Hello fellow travelers, it’s great to have you back! Join us in this video as we travel to Herten, specifically the Alt Westerholt district and the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. We’re visiting our friends Kerstin and Jörg in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Herten, and they’ve booked a guided tour for us today through the historic Alt Westerholt district. These interesting tours of the historic town center take place regularly, offering visitors the chance to learn more about the history, architecture, and life in centuries past. The old chapel was first documented in 1310 and served as the parish church for the community from the 15th century onwards. Alt Westerholt is one of the most impressive historic town centers in the region and a medieval gem in the Ruhr area. With its winding lanes and lovingly restored half-timbered houses, the town offers a unique testament to Westphalian history and architecture. Old Westerholt is known for its approximately 60 listed half-timbered houses, most of which date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The buildings have been lovingly restored and bear witness to the craftsmanship of bygone eras. Particularly striking are the artfully carved beams, historical inscriptions, and the harmonious arrangement of the houses along the cobblestone streets. Westerholt’s origins date back to the 9th century, and the village was first documented in 799 as belonging to Werden Abbey. At the heart of its historical development is Westerholt Castle, which was built as a moated castle in the 12th century and later converted into a prestigious manor house in the Neoclassical style. It remains in the possession of the von Westerholt family to this day and significantly shapes the village’s character. The manor house now houses the Schlosshotel Westerholt, which offers guests a stylish ambiance with historical flair. The tour concludes back at the starting point at the parish church of St. Martinus, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. We’re now cycling along excellently maintained bike paths that now run along the disused railway lines of the old colliery railways throughout the Ruhr region. Our destination is the Hoheward spoil tip, affectionately nicknamed “Monte Schlacko” by Jörg. In the 1980s, protests erupted in Herten, partly against the heavy truck traffic that rumbled through residential areas daily to transport the spoil to the tip. Today, it’s an impressive symbol of the region’s structural transformation – from an industrial center to a green recreational and cultural landscape. At around 152 meters high, it’s one of the tallest artificial hills in the Ruhr region and covers an area of ​​approximately 160 hectares. We reach the first impressive headframe of the Ewald colliery, which rises into the sky like a monument to bygone times. The Ewald colliery now stands for transformation and a focus on the future. We also visit the Hoheward Visitor Center on the grounds of the former Ewald colliery. Of particular interest here is the so-called “mining cabin”—a changing room reminiscent of the miners’ working world. Our path leads us through the castle park, past Herten Water Castle, directly to a delicious dinner at the “Altes Dorf” inn. Today we’re off to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. The park is a prime example of the creative repurposing of industrial brownfield sites. On the grounds of the former Meiderich steelworks, which operated from 1901 to 1985, a unique park was created starting in the 1990s, fascinatingly combining industrial heritage, nature, and leisure. After the plant’s closure, the decision was made against demolishing the facilities. Instead, the area was transformed into a public space that doesn’t conceal its industrial past but rather showcases it. What was once a place of fire, smoke, and steel is now a green sanctuary, and nature has impressively reclaimed the site. Mosses and birch trees grow on blast furnaces, birds nest in old pipes, and ponds fill former settling basins. This “industrial nature” is not a product of chance, but part of an ecological concept that makes the transformation visible and tangible. The accessible blast furnace 5 is the centerpiece of the park. Everything is very impressive, and one wonders what all those pipes were for. 252 steps lead to the viewing platform at a height of 70 meters. From up here, you have a spectacular view over the western Ruhr region – on a clear day, you can see as far as the Oberhausen Gasometer or the Rhine.
