Merry Christmas and welcome to Stuttgart, the 6th largest city in Germany and one of the best places for Christmas markets! We begin our walk in Schlossplatz, the city’s largest square. The building behind the tree is the Königsbau, home to the local stock exchange from 1991 to 2002. Stuttgart’s Christmas markets have been held for over 300 years. This is Königstraße (King Street), the main pedestrian shopping street in the heart of Stuttgart and one of the longest and busiest pedestrian zones in Germany. It is known for its wide pedestrian boulevard, shops, cafés, restaurants, street performers, and major cultural buildings. The Christmas market spreads through the historic core of Stuttgart, filling Schlossplatz, Schillerplatz, Marktplatz. Prior to 1692, similar winter markets existed where residents bought goods for the Christmas season, but the 17th-century references mark the beginning of the modern tradition. In the 18th century, the market grew into an important seasonal event, known for local craftsmen selling toys, wooden goods, candles, and baked treats. By the 1800s, the market was an established feature of Advent in the Kingdom of Württemberg. Much of the modern layout around Schillerplatz dates to this period, with the Old Palace (Altes Schloss) providing a dramatic backdrop. Schlossplatz takes its name from the Neues Schloss (New Palace), the Baroque royal residence of the Dukes and later Kings of Württemberg. Construction of the New Palace began in 1746, giving the square its shape and purpose as the forecourt of the royal residence. In 1977, the square was redesigned for pedestrian use, with large green spaces and fountains.
