They Call It the Capital of Christmas🎄Strasbourg, France 4K Walk

Welcome to Christmas Strasbourg, France! Today we’ll take a walk through the oldest Christmas market in Europe! Let’s enjoy the magical atmosphere, feel the Christmas spirit, and see how the city is beautifully decorated for the holidays! The Capital of Christmas (Capitale de NoĂ«l) – Strasbourg proudly carries this title. It’s home to the oldest Christmas market in Europe, first held in 1570. Christkindelsmärik – that’s the Alsatian (and German) name for the city’s main Christmas market, located at the foot of the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral. And of course, we’re heading there, so you’ll get to see this place with your own eyes! Strasbourg lies in northeastern France, in the region of Alsace, right on the border with Germany. The River Ill runs through the city, and just a few kilometers away flows the Rhine River – the natural border between the two countries. Thanks to this unique location, Strasbourg blends both French and German cultures, languages, and traditions. Strasbourg is where the entire Christmas market tradition was born. The first market here dates back to 1570, when it was known as the “Christkindelsmärik” – meaning “Market of the Christ Child” in Alsatian, a local dialect between German and French. At that time, Strasbourg belonged to the Holy Roman Empire, and the market replaced an older Catholic fair called Saint Nicholas Market, aligning the celebration more closely with Protestant Christmas traditions. And here we are at the Christkindelsmärik – Strasbourg’s legendary Christmas market! This innovation spread across Europe – to Germany, Austria, and later to the rest of the world, making Strasbourg the birthplace of the modern Christmas market. Strasbourg itself has a fascinating history. The city’s story begins over 2,000 years ago, when the Romans founded a military outpost called Argentoratum around 12 BC. It stood along the Rhine River, guarding one of the most strategic trade and military routes between northern and southern Europe. Over time, the fortress expanded into a prosperous medieval town known for trade, craftsmanship, and learning. Its strategic location made it wealthy – but also a target for ambitious empires. During the Middle Ages, Strasbourg became a Free Imperial City within the Holy Roman Empire – meaning it governed itself independently. This freedom helped the city develop a strong identity. By the 13th century, Strasbourg was already a major center of commerce, printing, and education. In 1439, the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral was completed. At the time, it was the tallest building in the world, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and still one of Europe’s greatest landmarks. In the 16th century, Strasbourg became one of the first major cities to embrace the Protestant Reformation. It became a refuge for scholars, thinkers, and reformers, including Martin Bucer, an important colleague of Martin Luther. The city’s world-famous printing presses spread new religious and philosophical ideas across Europe. In 1681, King Louis XIV annexed Strasbourg into France. For nearly 200 years, the city flourished under French rule until the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, when Germany captured it and made it part of the German Empire. After World War I, Strasbourg returned to France in 1918. During World War II, the city was annexed by Nazi Germany. Many residents were forced to fight for the German army, and the use of French in public was banned. In 1944, Strasbourg was liberated by French forces and became French again permanently.
