Welcome to sunny Spain, Frigiliana! Today we’re going on a walk through an extraordinary white village — one of the most beautiful in Spain! Frigiliana is located in southern Spain, in the province of Málaga, Andalusia. It has a population of around 3,000 residents. Frigiliana’s history spans thousands of years and reflects the many cultures that have shaped the Iberian Peninsula. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area around Frigiliana was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. Later, it became part of the Roman Empire, and remnants of Roman settlements have been found nearby, including coins, pottery, and traces of roads. Frigiliana reached its peak during the Moorish era (8th–15th centuries), when the Muslim rulers of Al-Andalus built terraced fields, irrigation systems, and the foundations of the village we see today. The narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses are a legacy of this time. In 1487, Frigiliana fell to the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella during the Reconquista. Muslim population was forced to convert to Christianity and became known as Moriscos (converted Moors). Do you like this place? Share your impressions in the comments! However, tensions between the new Christian authorities and the Moriscos remained high. In 1569, Frigiliana was the site of the last major Morisco rebellion in Andalusia. The uprising was brutally suppressed, and many Moriscos were killed or expelled. This event is commemorated every August during the Festival of the Three Cultures, celebrating the coexistence of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish traditions. After the rebellion, Frigiliana was repopulated by settlers from other parts of Spain. Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of sugarcane, became the main economic activity. In 1725, the Ingenio Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a sugarcane mill and rum distillery, was built — it still operates today, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. In the 20th century, Frigiliana remained a quiet agricultural village until the rise of tourism in the 1960s and 70s. Would you like to visit this place?
