In the 9th century, the first hermit monks arrived in Meteora seeking solitude and protection in the caves and crevices of the mountains during the 14th century. At the height of the Ottoman occupation, the monks began to build monasteries on the summits of the rocks to isolate and protect themselves. [Applause]
