Visit the Pont D’Avignon in France, a bridge made famous by the song every school kid knows

When you visit the French city of Avignon
you must come to the Pont d’Avignon, the famous bridge that every student of the French
language has heard about in the famous song. Now there are many legends and
historical events surrounding the bridge. It was either built by a saint
or a local businessman and over the years the popes were in residence here in Avignon,
there was a lot of political intrigue, there was even climate change in the 15th century.
The bridge fell apart and it fell into disuse. Today it’s a tourist attraction and the reason
why I came here and to sing the song and do the dance. So, here we go.
(music) So that’s it from Avignon. For more fun

Visiting the Pont d’Avignon to sing the song every school kid learns in French class. See how the ruined bridge looks today as a popular tourist attraction.
Lyrics in French:
Sur le Pont d’Avignon
L’on y danse, l’on y danse
Sur le Pont d’Avignon
L’on y danse tous en rond.

Lyrics in English:
On the bridge of Avignon
We’re all dancing, we’re all dancing
On the bridge of Avignon
We all dance in circles.

The song was composed for a 19th century opera and became a popular nursery rhyme. Historically, people did not dance on the bridge but gathered underneath it to gamble and drink.

Instrumental music by Singing Bell, in public domain for educational purposes.
