[Music] Carcassan looks like a castle straight out of a story book, but this real life fortress has been standing for over a thousand years. [Music] It sits in the south of France, right between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, making it a key location for trade and defense. [Music] Long ago, the Romans built walls on this hilltop. And later, the Visigoths turned it into a stronghold. [Music] In the Middle Ages, Carcassen became a powerful fortress with stone towers and thick walls protecting the city inside. [Music] During the Albagenzian crusades, the people here fought bravely. But in 1209, the fortress was taken over and the citizens had to leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs. [Music] Over time, Carcasson lost its military importance and parts of it started falling apart. [Music] Luckily, in the 19th century, an architect named Euene Vleuk stepped in and restored the fortress to its former glory. [Music] It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting visitors from all over the world who want to walk through its medieval streets.
