Why you should NOT cancel your Cyprus holiday because of Israel & Iran

Hi YouTube, Brian James on my path to PAOS. Uh my name is Brian. I’m a um a dual nationality Irish kumbit who in April 2025 decided to permanently re relocate to the beautiful island of Pathos in the wonderful Mediterranean Sea. But today’s video is a slightly unusual one. Um I did a video, my last video, which is a link above, was about why I’m leaving the UK. And there’s a few things on that. But I’ve had a lot of people asking me in comments and emails and things about how safe it is out here, especially with what’s happening between uh Israel and Iran. Now, there’s been a huge up uptake in tensions there. And when you consider that the island itself is only it’s less than 200 miles away from uh from Israel, from uh Lebanon, um from Gaza, you know, they’re all about 200 miles away from here, the the nearest point, certainly a lot less in some cases. Lebanon’s just over 100 miles. And there’s an awful lot of bad things going on in the world. Now, on this video, I am not preaching for one side or another. I’m not saying who’s right or wrong. That’s not what this video is about. This video is about how safe I feel living on the island of Cyprus. Now, as I say at the beginning, I came over in the beginning of April 2025 and the conflict between um between Israel and Palestine in Gaza has been going for a year or two now. Uh there’s been tensions in the Middle East for a long time. Um and they were there when I decided to come here. Now, I’m a person who’s quite methodical. I get I’ve been told that I’m a paranoid optimist. I look at as if the whole world’s against me achieving my goals, but I’m still optimistic enough to go off and do and achieve what I want to do. And I use that same thought pattern on this. Before I came to Cyprus, I looked at all the permutations. I looked at all the possibilities. It’s still a divided island. There are still situations here which go back for decades, if not, you know, multiple generations. We live on the strategic meeting point of three different continents Europe, Asia and Africa. And of course from that thing you know it’s the only EU country which is in Asia. There is all sorts of things going on. There’s a lot of Brits here with still having some sovereign base areas which are British held territory still from a military point of view where the British military, Americans and other NATO forces share the resources there. And also there’s an awful lot of Eastern block countries. Um for instance, my my next door neighbor here is, you know, my my neighbors here are predominantly Russian. I’ve got some British here, but I’ve got a lot of Russian people here as well. And there’s an awful lot of former um eastern block um people who live on the island, who work on the island, who thrive on the island. Now, because it’s so strategically important, none of the sides, in my this is purely my opinion as a former military man as well, none of the sides are wanting to give up the strategic center point because it is so important and they will defend it, but a lot of the pressure is coming from outside. Now, there are a lot of people, as I say, who are cancelling holidays, saying they’re not going to come over here. It can’t be safe. Well, I’ll tell you something. In my opinion, and this is all just my opinion, but in my opinion, I feel a lot safer here than I do walking down the street in London, for instance, or Newcastle or Birmingham. I feel incredibly safe here. Yes, this is going on the doorstep. And yes, it is alleged that you can actually see some of the missiles at night for if you go further east on the island toappa or Lukak maybe on when there’s attacks on Tel Aviv, you can actually see some of those missiles flying. I haven’t seen them. I’m just taking what people have said. Excuse me. And that may be the case. But what you got to remember is that we have got a nice body of water dividing us. you know, we have, yes, there’s there’s war going on over there. There’s some hor horrendous things happening over there. Um, but at the moment, it’s not spreading here. There’s a lot of threats and a lot of people are very worried. But to be honest, if we were to look at the chance of nuclear war, yes, it could happen. It depends how advanced Iran is with their nuclear armaments. It depends who else comes into the fray. But at the moment, I am much happier staying here than I am going back to the UK. by a considerable margin. So if you are thinking about coming out to the wonderful island of Cyprus and you got any doubts, please put them behind you. I’d be more concerned about the airlines choosing their roots properly than I would about being here on the island. Personally, I have absolutely no concerns. I have no desire to return to the UK. I have no desire to cut my time here short or even find another country which would um which would be safer. Uh because I can’t really think of one. The crime level here is incredibly low. Yes, I got pulled up by somebody a little while ago. I said, “Ah, but this happened on Cypress and that’s happened on Cyprus.” Yes, things do happen. you know, we’re we’re not totally devoid of any crime, including serious crime, but the they the the figures per capita on this island are so incredibly low to be almost, and I mean almost negligible. You know, to me, I moved across here in April. I knew what was going on in the world around me. I’m very savvy when it comes to the political and the military situation around the world. I did 45 years wearing an RAF uniform and I’ve got a quite a reasonable understanding about how the military works and how politics works and how um the interaction between countries on a war footing works. But my advice to you is do your own homework. Read up. Don’t just see what the mainstream media says. Do your own homework and then decide to come out. But from my point of view, if any of my friends, if any of my family were to turn around and say, “It’s dangerous out there. I’m not sure about coming. What do you think?” I would tell them in a heartbeat, “Come out here. Enjoy your holiday. Enjoy your time out here. Stop worrying about what’s going on because at the moment it is not affecting us here. It’s not bothering us. Yes, there could be military intervention launched from Cyprus. We all know about that situation. It’s happened multiple times in the past. But I also don’t believe that um that’s necessarily an issue in this particular conflict at the moment. So let me know if you in the comments below if you are planning on coming out to Cyprus. If you let me know also if you decided not to come out and why that is. But as this final thing, as I say, my my personal from the heart uh thing is get yourself on your plane, get out to Cyprus, have an absolutely wonderful time in any part of Cypress that you come to because it is the most beautiful, stunning, and peaceful of islands. And I’m sure that you’re going to have a wonderful time. And don’t let any of the news put you off. You’ll have a great time and a very safe time. Bye-bye.

  1. Great content been a long time since I was there I wonder if you could give some advice on obtaining a motorcycle licence there I no it’s not what you usually chat about but any info would be good thanks in advance and keep your channel going

  2. Cyprus is a member of the EU! It is very safe. I'd rather live here in the glorious sunshine, than live in miserable England. The government in England, is turning its back on the British people, making them feel unsafe

  3. Fair enough I stand corrected and am not to proud to admit that. But Brian’s aim in making this post was to reassure people, my point is that in making these comments , imo he sadly has not done that. Just look at the number of views for this post versus the others

  4. Similar situation to life there in 90/91 following the invasion of Kuwait – and not knowing the Iraqi capabilities at that time. Scuds and Exocets a-gogo!

Have a Keo. It'll be right!

  5. all my family are telling me to move back to Australia because of the war.. I just had a baby and we plan on building here (my husband is cypriot) . I'm a bit hesitant to build our house now because of what everyone is saying .. yet I feel safe here and don't want to let the noise of the world affect us having a great home and life in Cyprus
