [Music] And if you fancy, you can take on a little drive a bike tour. You can go from places such as Belli Monaster Doni, Miholy. Oo, we have Podraka, Moslavina. These names and all the things that has to be seen here. It’s crazy. Jako, you even have Semleti. Beautiful places. and of course Uzi where we’re going very soon. Uh behind me we have the Dava River, beautiful Dava. And here’s the Dava bike tour. So, you know, it would be nice to to go for a few days, follow the Dava River, stay at different uh hotels on the way or just camp in the wild even. Look here. Old Viet from Tito’s time. Closed. There’s an old well here. [Music] over. How’s this [Music] movie? [Music] Beautiful fall colors of Croatia. Here’s the Sveta Anna uh monastery where people come to pray. And uh it’s located just by the Dava River. And you might imagine who else is praying here. So, uh, Hungary and Croatia and the Balkans have had an epidemic of these stinky box puloska and they are everywhere in my house in PE. They are everywhere. And even here at Swatiana there are in Ozak and Ozak is quite a big city. They have a new business complexes here. They have nice sweets with some small restaurants and then they have tur or something like that which is the old uh city and uh Stigrat I could call it which is how the the city of Ozak looked like hundreds of years ago when uh it was under under Hungarian rule. And uh yeah, let’s check it out. I’ve never been here. So, it’s first time [Music] So what you see here is the Draa River, the same river you can find at the border of Hungary. And it uh actually ends out in uh the Danube somewhere in Serbia as far as I know. And imagine this is the castle, the old castle, the walls that once held this little city together. Now it’s left to the nature. And you can also see some very nice graffiti artists everywhere doing their job. But uh yeah, so beautiful here. [Music] And now all of a sudden we inside the old city. And uh yeah, I mean going walking around here, it’s like you have the old style from the Hungarians, but then they invested a lot of money in making it very modern and nice. It’s definitely worth a little visit. Here on the main square of we have concerts. Often there are big open air concerts here and lots of young people, old people too, but lots of young people come here to listen to their favorite bands. I guess the likes of Plava Orchestra and Guell Dukma had played here. I could imagine, I don’t know, but I know that Bello Duke is coming here in a few weeks. Great band. So if you’re watching this and you don’t know Bella Dukma, look them up. They are quite good. [Music] The architecture here in the old city of Ozek, it’s so beautiful, man. Wow. I’m stunned by the by by the architecture here. It’s it’s Barack Ostro Hungarian a mix of everything here and quite wellkept. So that was the old town of uh Osak. Now we will explore a little bit more. I heard the food here is incredible and I have to try the food here in Osak. If you would like to see a more in-depth documentary like I did with other cities like Sigv and Kumlo, please subscribe to the channel, leave a like and uh also tell me which places you would like to see next. [Applause] Top of the morning. Now we are back here in Don Mihoyats meeting with the tourism uh board and uh you know this city has quite a lot of things to offer. Quite a lot actually. And now we’re looking at the castles here of Donat. Not a lot of people know it has castles, but it has beautiful castles. And here’s the first one. [Music] So here is the story. So uh this castle was uh built in the start of the 20th century by uh two families marrying. Uh we have the milot family who built this castle and then the other little I don’t know if it’s a castle but the other little building here uh built by the praal they married and then built this in only 3 years from 1903 to 1906. You know back then it took time to build. And fun fact, the uh emperor of the Austrohungarian Empire, Fran Joseph, he stayed here. They had some military exercise here in Don Mihoyats and they stayed here and um yeah, it’s very beautiful. [Music] So, it’s now a office building. Imagine [Music] if people lived here today. That would be amazing. I mean, in Hungary, some of the politician built castles like this and they live in it. But yeah. Wow. It’s so beautiful. And the amount of small details in this you see in in the the drainage system. You have dragons. You have small figures. This is peak architecture from the end of the Austrian Hungarian Empire. So beautiful. The history is very interesting. You were sold to a Jewish family at some point and in 1941 they have to they had to flee and give it up. But uh lots of owners in a little over 100 years. Wonderful castles, wonderful days here in Don Miguyats. It’s been an amazing three days here. I love it so far and um I can’t wait to discover more of this beautiful country of Croatia, Horvatka. So yeah, let’s see what’s inside the castle. [Music] There’s an old typewriter here where you can read something about Tito’s power. No. Yes. Yes. Yes. It’s from Tito time. Yes. Yes. From Yugoslav. Wow. From Tito’s time. Yes. Yes. The partisans. And here you would find the zombies. If you’re a big fan of books from the Yugo times, you come here and you can see whatever you like. Why are they just like here? Why don’t they do something about it? [Music] So you see in the time 1903 they had one of the most modern inventions here. People wouldn’t believe that in Don Mihoyats you had something from the future because in all these beautiful buildings you had a coffee machine that could serve you coffee if you put in some uh I don’t think they had euro back then but uh kuna or fint or whatever they had. So they had coffee machines back in 1903. Just remember this. [Music] So this is the dance hall of the castle. Very beautiful. Very, you know, you really feel the people here had some kind of idea with the whole thing. very modern of its age and uh English style, tudtor style. Very very fascinating actually. And every little cimeter here, there’s details. So, so unique. Wow. So, here we have the old chapel. Now, it’s a wedding hall. And uh you can see the architecture, new Gothic style. Very beautiful. You can see all the details everywhere I go. If it’s here, the amount of details. Milad had a vision. So, this was the castle. We will now go see more of this beautiful town of Don Mihoyat. Such a huge park here. Here’s the monument of France Yosef, the Austrohungarian emperor built in 1905. He was here and actually stayed at the castle in 1901 before the milat castle was built and he did some military exercises here and they built a monument after him. I love it. [Music] A classic 70s socialist monument here in the middle of Don Mihoyat. Freedom. [Music] Here we have the church of Don Mihoyat built in 1,057. So, you know, it’s almost 1,000 years old. It’s hard to imagine, but again, this part of the world had a lot of things a thousand years ago. If you go to Scandinavia, we didn’t have much buildings that’s still standing today. 1,000 years. We have to check it out. Huh? [Music] Glory. [Music] Welcome to the amazing Peppa Apartments here in Don Mihyats. This is today’s sponsor of the video. We’re staying in this wonderful apartment here in city center Don Mhuly, Croatia. Let me show you around. So, you come in here, you have this wonderful, wonderful I don’t know how to turn it on. This wonderful little lounge area where you can relax, have a great little time here. Talk to a therapist if you need it. I don’t think you will need a therapist after this amazing hotel apartment. And here we have a little dining area. Looks straight out of something from uh an American movie. You can sit here, discuss your plants. They also provided us with some fresh apples from their own garden right here down here. Very nice. If you don’t feel like that is enough, you can even go out here, see the beautiful Diat. If that wasn’t enough, we also have this amazing kitchen. You know, I don’t really know who needs such a big kitchen, but in case you want to throw a big party and cook for all your friends, you have it here. the newest, the most modern kitchen you can find. And they they really rock this uh dark colors. We have the dark wood here, dark sink. They provided us with a lot of stuff, water, even some wine from Bang. This region here in Croatia and amazing. And if you want to relax, oh, you have this nice area here. I can do magic. Look, of course, you want to see where the magic happens, and it’s here. This nice double bed. I slept in it this night. It is like a H’s bed. One of the most expensive. It’s not really, but it’s really, really good. And uh yeah, you can spend hours here making content for the internet, if you know what I mean. Now, we’re going to grill. Amazing. Very welcome. We have some meats here. Fresh meats. It’s going to be great. Look at this beautiful place. Looks like a Roman Roman place in the Roman times. Very beautiful. Can sit here, enjoy a nice beverage, some cur meat, some cheese here from Slavonia. It’s great here. It is. It’s just what you imagine Croatia to be like. Not the coast, but the countryside up here up north. Roman, Roman inspired place. Very nice. And also this is Peppa Apartments. They have a garden for this. Great. They have some local meat like everything here. The cheese, the cured ham, the salami here. Everything is from Savon region. So, it’s almost farm to table. And uh yeah, let’s try some some nice sal. It’s much different than you get in the shops. This is so much more taste. Wow. [Music] Here we have something called marsha which is uh actually just bread, good quality bread, some uh pig fat and paprika on it. Very simple but very good because it’s made the right way with quality ingredients. The old farmers would eat this together with raia and some bacon. Simple but brilliant. So now we’re preparing the ribia chba fish soup. And it will take some time but uh we have wine raia lots of meat. So uh we can sit for a few hours. So apparently they arranged a band to come today. I don’t know what to say. This is the crazy life I guess. Who’s makes the best the best fish soup? [Music] So now this band came playing Croatian music. I don’t know what to say. It sounds so good. I wish I could join their band. But what an evening we’re having here in Croatia. I love the Balcon. I love the Balkans. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] First [Music] What a night. That was crazy. I don’t remember having this tough hangover in years, but it was such a great fun yesterday. the musicians who came, everything. It was really, really bulk. Now, we will head out to have some food, some last food here in Donat before we go back to Hungary. It’s been some amazing days, and I’m happy you watched the video so far. So, uh, yeah, let’s see. I could eat a huge plaska or some chilivapi. It would really help my hang out.

Frederik, it’s great to see you again! I really enjoyed this video. I found you initially on YouTube when you were performing, I think in Subotica? I’ve since been to Serbia and Montenegro and really loved everywhere! Great people too. I’ll be back for sure, maybe permanently! I know Hungary well and love it there too. Are you still performing? Take care bro!
Frederic,
Next time go to visit Nova Gradiska, Cernik, Strmac famous cotages , Psunj,
Like to see that video,
That is my birth parth of Croatia,
Greetings from Canada
At what minute do the locals begin to howl "Za dom spremni!"?
Tack för videon Fredrik, jag är från Vukovarsko-srijemska županija, du bör besöka Vukovar

Croatia has focused on coastal tourism. The mountainous part is phenomenal, and Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja are not interesting for Croatia for tourism. An outdated view of tourism, our "experts" still think that the point of tourism is summer, sea and sun. Pannonian Croatia is phenomenal. A great city to visit in Slavonia is Slavonski Brod, and it is always "on the sidelines", but that city has been an important city throughout its history, it has history, it has events. I recommend it for a visit.
the year on Church is 1802. It's not 1000 years old. Maybe on that location was a church building 1000 ago, but it's not actually the same building. It's tradition in northern Croatia to drink gemisht. Gemisht is when you put a little bit more than a half glass of white vino and then the rest is sparkling water. Excellent with meal !
That meat and cheese spread! I'm afraid of eating the bread over there because I'll probably never be able to eat American bread again (it's full of sugar for one thing).
hmm, ? interesting…I have my ''Maturalna radnja''…1903 u Hrvatskoj….Karoly Khuen Hedervary (magyartization!)…''Ban'' Hrvatski visite Zagreb….I'll stop here….
…nice, speaking tons of different language is fantastic skills!….but history is 100% more important (not partial ! one sided!) ….this is just reminder, if not, you gonna go the way ''eu'' always did, wars!….perpetual wars!….
SLAVONIJA should promote her region and the other regions shld …
they, then are not doing enough ….
YouTube is open to the world… why don't they advertise… the Adriatic Sea Coast is reachable in a day .
Šljivoševci is not in Baranya!
Thank you, this is nice! Also please visit Podravina, the home of naive painters. I Croatia, also hilly Zagorje is magical with old castles and the baroque town of Varazdin and Cakovec.
1903 coffee machine ?…instant sub 💪
Nice video man! I am from Baranja ,the village of Šljivoševci is not in Baranja, but in Slavonia, but the county is called Osječko-Baranjska Županija , Županija means County, so that's why you said it was Baranja!
Šljivoševci is like 15 km away from my town I pass through it every now and then when I go to hungary to get soda
